CORA'S ARROGANT, SELFISH ACT TAINTED THE GAME OF BASEBALL IN THE PROCESS

Alex Cora should never be allowed to step on a baseball field again... at any level... ever.  The Red Sox know this. That's why they and he parted ways.  WEEI writes this:

"On Tuesday night, the Red Sox put out a statement saying the organization and Cora have mutually parted ways following MLB's investigation into the Astros' sign stealing scheme. 

On Tuesday, Astros manager A.J. Hinch was suspended a year and then fired along with GM Jeff Luhnow. 'Today we met to discuss the Commissioner’s report related to the Houston Astros investigation,' the Red Sox said in a statement. 

'Given the findings and the Commissioner’s ruling, we collectively decided that it would not be possible for Alex to effectively lead the club going forward and we mutually agreed to part ways. 'This is a sad day for us. Alex is a special person and a beloved member of the Red Sox. We are grateful for his impact on our franchise. We will miss his passion, his energy and his significant contributions to the communities of New England and Puerto Rico.'...

The Red Sox will hold a press conference Wednesday."

The Red Sox are trying to get ahead of it.  Sad. Don't forget, they were investigated for stealing signs in 2017 when John Farrell was at the helm, but they are also getting investigated for stealing signs in 2018... you know, when Alex Cora, the former bench coach of the Astros showed up to manage and to teach new, better ways of cheating using technology in Beantown. In other words, he not only tainted the team, he tainted the game. He struck twice.

Pete Rose didn't taint the game. Pete Rose bet on baseball and tainted himself. But everyone in baseball knows he played the game better than many in history.  Looking at all this garbage around us these few days... it's now crystal clear to me that Pete Rose deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. He did his time. We have a new loser in town... and his name is Alex Cora.

My 17 year old was pretty vocal about Alex Cora tonight. Don't forget, this kid has been watching baseball for a long time, even playing it himself.  He was pretty up front about it tonight...

"You know, Cora just got smug as he took manager for the Red Sox. He was likable before he got there, but it was almost like he knew he was getting away with something. Now that we know he's a crooked guy, it's one of those things where he just tarnished his reputation. He'll never recover."

That's a smart kid.  Reputation is huge and he's right, Alex Cora is done.  Sure, his close friends will never leave his side, but this guy is a piece of trash and he not only led the Red Sox down a bad road, he led the Astros down a dark tunnel as well... a tunnel with a TV featuring a live feed of the game and a trash can of course.

Alex Cora helped taint two teams and these fucking morons followed him... thinking they could get away with using strategic technology to steal signs and win a championship each.  Sure, I guess you can look at Alex Cora and suggest he's the smartest guy in the room. But I look at him and suggest that if he's a regular guy... he's going to jail for a long time.  Regular folks who cheat get in a ton of trouble.  Instead, the ridiculous Red Sox organization, knowing good and well that they would look bad in the Cora situation, decided that if they "parted ways", Cora doesn't look as bad, and the Red Sox can separate themselves from embarrassment.

But here's the thing. THIS IS NOT OVER and fans do not forget. And that's my favorite part of this.  Rob Manfred, who I have never been a huge fan of, did something historic for baseball with the Astros and Hinch yesterday, and will hopefully do something so big to Alex Cora, that it will be media worthy, a life lesson for millions and a noble attempt to save the game of baseball once and for all. Rob Manfred needs to ban Alex Cora for life from the game of baseball.  For Alex Cora has tainted the game. He brought dozens down with him to win... something destructive and selfish. Oh yea... and also wrong and against the rules.

No one, and I mean NO ONE can defend this behavior of Hinch and Cora. I mean, Roy Oswalt tried, but it fell flat just like it did for Logan "Moron" Morrison.

So let me get this right. You steal signs and get fired, but you do steroids and get millions of dollars in contracts and inducted into the Hall of Fame? #makesnosense

Didn't work, he looks like a fool.  You can't be Mr. Astro and try to defend a team that is in hot water so badly, you think you can make a difference on Twitter. Oswalt tried, he failed.  Morrison tried, he just looks like a freaking tool in the process because he's irrelevant.

You know who's opinion matters?  It's not players, it's not broadcasters or sports writers... it's the fans...US FANS!

Fans pay big money to go to games. Fans want to see wins and loses fairly. Fans know the best team is on the field for them... and the idea of cheating isn't in the back of their mind because they pay their hard earned money to see the best try and beat the best on the other team.

