JEFF PASSAN JUST PUT THE YANKEES ON BLAST!

SHOTS FIRED! I love some good baseball drama....and this is definitely some off field drama. Baseball insider Jeff Passan was a guest on The Michael Kay Show, and he didn't hold back on how he sees the current state of the Yankees and Hal Steinbrenner's perceived lack of spending this winter.

"If the (luxury tax) penalties are so tough, then why are the Dodgers and Mets doing it? The Mets have been the past two years, and they've shown a willingness to go there," Passan said on Kay's podcast. "And at the end of the day, these are the New York freaking Yankees. If a luxury tax threshold is impeding them, that says more about where they are than it does the luxury tax itself. When have the Yankees ever played third fiddle in baseball? That's where they are right now when it comes to spending."

I will say this, it's not for a lack of trying by the Yankees. They made a HUGE offer to Juan Soto and it may have limited other additions to the team if Soto had accepted. The Yankees pivoted and made some good moves to strengthen both the infield and the outfield especially with a big commitment made to Max Fried. We improved several areas, especially within the infield and I really don't think we are completely done.

The Yankees traditionally spend money. We can't call them cheap when they spent well over $300 million in payroll last year and they had the second highest payroll only behind the New York Mets. You can argue that the Yankees don't spend their money wisely (and I do!) but saying they don't spend money is just false. 

The Mets are operating at a loss, it's not up for debate that Steve Cohen is paying out of pocket but he's also worth $22 billion dollars! The Dodgers ownership group has a large net worth so they also have money to spend AND have proven they will defer money as they see fit to try and avoid stiff penalties. The idea of deferring $1.3 BILLION dollars blows my mind. The Yankees should go over the luxury tax to make the last few upgrades they need in order to win a championship, but I think we need to recognize there is new, bigger money in baseball. The Yankees are "old" money, and the Dodgers and Mets are "new" money. It's a new baseball world whether we like it or not.

And as the Yankees are competing against the "new money" Dodgers and Mets, they are also operating in a much different mindset. When George Steinbrenner was alive, the Yankees were a life passion for him. He spent the money because he wanted to win and that was what mattered most to him. Now we have "new" vision Hal running the team, and he's not running it as passion.... it's a business for him. Businesses are all about the bottom line. He wants to win, but not with the same determination or drive his dad did.

So I understand why Passan is throwing shade because no team in the old-world order outspent the Yankees. Everything changes over time and even if other teams are spending more, they certainly aren't being cheap. If this is Passan's way of motivating the Yankees to re-sign Tim Hill or a strong third basemen then I am all for it because honestly.... I want Hill back BAD!

WILLY ADAMES? YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!

Bob Nightengale of USA Today is back, tossing offseason spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks. This time, he’s stirring up the Yankees rumor mill, throwing out a scenario so convoluted it feels like a fever dream. If the Yankees don’t re-sign Juan Soto—because apparently, that’s an option—they might respond with a mad scramble to:

1.Sign free-agent first baseman Christian Walker.

2.Bring in either Willy Adames or Alex Bregman to play third base.
3.Move Jazz Chisholm to second base.
4.Trade for Cody Bellinger.

Simple.

It’s like one of those overcomplicated heist movies where you lose track of the plot halfway through. Classic Bob Nightengale. 

Let’s cut through the noise: there’s no real traction to this Adames-to-the-Yankees idea. It’s speculation, pure and simple, and Bob’s good at that. But hey, it’s fun to imagine. Maybe next Trevor Bauer will go to the Mets.

Willy Adames is coming off a solid year and would be a fantastic addition to any team. He’s one of the best power-hitting shortstops in the game and has said he’d prefer to stay at shortstop. However, he’s also open to shifting to third base if needed—versatility that makes him a tantalizing target for teams like the Yankees or Mets apparently.

For the Brewers, losing Adames wouldn't be great. Not only is he a key player, but he’s also a leader in the clubhouse according to reports. I don't know the Brewers well, but that's the way it seems. 

Adames has hinted he’d take a hometown discount to stay in Milwaukee—but only to a point. As he told The Athletic: "I’m willing to stay here for less money, let’s say, but I just want to be fair for what I deserve in my career. We just have to wait and see where we’re at."

And now we get to the voice of reason: Jeff Passan. When Passan speaks, baseball fans listen. He’s right up there with Jack Curry and Pete Caldera—arguably the top three baseball reporters out there. While Nightengale’s rumors are like a fast-food drive-thru, Passan is the five-star restaurant of insight.

