THE LOCKOUT IS LOOMING & A FAMILIAR FACE COULD TAKE CENTER STAGE IN NEGOTIATIONS!

Forget about the pit you feel in your stomach right now with Anthony Volpe back in the big leagues. It's about to get really real. The thrill of the regular season is still heating up, but the real drama is going to unfold off the field this winter. Buckle up, this is the start of a very long lockout with a twist that could come out of left field.

The season is still young, but we are already talking about the end of the season. The Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) expires December 1st and Major League Baseball and MLB Players Association (MLBPA) met face-to-face Tuesday to give opening presentations for negotiations, read more HERE.

The league will pursue both a salary cap AND a salary floor, something that players have firmly opposed, including Bryce Harper openly criticizing it most recently when he cursed out MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, check it out HERE.

Even though talks have started, progress on the proposals probably won't be significant until after the season ends. If an agreement can't be reached by March, schedule adjustments for 2027 will need to be made. In a lockout, no transactions can be made so that means no trades or free agent signings. I still remember the last lockout which was 99-days right on the heels of a pandemic. That irritated me beyond belief when Sonny Gray was whining like a baby about money while the rest of us were dealing with our own lockdowns and hardships. That was bad, this could be even worse. 

The anticipated lockout is only in talks, but it already has the attention of Congress. It is rumored that a lockout would cause an intervention from politicians and President Trump would be possible. The last thing I want is congress or the president meddling with America's favorite pastime, but it's possible that politics and baseball could collide in a new way.

In case you hadn't heard, one of my favorites Mark Teixeira is running for the U.S. House of Representatives in Texas' 21st Congressional District in 2026. By the way Mike O'Hara....if you are out there buddy, LOOK Tex is relevant again unlike Greg Bird! Sorry, I couldn't resist the throwback to old times when we traded zingers. Anyway, Tex is a former member of the MLBPA's executive subcommittee so if he wins his race, he could play a pivotal role in negotiating a new deal. Interesting thought to see him go from one of the MLBPA members, to someone who could potentially bring both sides together in a different capacity.  

I've had several people tell me not to worry about this now because "It's too early" but this is going to be a negotiation unlike any other. Baseball as we know it could look VERY different here soon. Things are gonna get ugly....and this is just a warmup for what's to come.

WOAH! THERE'S A MICHAEL KING BIDDING WAR HAPPENING RIGHT NOW.

It's almost Christmas and one team is about to get an early present. Michael King is ready to return to the AL East, now we just wait and see who he pitches for.

According to SI.com HERE, the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox and the Yankees are all finalists in the Michael King sweepstakes. I really don't know how I feel about the idea of King coming back. I guess I am indifferent compared to Casey who wrote I REALLY HOPE A MICHAEL KING REUNION IS NOT IN THE CARDS. I have nothing against King, I guess I just am not itching for a reunion. I am looking for new shiny options.

On the other hand though....the Yankees NEED options. Both Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon are going to miss time at the beginning of the season and let's face it you can never have enough pitching. This is true for ANY team but especially the Yankees who seem to have the most untimely injuries partnered with a very ineffective training and medical staff that exasperate everything.

King is very familiar with the Yankees so there's one plus to consider in all of this. We know some guys just can't handle the bright lights and expectations here and that is not a concern here. Also, it would take some of the pressure off Luis Gil and Cam Schlittler who could slide down in the rotation. It would also allow the Yankees to use Will Warren in more of a swingman role. There's some strategy here that could work.

As far as our other AL East rivals, this could get interesting. The Orioles are on a quest to find strong pitching after upgrading its offense with the Pete Alonso signing. King would instantly be the strongest arm in their rotation and would make the Orioles a stronger team in 2026 then they were this season. Boston on the other hand is a bit of a head scratcher. Right now, their rotation is full especially after adding Sonny Gray.

If the Red Sox do sign King, it could be part of a strategy used to then trade some of their up and coming arms for an impact bat similar to what the Orioles just did. Adding the impact bat also makes the Red Sox a stronger team which could make the battle for the AL East that much tougher. Last year it was a race between the Blue Jays and us but now this could become even more difficult on the Yankees. 