That's their money at work. And when you start to cheat your way to championships and get caught, you screw the fans... you taint the game.

And that's why Alex Cora is a clown... and that's why no Oswalt or Morrison has a leg to stand on... it's just white noise.

CC Sabathia says it best, because when CC speaks, the banging of the drum begins. He is so well respected in baseball and he's not formulating an opinion that tries to defend wrongdoing.  He simply sticks with the fans and their thoughts on the whole thing. ESPN here...

"...as investigations went on...I was like, well, we can't go back and play the games...but as more information started to come out, I'm like, we played a seven-game series in 2017, ALCS, and we lost really on kind of like one pitch.... As everything's been coming out, and the more facts that we get, it's getting frustrating man, to sit here and know that late in my career I could've had a title, maybe '17 or maybe '18, but we got cheated out of a team kind of doing something that's not within the rules of the game."

And that's what it comes down to... RULES.

Cora felt like he was above all of us. But Alex Cora is now the new punching bag.  It's no longer Pete Rose, he did his time. It's no longer Alex Rodriguez, he paid his dues and did his time. It's Alex Cora, the ringleader, the menace, the destroyer of the greatest game in the world and the most selfish bastard ever. The one that thought he could fool everybody.

Rob Manfred needs to do his duty. Sure, the Astros got theirs pretty severely, but now it must fall on Cora.  Ban the man, Mr. Manfred!  Ban him from baseball for life. He cheated the Astros, the Red Sox and the fans... a horrible thing to do to such an incredible game.

PABLO SANDOVAL FLIRTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA & GETS BENCHED

BUSTED!! It must be SOOOO hard for a player to sit through an entire game without playing on social media. Well....at least it is for Pablo Sandoval. Go ahead Pablo, the game and your team will wait for you, no worries. Some people can't resist the social media bug apparently.

Sandoval would be one of these people. He admitted to reports in Atlanta that he was been benched as a punishment for not following the MLB Standards and On-Field Operations Regulations, read that HERE. Sandoval defends himself by saying he grabbed his phone basically at the wrong place at the wrong time. So, you mean to tell me you can't walk to the bathroom and do your business without jumping on Instagram? First of all, GROSS. That is bad hygiene. Second of all.....HI there is a game going on. Where is your sense of priority? Maybe if you can't get through a three hour game then maybe you just shouldn't play. I hope your chic gazing on Instagram was worth it.

Sure, Sandoval reportedly apologized to his team and his managers and admitted he was wrong but that was disrespectful. Your team is in last place and nine games out in the middle of June. He should be more interested in getting back in the race, but apparently checking out chics is more important. I don't understand the apology either. You admit you screwed up but then you can't commit to correcting the issue. Here is a quote from Sandoval:

"It was the first time, so I take the mistake and learn from that. I move forward to try not to do it anymore. It's one thing I let my teammates down. Ain't going to happen no more, so I learned from that."

You will TRY not to do it again? Then you say it won't happen again. That is contradicting and really not convincing. This scenario may not have been as big of an issue if the team was playing well. However, they aren't scoring runs, the pitching is lackluster and their defense is awful. The team lacks chemistry and heart. Sounds a lot like the team is spiraling out of control like they did back in 2011. Has this team hit rock bottom? Maybe. At this point, management is trying to jump in and right the ship. Has John Farrell lost control of his team? It looks like it.

Does this top the 2011 scandal? I mean, the players involved in that drama were not playing in the game. In this scenario, Sandoval was in the lineup! The drama never ends. When does the chicken and beer come back?

When a top story is Shane Victorino of the Red Sox texted a funny picture of his "abs" to his manager John Farrell... you know BYB was correct in keeping non-stories to the cutting room floor. There is literally no exciting news in Yankeeland or the Baseball world really...

GETTING TO THE CORE OF BIG PAPI'S TRUTH

Truth hurts. 

There is something to be said about a guy that is easily angered by something that’s said about him. Because, let’s face it, David Ortiz is Selig’s Golden Boy and over time, even Papi thinks he's untouchable. 

He’s the unofficial Ambassador of Major League Baseball.  He can say the “F” word on National Television and people think it’s hysterical.   