In his offseason preview, Passan doesn’t just toss Adames at the Yankees for fun. Instead, he points to the Giants as the most logical landing spot. With new president of baseball operations Buster Posey prioritizing the shortstop position, the fit is almost too good to ignore.

Sure, Passan acknowledges the Yankees, Mets, and Dodgers could be in the mix, especially with Adames’ willingness to move to third base. But Passan’s call of Adames to San Francisco? That’s the kind of grounded, well-sourced prediction that makes sense.

So, could the Yankees swoop in and snag Adames? Anything’s possible, but this feels more like Bob Nightengale playing offseason DJ, spinning hypothetical hits. Meanwhile, Jeff Passan is the guy calmly taking the pulse of the market—and if he’s leaning toward the Giants, I’m buying it.

It's just how I feel, sorry Bob.

EMERGENCY PRESS CONFERENCE SLATED FOR 2PM TODAY ON YES!

There's heavy speculation the Yankees have their man.  The rumor is, and it's a big rumor... is that Juan Soto will be announced to be a New York Yankee today at 2pm on the YES Network. Or is it Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Whatever it is, tt's no joke.  

Also, I have no way of knowing that is what is happening and neither do any of the baseball insiders.  Not Jon Heyman, not Buster Olney, not SNY, not Andy Martino.   

I stick with guys like Jack Curry, Pete Caldera and Jeff Passan when it comes to legitimate Yankee transactions so those are the guys to listen to. Follow those guys and their tweets.

All of us will be watching the Presser at 2pm today on YES.

JEFF PASSAN IS A SAVAGE AND I LOVE IT

I'm tired of Ben Verlander's feelings. Toughen up buttercup.

No one cares about Ben Verlander. His claim to fame is being Justin Verlander's brother.  He has no experience, no value to his employer other than his name. If he doesn't realize he's a puppet than I don't know what else to say. Here's an idea... do something on your own.

The Shohei Ohtani obsession is ridiculous. Everyone knows it. and last night it was Jeff Passan's turn to explain to Ben Verlander that he probably needs to stop with that obsession. After all, and I've said this a 1000 times now, MLB Players do not have the luxury to be pitchers and hitters. If they did, there would be more than Shohei Ohtani, but once guys get into high school, many good pitchers and made into P.O.s and that bleeds over into college.  And that's usually the end of their hitting career. 

But Shohei is different because Shohei is a Japanese player who clearly was packaged as "take me this way or don't take me at all." MLB knew it was the perfect marketing tool. And so, they made the exception knowing it would make the league money. And Verlander fell into the trap.  

What's my point? Verlander is a pawn, and he's too dumb to see it.  But we all do and that's why Passan went after Verlander last night. Enough is enough. Verlander needs to shut up.

Passan is a stand-up guy in a corporate world and felt like he needed to delete his message and apologize. But he shouldn't have.  Sometimes hacks need to be put in their place and that's why Passan did what he did. Sure he picked a fight. But sometimes you need to pick a fight to make a point. Passan did, he's a stud.

P.S. I'm 5'7". My height has never clouded my delusion that I was being used by a company because of my name and lack of experience.  Verlander needs to STFU.

MAJOR CHANGES TO THE MLB DRAFT COULD HURT THE YANKEES

A major change to the MLB draft will impact the Yankees and every other team this year. The last major change came in 2012, when the draft was shortened from 50 rounds down to 40....but this summer we will have just five rounds. It's another side affect of the Coronavirus as Major League Baseball begins to regroup and bring baseball back.

Owners are looking for new ways to save some money thanks to this pandemic. I get it, baseball is a business but that doesn't mean I have to be thrilled about it right? I didn't believe the news at first, but it is true.

This decision will impact over 1,000 prospects that expected to be drafted this summer. These players will either sign undrafted and be eligible for a maximum $20,000 or wait until the next draft for more favorable terms. If I was a prospect right now I would be pretty bummed out. Some young and talented players could have to wait even longer for their big shot. From a team's perspective, this could really hurt any teams farm system for years to come. I can see why a lot of these front offices were pushing for a longer draft. You can read more about the specifics of the upcoming draft HERE.

The smaller draft does align with the league's proposal to eliminate a quarter of minor league teams, an idea that I don't like either...and it has been widely criticized. The Morning Call has a good breakdown of what that could mean HERE. The new draft is definitely a major concern for minor league teams, so it is something to watch.

So what does a five round draft look like for the Yankees this year? Well....definitely more strategic.