So now we wait and see what happens. Does King reunite with the Yankees or do the Red Sox have a shot at snagging the guy that grew up in Rhode Island and went to Boston college? It's not something I was interested in. Now that I see how it can change the landscape in the AL East....I'm paying attention.

SONNY GRAY FOUND HIS BALLS!

Or did he? You can find lots of opinions about it on social media. That's one thing that is never in short supply on social media.....lots and lots of opinions. Sonny Gray had lots to say. Some people took it more offensively than others and then there's me, who laughed hysterically and is still chuckling as I write this.

In case you missed it, the St. Louis Cardinals traded Sonny to the Boston Red Sox. He was introduced to the Boston media yesterday and he already fits right in. He sounds like he was born and raised there. Translation....he hates the Yankees. SHOCKER oh and....I couldn't care less!

He's excited to be directly involved with the biggest rivalry of sports. "It feels good to me to go to a place where it's easy to hate the Yankees," Sonny said HERE. Some fans are enraged because once upon a time he said this:

That was almost 10 years ago. What was he supposed to say when he was asked about it....that he was mad as hell? Let's not forget that Sonny disagrees with the approach coaches took with him. They wanted him to throw fewer fastballs in favor of pitches that had more spin. That is the Yankees analytics game after all. He didn't agree with the Yankees approach and in the end he couldn't handle the bright lights in New York.

So let the guy talk and say he hates us. It's cool....it doesn't change the fact that he couldn't hack it in New York and he better hope he's learned a thing or two (or 5000) from his Yankee tenure because he is gonna need it in Boston. The pressure is on and now that he is adapting to the rivalry he better talk the talk and walk the walk meaning his salty ass better pitch well....or Boston will eat him alive and I will laugh even harder.

He's just trying to revive the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry to a new level. I guess he's just pathetically following in Cam Schlitter's path. Cam did it better though so he should take notes. None of us have forgotten that the kid that grew up in Massachusetts and was a die hard Boston fan with his family. Now he is a big part of our team and loving it. Oh and his family converted naturally. I guess that's what happens when the Yankees draft you and your hometown team doesn't. Their allegiance switched, just like Sonny's.

So I don't care about Sonny and his big mouth hating on the Yankees. Isn't that normal? Everyone hates us. I'm not gonna get bent out of shape over it. I also am not gonna give Sonny credit for talking tough. I'm just gonna laugh and enjoy it. Save the tough guy routine for the mound, buddy. Oh and, be ready for the Boo birds when you return to the Bronx. It's how we say WELCOME HOME!

THE RED SOX ARE ALREADY AHEAD OF THE YANKEES THIS OFF SEASON!

The Red Sox have already gone out and upgraded their rotation. The Yankees? We’re over here lighting candles and hoping Carlos Rodón and Gerrit Cole remember how to throw baseballs in time to help Max Fried. For now, the Yankees’ rotation is basically one ace and two question marks wearing ice packs. And yes—that’s sarcasm.

Why are the Yankees always fashionably late when it comes to addressing their biggest needs? There is zero debate: they need another legit starter behind Fried. There’s no guarantee Cole comes back as Cole, or that Rodón stops pitching like he’s being haunted by 2023. Something has to happen—because the Red Sox already did something.

Boston just pulled off their first real offseason swing, bringing in Sonny Gray from the Cardinals accoding to reports. Now, sure, Yankee fans will roll their eyes and say, “We had Sonny Gray, remember? Dumpster fire.” Fair point—but that was baby Sonny. That was Sonny fresh out of the wrapper, overwhelmed, overcoached, and allergic to throwing what he was actually good at.

This Sonny? He’s older, tougher, smarter, and, frankly, really good. Laugh all you want—Boston filled a need, and they filled it with a guy who knows how to pitch in big moments.

Gray slots in as a rock-solid No. 2 behind Garrett Crochet on a Sox team trying to win right now. They didn’t gut their farm system, they got cash in the deal, and they added a pitcher who posted a 5.29 K/BB ratio last season—fourth-best in MLB—and cleared 180 innings. That’s not “Yankees Sonny Gray.” That’s “You’re-gonna-hate-facing-him Sonny Gray.” Boston made a legitimately smart move.