He can disrespect pitchers and walk out of the batter’s box because “he knew it was gonna be a ball.”  He can give opinions on the Cubs and how they're terrible because they play day games.  He can give thoughts on PEDs users… Oh yeah, and he can show up on a leaked list of failed PEDs users in 2003 and side step it, vowing to find out why he showed up on that list... only to not.  Let me tell you something; David Ortiz is a liar and it’s time for a breakdown of Bud Selig’s Super hero.  The truth hurts David, and that’s why you’re upset with members of the MLB Network suggesting you got a “free pass” on the PEDs stuff.  You know what? You did! Get over yourself.

Now, for any of you living under a rock, on the MLB Network the other day, a few of the commentators, namely Joe Magrane, gave some analysis on the Biogenesis investigation.  Magrane was suggesting that Ortiz may have gotten away with PED use, showing up on that 2003 PEDs list. In other words, they thought Ortiz skated while others were punished.  Ortiz walks freely and does whatever the hell he wants, including hugging Bud Selig after the 2013 World Series.  Back then, I was disgusted and tweeted this:

It was popular on Twitter, and that’s because it was true. 

Now let me go back for a moment to put this whole thing into context. It started with John Lackey taking a shot at Nelson Cruz, a guy who played well in the O's, Red Sox doubleheader this past weekend, and a guy who was suspended for PEDs, but now back playing for the O’s. Lackey said to the media after the game:  "You guys forget pretty conveniently about stuff", meaning Cruz was suspended for PEDs, and insinuated that perhaps he's still guilty, I guess. Interesting.   

Buck Showalter then shot back and said: "everybody needs to make sure that their own backyard is clean."  Nice comeback... and true.

That’s when the MLB Network and Magrane brought up Papi. And now Ortiz has fired back at MLB Network. Ortiz telling WEEI:

“In this country, nobody gets a free pass… he wants to make it sound like I got a free pass because nobody can point fingers at me directly. But the reason why I got that fake [expletive] free pass that he's saying is because they pointed fingers at me with no proof.  It's easier to do it that way than having something that they can say, 'Yes, you did this, you did that.' My [expletive], I call straight-up bull. Let me tell you. You don't get no free pass here, especially a guy like me. I don't get no free pass. That free-pass B.S. that they want to talk about over there, they can shove it up their [expletive]." 

Now look, there are plenty of things wrong with this statement.  Besides the fact that Ortiz sounds uneducated, once again, he fired expletives like they’re going out of style. Will he get heat for that? No, but he should.

Next, his tone. Abrasive, and let me state for the record that there were other names on that survey test list in 2003 that were listed as a positive test, and eventually, some of them WERE suspended.  For some reason, Papi is the Golden Boy, and I'm not so sure why.  

But here’s the thing; and I’m not defending Alex Rodriguez, or Manny Ramirez or Ryan Braun or any of these guys… the whole thing is despicable. All I’m suggesting is, if you’re on a list for testing positive for a PED, I'm 90% sure you used it just like the rest of them.

Ortiz can walk the earth like he’s squeaky clean all he wants, we know he’s not. And hey, that’s my opinion, just like it was Magrane's opinion suggesting Ortiz got a “free pass.”  It’s also my opinion that Ortiz is guilty.  

Papi can cry all he wants, but that list existed… and David was on it.  Ortiz said this of the MLB commentators:   "What pisses me off is the whole thing about, why does my name got to be mentioned in that?”   

WHY? Why does your name have to be mentioned? Well, because you were on the list, Golden Boy, that's why!  The MLB community knows this, David. Baseball fans know this.  Even Red Sox fans know this and while they don’t want to openly admit it, they know it’s true. In fact, the only person who doesn’t accept it is you!  

I remember the last time a baseball player denied using after a test came back positive. He eventually turned around and admitted guilt... and was suspended.  His name was Ryan Braun. I’m not calling you Braun, Papi, but I am telling you, you know what you were on the list for, sir.

When John Farrell came out backing Ortiz this week, I practically fell out of my chair. He said, "...It's unfortunate that the innuendo continues to follow him."

It may be unfortunate, but the word innuendo means "an allusive or oblique remark or hint". Correct, we're "hinting" about Ortiz showing up on that 2003 PEDs list, because the list "hinted" there was some truth to his positive test.  In fact, this is how the report on that 2003 list went down. This report is from Deadspin:

" In 2003, MLB conducted survey testing to determine the extent of PED use in baseball. Among those who tested positive (though we wouldn't learn it for another six years) was David Ortiz..."