Meanwhile, the Yankees have Fried… and then a couple of pitchers whose injury updates sound like Yelp reviews. “Getting better… slowly… maybe.” No one knows if Cole or Rodón will be ready for Opening Day.

So right now the rotation looks like:
Fried, Warren, Gil… and a prayer.

Yikes.

A TRADE PROPOSAL THAT BRINGS PITCHING TO THE YANKEES...

Because you know... that's what they need right now.

The Yankees’ rotation is a mess—full stop. There's no sugarcoating it. Carlos Carrasco is there, and while I love the guy's story, he's in the rotation. That's all you need to know.  The starting pitching has been inconsistent, unreliable, and flat-out unwatchable at times. It’s not just the rotation either—the entire staff is struggling to keep this team afloat.

With the trade deadline on the horizon, Brian Cashman has no choice: he must address the rotation. Now.

Forget chasing big-name aces with bloated price tags. The smarter move may be targeting a younger, controllable arm with upside. That’s where Dodgers right-hander Bobby Miller comes in.

Newsweek’s Zach Pressnell floated a hypothetical deal that could bring Miller to the Bronx:
Yankees get: RHP Bobby Miller
Dodgers get: OF Everson Pereira, LHP Brock Selvidge

On paper, it’s a reasonable swing. Miller, once a top prospect in L.A., has shown flashes of brilliance—posting a 2.79 ERA in 9 2/3 innings this year at Triple-A Oklahoma City. He was once ranked as the Dodgers’ No. 2 overall prospect. The talent is there. The question is: can he handle the Bronx?

We’ve seen this story before. Big market pitchers wilt under the Yankee spotlight. Sonny Gray never found his footing. Devin Williams is struggling. Joey Gallo? His career cratered here. L.A. is a big stage, but New York is a different beast. Would Miller survive the scrutiny, the pressure, the chaos?

Still, this kind of move would make sense. I have always believed that the Yankees have been open to moving Everson Pereira (THE YANKEES ARE DOING THAT THING AGAIN...), and this could be the type of calculated risk they need to make—especially when the current rotation plan includes hoping for miracles from Carrasco and duct tape.

Personally? I’m not holding my breath that this exact deal happens. But it should. Or at least something like it. Because this team needs arms—yesterday. Cashman can’t afford to sit idle while the season slips away. The Yankees need pitching help A.S.A.M.F.P., and it’s time to stop playing it safe.

YANKEES ARE LOOKING AT PAST DISAPPOINTMENTS TO FILL GERRIT COLE'S SHOES!

Man, losing Gerrit Cole hurts like hell. Listening to Brian Cashman's bleak outlook for pitching reinforcements makes it hurt even more. It's a reminder that there are few pitchers out there like Cole even on day one of free agency, let alone right now....just over two weeks before the regular season. Finding talent that matches Cole is a tough challenge even in the best of circumstances.

So now what? Cashman doesn't sounds hopeful. The free agent market isn't enticing and why would it be this late in the game? The "best" options will be a trade scenario. Younger higher-ceiling options like Dylan Cease and Michael King could possibly be available but will cost the Yankees some higher end talent. Then there's another option that should be a non-option in my book.

There's "chatter" on social media and sports publications that the Yankees could look at familiar face Sonny Gray, check it out HERE. I'd like to say while they could, it doesn't mean they should. That experiment didn't work well for us the first time and I would prefer not to re-live that again. I don't think a second go-around would end with better results.

Some players just can't handle New York, and I think that was exactly the case here. After leaving, Gray found his stride with stints in Cincinnati, Minnesota and St. Louis. Not to diminish those markets but they just don't have the pressure that comes under the bright lights at Yankee stadium. They also, don't have such a heavy analytic approach that we do, and Gray just couldn't adapt to that. 

Sometimes it just isn't a fit, and that's okay. Not to mention Gray doesn't come as cheap as Cease or King do. His resurgence away from New York did help him earn a 3 year and $75 million contract with St. Louis. That's a lot of money for a guy we watched falter here and the Yankees are already going to face stiff luxury tax penalties, they aren't looking to go deeper....and certainly not for Gray.

Adding Gray would mean he would need to be in the Yankees plans for beyond 2025. The Yankees entered Spring Training with the reality of being "stuck" with Marcus Stroman, in a similar scenario here. Higher payroll commitment for an underachieving pitcher that no one else really wanted - I'd rather not make that mistake again.

At the end of the day, there are no pitchers out there that will fill Cole's shoes. He's not someone you just magically replace. The Yankees will have to get creative to reinforce the rotation, but Gray isn't a creative option he's a disaster waiting to happen. We don't need to be THAT desperate.

PLEASE SAY NO TO BLAKE SNELL!

Yes, the Yankees need to make some bold changes in order to be in the conversation for the post season in 2024. But, no, those bold moves don't begin with Blake Snell. According to The Athletic's Jim Bowden, the Yankees appear poised to pick up the NL front runner for Cy Young. But I say not so fast. Let's not just add before we figure out what we need.

"New York will have competition -- possibly even the rival Boston Red Sox -- but a move makes sense. Snell is in line to win his second Cy Young Award and would form a fearsome duo with Cole. Plus, if New York could land him for the contract Bowden predicted, he would be a steal. The Yankees need to make at least one -- but probably multiple big moves this offseason if they want to get back into World Series contention," reported Sports Illustrated. Please don't rush because the Sox are in the prey too!

I believe the big moves need to start internally, way before they consider Blake Snell. Who are their pitchers anyway? Are the Yankees going to let Michael King into the starting rotation where he belongs? And even if you get a big name pitcher, can they pitch in New York, in the toughest market in baseball? I don't want Blake Snell to be the next Sonny Gray, who by the way can pitch, just not in New York.

According to The Athletic, "The front office will have to get creative to field a competitive team if the payroll will be less than the $277 million payroll from this season. Because of the team’s locked-in commitments, I also don’t see a realistic pathway for the Yankees to field a competitive team if they were to stay under the first luxury tax level. Depth was a major limiting factor for the 2023 Yankees. Slashing payroll by over $40 million in 2024 would only exacerbate that problem."

And if they do go over the payroll, are they keeping people like Clay Holmes and Gleyber Torres who are due for raises? Is anyone concerned about the dugout presence of Aaron Boone, who simply does not seem to have the managerial skills to lead this kind of team that could include veteran Cody Bellinger and young pitchers  like Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto? Are they still planning to use analytics over baseball knowledge to field their signature players? 

So, Blake Snell is a no for me. New pitching is a yes. Young pitching is a yes. And the Yankees need to use strategies that support the very heart beat, the very being of the team- culture eats strategy for breakfast. Wait before you just buy. Consider who you have, who deserves to be paid and be sure before you go after players. Honestly, why would you want to come to the Yankees in their current state if you could go to a team and contend with strong leadership in your corner? Maybe players should just say no to the Yankees this free agency- now wouldn't that be a statement.

THE YANKEES HAVE THEIR EYE ON THIS STARTING STUD PITCHER THAT EVERYONE WANTS!

The Yankees better start thinking about next season, because the Yankees have some big holes and not a lot of top end talent available. Hal Steinbrenner has promised to take a "deep dive" and really study how the Yankees operate. IF he plans to use new resources to spend money, he won't have the cream of the crop to choose from.

The Yankees have been awful offensively for a long time. They definitely need to balance out their lineup and that means adding some left-handed hitters in the lineup for sure. That has to get done for sure but.... what about the pitching?

The Yankees have at least two starters they need to replace. The writing is on the wall, Luis Severino isn't coming back and neither is Domingo German. It's time to move on but there isn't a lot of great free agents out there, assuming Hal wants to trust Brian Cashman to just throw more money into a free agent and hope it magically fixes the problem.

Every team is going to be checking in on Shohei Ohtani, regardless of the fact that he won't be pitching in 2024. The Yankees will check in because we check in on every big-name free agent, but I feel confident saying Ohtani will not be wearing pinstripes. That is the motherload of all longshots. It's out there.... he doesn't want to play for the Yankees, and he prefers to stay on the west coast. Mark this off the list.