Now, while the PED wasn't considered illegal at the time of testing, he still showed up on that list! My thinking is simple; if Ortiz was truly hell bent about testing positive, he should have spent his Red Sox money and done an investigation to get to the bottom of it!  But instead, he vowed to find out WHY he tested positive.  Well, that hasn't happened. Now it's 2014 and we're still waiting.

But the best part is, now others, besides BYB have come out suggesting Ortiz got a "free ride", and somehow, Ortiz thinks that's wrong.  Hey David, we didn't make up history, you were on that list. Deal with it, admit it.  And hey, it's not like I dislike you and want to embarrass you. I'm annoyed because what’s right is right… you’re as guilty as the rest of them!

It’s clear we’ve reached Papi’s core and the truth is there somewhere. I'm tired of Bud Selig holding this guy on a pedestal while the others suffer. The whole thing is despicable. Every single part of it.

"I OFFERED YOU A CHANCE... AND YOU BLEW IT!"

I am growing sick and tired of the "hurry up and wait" of Michael Pineda.

First, he comes over from the Mariners in a trade for Jesus Montero.  Then he gets hurt. Then he comes back and then he gets hurt again and surgery is required. Then he makes it back and the story is glorious. "Pitcher fights his way all the way back." I was excited for him. 

Then the world sees pine tar on his pitching hand against the Red Sox. OK. Fine, maybe we were seeing things...

Then he's got a giant hickey on his neck the next time we play the Red Sox. "No wait," says Red Sox Manager John Farrell, "That's pine tar." Then Pineda gets suspended for 10 days. Then he pitches in Tampa this week just to stay loose while he's serving out his suspension and suddenly, he's hurt.

I'm not kidding.

News is that Pineda has a Grade 1 strain of his back muscle. I mean, Unbelievable. That comes from Meredith Marakovits:

HEY YANKEE HATERS... I GET IT!

I live in a world full of Yankee haters. It's true. Transplant New Yorker here through and through so let me tell you, it is not easy handling the fall-out of Michael Pineda and his use of pine tar not once....but twice.

So remember the first time Pineda was caught with an "unknown substance" that was on his wrist? Well, the good old ex just couldn't resist digging into that one. The next morning I got the standard "HAHA Pineda is a cheater. He's a real Yankee now" text. He's a Red Sox fan so that is to be expected I guess. Now why I ever dated a Red Sox fan is a whole other story for a different time.

That was bad enough. I mean, any other comments made I just issued the standard "come on, everyone does it. Most just don't get caught." Or I also used the "Where were you last year when Clay Buchholz was also accused of the same thing? John Farrell didn't seem to disapprove!" That seemed to diffuse any rebuttals but man.....fool me once, shame on you Pineda! Fool me twice well....shame on me and I don't have a good defense to offer you.

I thought on Thursday I was going to be safe. No one said a word to me. NO ONE! It was like sports fans everywhere just didn't watch the game or pick up a newspaper or.....read this blog! I thought I dodged a bullet....boy was I wrong.

My alarm clock did not wake me up this morning. Nooooo, that was my Mets loving father. He is awake and at work before vampires and zombies disappear. So of course, when it is dark out my text notification goes off and I read this.

Dad: "NICE win last night! Bad job getting caught cheating. What's up with the Pine tar?!"
Me: -____-
Dad: "Someone should've shown him how to be less obvious."
Me: "Yes dad, he made a bad decision."
Dad: "Bad decision? HA! Cheater, cheater, cheater."

Well, I can't really be surprised by that. So after a few hours I finally get into the office. I'm still half dead thanks to my un-godly wake up call. So while I am trying to find an IV to pump coffee through me I get this:

Orioles fan: "Hey Jeana! You have a little something on your collar-bone area there."
Me:*foolishly brushing away* "Is it gone? What is it?"
Orioles fan: "Well now we know who Pineda's supplier is"
Me: "You are lucky I haven't had my coffee yet..."

So after I finally got a cup of coffee in me....

Diamondbacks fan: "Hey Jeana! Is that a hickey on your neck?"
Me: *gives him the "REALLY?! not clever" death stare*
Diamondbacks fan: "Must not be, it isn't brown."
Me: "Very cute. Did you come up with that by yourself?"
Diamondbacks fan: *pulls out his phone and shows it to me* "No, I stole it off of a Meme I found online."
Me: "Yeah, yeah....he did something stupid. Not like he is the first one to do it."
Diamondbacks fan: "None of our pitchers do that, definitely not Wade Miley."
Me: "Your pitchers also can't seem to pitch effectively, either. Maybe THEY need some."
Diamondbacks fan: "Ouch. I will give you that though, since you are down Ivan Nova and now Michael Pineda's reputation is shot."