So who is available? The other names on the list aren't super exciting, check it out HERE. Some of the biggest names out there are Blake Snell, Aaron Nola and Sonny Gray. Let's just cross Gray off the list (been there done that) and I'm not excited about Snell. Nola has finished top five in Cy Young voting twice in his career, so that top end starter potential the Yankees need is there. He was a big reason why the Phillies were able to make it to the World Series, and he could be an instant upgrade to our rotation. 2023 hasn't been a great season for him, but he is still a workhorse and should get plenty of attention this winter. The Yankees will check in on Nola too but....is this it?

No, there's another option. Yoshinobu Yamamoto is the new Japanese superstar that is on every MLB team's radar right now. The Orix Buffaloes will reportedly post their ace this off-season, and several teams are getting ready to pounce, read more HERE. There's a lot to like about Yamamoto's resume: 

"He was Japan’s Pacific League MVP in 2021 with a 1.39 ERA, including 206 strikeouts in 193.2 innings. In 2022, Yamamoto lowered his ERA to 1.65. And this year, his ERA is down to a ridiculous 1.26 as of last week, while averaging a strikeout an inning."

He could be the game changer in the rotation that the Yankees are looking for. Sure, the Yankees signed Carlos Rodon last winter thinking he would fill that role, but he hasn't yet. Maybe Yamamoto can and maybe he will. Oh and, considering that Cashman and advisor Omar Manaya flew to Japan to watch him pitch a no-hitter on September 9th, the Yankees may decide the other free agents are Plan B and go all in on Yamamoto.

Will the Yankees take another splash on a Japanese pitcher? Maybe, and maybe their success with Masahiro Tanaka could help steer Yamamoto to wear pinstripes. I hope that could be an advantage, but the Red Sox are also interested, and they have their own Japanese success stories to brag about.

I don't know what the Yankees are going to do.... but the Yankees need pitching depth and Yamamoto looks pretty enticing. Now the challenge is, can the Yankees persuade him to land here after this disastrous season? That's a real and scary question.

DON'T WORRY CASHMAN, I DON'T GIVE UP ON THE YANKS, I GAVE UP ON YOU!

"Don't give up on us. ... This is a championship-caliber operation." - Brian Cashman

The always articulate (*sarcasm*) spin doctor Brian Cashman said that and a lot more. You can read that HERE in case you didn't hear all of it or want to make your eyes and ears bleed some more. It's the same song and dance.  We've seen this press conference before. The only difference is now the calendar has flipped to 2023.

The "championship-caliber operation" that Cashman is referring to is with another organization right now. It is so crazy how BAD this team is and it's not just ONE thing holding this team back. There's a long line of history to prove that. Yes, the injuries suck....but the injuries are not the SOLE reason this team is losing. There is so much more to this.

So sorry, Cashman....I am not buying what you are selling. Are the Yankees injury riddled? YES. In fact, that looks like it got worse after yesterday's game. You can't ignore the other optics at play here - there have been some horrific trades, as well as an incompetent medical staff, a lot of failed analytics and a complete lack of accountability.

Let's start with the bad trades, and not just the trades that are STILL on this team. I hated the Jordan Montgomery trade when it happened. How do you trade away the most capable pitcher whose name ISN'T Gerrit Cole? Then he trades for Frankie Montas who admitted himself that he WAS NOT 100% healthy and then Cashman tries to deflect that. Let's not forget the failure that Sonny Gray was in New York and then there is useless Aaron Hicks and my favorite failure Joey Gallo who was and still is not worth a bucket of baseballs. I am now haunted by his introductory press conference in February 1998, when he conceded that identifying talent wasn’t a personal strength of his as a new GM. The same holds true today 25 years later. In fact, that is the understatement of the century. He's not the only one who is terrible at it....I'd say scouting as a WHOLE sucks. He's just the face of it, unfortunately for him.