And it continued later at lunch.....there is a little Arizona version of what is supposed to be a deli down the street. The guy who owns it is a big San Francisco Giants fan. He got his digs in too.

Deli owner: *shakes head* "Your boy Pineda got off easy."
Me: "I know."
Deli owner: "What's up with the 10 game suspension? The crime doesn't fit the punishment. With the way your schedule is he will only miss 1 start. $20 says he does it again."
Me: "I think he learned his lesson."
Deli owner: "What about your management? They should've doe a better job stopping that after he did it the first time. They didn't manage him. Matt Cain would never do something like that."
Me: -____-

So look Pineda, I get it. This isn't a crucifixion or anything. I will say this though, I feel like Matlock or something because I felt like I was in the court of sports law today! Just go out there and kick some butt please! That will shut up all of the haters.

IT'S NOT PINEDA-GATE, IT'S PINE TAR. GET OVER YOURSELF

The rulebook states that a foreign substance being used by pitchers to doctor the ball is illegal.  If you use it and get caught, you’re ejected and most likely suspended.  That happened to Michael Pineda. He was dumb, real dumb… almost like he wanted to get caught.  I mean for crying out loud, it wasn’t like the dude was late to the game, jumped off his motorcycle and accidentally wiped bike grease on his neck as he was getting his uniform on. He put it there on purpose.

It was out in the opened.  He admits that and you know what? He was disciplined and to be honest... now it’s over.  That’s unless you read the blogs and media all over the world today, who are reviewing the incident as severely as rape or PEDs use. Yup, what I wrote is extreme, but it’s to make a point; He cheated ,he blew it and it’s the 24th of April. I don't feel like reviewing every other doctoring incident caught on camera because I'll be here all day. Plus, it's a silly exercise. I'm talking about the hammering of dumb Michael Pineda.  I am stating it here... this incident is now behind us.

I tweeted this last night and I meant it:

The line of questioning from reporters last night was too similar to a Congressional hearing. There were even slick beat writers almost trying to trip the guy up because of the language barrier, almost to get him to say something scandalous  Sure, Michael Pineda messed up, but he could have hid behind the Yankee machine and never talked to the media last night.  What he did was the right thing to do.  He took his lumps like a man, and now he needs to deal with the punishment. Case close. I'm not so sure investigators need to go to him home and look for more pine tar evidence, you know what I mean?

Ironically, through most of this, I was coaching Little League when my phone blew up as I stood in our dugout. “Pineda got pinched”. “Did you see the pine tar on Pineda’s neck?” I got a quick update and continued on my way with our own game. The funniest parallel I can tell you is that it was damn cold last night and our pitchers were freezing.  They couldn’t grip the ball. One of the kids said,"I wish we could use something to get a good grip.”  I said, “You can’t do that, it’s illegal”, knowing good and well that pitchers have been using some sort of grip on the ball for decades.

Look, my position on this is simple; If you need it, use it. But if you get caught, don’t deny it and take your lumps.  John Farrell did the right thing last night, but he was also a pitcher who most likely used, or knew someone who used pine tar in his clubhouse in his career.  Joe Girardi was a catcher who knows all about it too I’m sure.  These 2 did their best tap dance to the media.  The media let them slide, because it’s not supposed to be talked about. "Those to managers are old school, but Pineda, he's new in this HD world where everything is amplified! Let's get him!"

Meanwhile, Al Leiter, was as giddy as ever and talking to the audience in the post-game, openly admitting to using pine tar on his belt to get a grip.  In other words, it’s no big deal… or is it if it’s literally on your face?

What Michael Pineda did was stupid.  But it’s over.  Overkill in the New York media over an incident like this will erupt into something more. It will fester.  Look for a ton of managers to examine Pineda, or others every game now.  Is it fair? Sure. Go for it. My point is this is nothing new. Life should go on like it did before Pineda.

In the end, this isn’t PEDs being shot up in his ass on the mound during a live game ladies and gentlemen.  This isn’t murder. This is pine tar on a 30 degree, windy night. It’s not a scandal, it’s a dumb mistake.

Pineda’s suspended… let’s move on, OK?