And what about the awful medical staff? The biggest standout for me is when Aaron Judge had tests done to get to the bottom of his chronic right shoulder pain in 2020. The tests also revealed a fracture of the ribs AND a collapsed lung that had actually occurred in September of 2019! It would've healed faster and properly if you know.....it had actually been diagnosed at the time, but it wasn't. This team as a whole, just can't stay healthy anyway. I thought the strength and conditioning staff was supposed to you know....help condition and give them routines to STAY healthy. Do you remember Dana Cavalea? He was the Yankees strength and conditioning coach from 2007-2013. They fired him after an injury riddled season and the Yankees failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Novel concept, huh?

There is a complete lack of accountability with this organization as a whole. Hal Steinbrenner continues to trust a GM that has proven he is NOT capable of building a championship caliber team. He trusts a manager that also cannot win....and there are no consequences for it anymore. We all know there USED to be accountability but he is no longer here to get things done. The buck stops with Cashman, and since he has a track record that shows he CAN'T do the job....it's time for someone else to step in and rescue this organization.

Cashman....I don't give up on my team. Yankee faithful do not give up on their team. We still bleed blue. We just give up on you. There's a big difference.

PLEASE TELL ME THAT AARON HICKS IS DONE ALREADY!

You know that sinking feeling you get when you know something is going to wrong? Yea that is the feeling I get every time Aaron Hicks comes up to bat. You know, buzz kill, rally buster, deflation expert? Yea, that is Hicks to me. I really try to stay positive in my posts, as my colleague Steve Azul from the Bleed Blue Show encourages me to do, but I have nothing but negativity when I see Hicks in the lineup, And when he gets up with runners in players in scoring position, that is a whole other kind of rage. So, my question or rather my plea: Please Tell Me That Aaron Hicks is Done Already!

"Looking for a spark on offense, the Yankees made a few changes to their lineup as well. Willie Calhoun gets the start at designated hitter with Aaron Hicks shifting to left field and Oswald Peraza getting the nod at second base," reported NJ.com. I'm sorry, what? Aaron Hicks is giving spark to the offense?

In Monday night's loss to the Twins, Aaron Hicks performed as expected. "With two outs and nobody on in the first, Aaron Hicks took advantage of a rare start by bunting Gray's first pitch directly towards the mound. He didn't drag it. He didn't really do much of anything. He just fed it to the catcher, who lobbed on to first for the out," reported FanSided. In fact Hicks in the lineup provides absolutely no value to this struggling Yankee team. 

As the New York Post writes, "If the 2022 baseball season seemed like a nightmare for the talented Hicks, 2023 looks far worse so far. Overlooked amid all the bouquets thrown ace pitcher Gerrit Cole’s way after the Yankees’ 2-0 victory last Sunday was an offensive performance by Hicks that qualifies as memorably bad — three at-bats and three strikeouts out of the No. 9 hole against his original Minnesota Twins team."

On the road, Tuesday night against that same Minnesota team, he was equally lackluster. Hicks is batting an abysmal .120, trying to earn bases through walks which has backfired with backward Ks for the former center fielder now utility outfielder.

"The Yankees do not like to admit their mistakes, and no one relishes eating $30 million, which is no crime. But while Hicks’ seven-month slump appears to have no ending in sight — he had an 86 OPS+ last year, and it’s -12 now (though that’s only through 22 at-bats) — there isn’t any suggestion his Yankees tenure is anywhere near its close," reported The Post.

With Giancarlo Stanton on the IL for an indefinite amount of time and Harrison Bader still battling to come back, it looks like Hicks is around for a little while longer. But honestly, if the Yankees want to get anywhere this season, they need to find a trade partner or DFA the guy. Listen if Sonny Gray and Joey Gallo can find a new lease on baseball life somewhere else, why can't Hicks? He could play outfield for another team and maybe revive himself like his two former teammates. 

Please tell me that Hicks is done being a Yankees and Brian Cashman, somehow and some way can find a way to drop the guy off at another ball club that can welcome him with open arms? Maybe we can get someone of equal need of rehabilitation to come to New York in return. Honestly, anything would be better than watching Hicks trot toward balls in the outfield and swing through pitches from both sides of the plate. It's frustrating and it needs to be done already.