The first five rounds means that all thirty teams have plenty of talent to pick from. The athletes in the first few rounds are the cream of the crop, they have a good chance of progressing to the next level. Some may even say they have better odds, but regardless the first few rounds are important. This year that couldn't be more true for the Yankees. To say the first few rounds will be important to us is an understatement. Here's why....

The Yankees got their "white whale" when they signed Gerrit Cole this winter. We all know how important he is to us going forward, but when we signed Cole we also forfeit our second and fifth round picks of this upcoming draft, so we won't even get five picks. That leaves us with a first-round pick (Number 28 overall) and then a selection in the third and fourth rounds. The Yankees are going to have to be very strategic....and our scouts are going to be extra thorough.

It's an important point to realize here, the loss of the draft picks hurts BUT even if the Yankees had known they would be surrendering two of their five picks this summer they still should have signed Cole. The loss of the draft picks sucks, but missing out on Cole would have hurt a lot worse. Cole is a game changer, a draft pick is a "wait and see."

This draft will be different for the Yankees, but it's not necessarily bad. They can still sign undrafted players and maybe they will get a few of them. We have a few Yankees on the 40-man roster right now that were drafted after the 5th round. We all recognize Mike Tauchman, Chad Green, Luke Voit and Jonathan Holder, right? I guess we will have to wait and see what happens, the draft is expected to start on June 10th. I'm looking forward to it....are you?

MEET JASSON DOMINGUEZ: "THE NEXT MIKE TROUT"

Wow, no pressure or anything with that comparison and yes, there are two "S" in his name. The Yankees just used more than 90% of their International Pool money to sign one guy named Jasson Dominguez out of the Dominican Republic. Just one guy! That is unheard of. That's one hell of an investment.

Who on earth would compare a 16-year old kid to Mike Trout? That's crazy. Well scouts and other baseball officials are singing this kid's praises. Did the Yankees just strike liquid gold with this signing? Or did they put spend too much money on one guy? Time will tell, but a lot of people seem to think that this is money well spent, no matter how risky this move is.

Jeff Passan of ESPN has a great write-up on this HERE. Here are just a few things people are saying:

"I know this sounds crazy, but....he's like Mike Trout. And Trout wasn't close to this good when he was 16," said one general manager.

"Jasson has a game that's very much like Mike Trout -- except he's a switch hitter.I know it's a little unfair to put them next to each other. I've been doing this for a long time, he's the greatest talent I've seen," said Ivan Noboa, Dominguez's trainer.

"He's the best July 2 player I've ever seen," said another international scouting director.

"He's the kind of player that kind of makes the hair on your arm stand up." High praise from Yankees own International scouting Donny Rowland, HERE.

So you get it by now. He may only be a prospect now but people seem to think this kid is the next big thing. That's a lot of weight to carry around for a young kid. It's clear that the Yankees have gone all-in on this kid. The Yankees believe he could be a shortstop, or even a catcher but they believe his future is an outfielder, specifically center field. Dominguez is described as a five-tool player which includes speed, power, hitting for average, fielding and arm strength. His nickname is "The Martian" because of his out-of-this world talent, and even named after former Yankees slugger Jason Giambi. His name and his talent both scream future Yankee icon.

I was surprised to hear the Yankees spend so much money on one prospect, but I dig everyone's enthusiasm about this kid. The Yankees haven't been shy about spending a lot of money in the Dominican Republic and it has paid off so far: Gary Sanchez and Luis Severino were both signed from here as teenagers.I think the Yankees know what they are doing.

Welcome to the Yankees, kid. We are all anxious to see what you've got!

YANKEES ARE "COOLING" ON BUMGARNER

The clock is ticking down and Madison Bumgarner's days as a San Francisco Giant. We've been watching and speculating about where he may go for months now. The Yankees have always been tied to Bumgarner, but so have other top teams. We are just over one month away from the trade deadline so talks should be heating up, right?

It is rumored that the both the Yankees and the Twins have not been engaged in serious negotiations lately with the Giants. Shouldn't the teams with the best records in the American League be working hard to get a deal done with the Giants? According to reports, neither team is.

And even Jon Heyman says the Yankees interest in Bumgarner is "so-so" at this point, read more HERE. The Yankees are concerned with what they would be getting with Bumgarner, and understandably so. On Tuesday, Bumgarner looked like an ace against the Rockies only allowing 2 runs on three hits with 11 impressive strikeouts in 6 innings, but last week against the Dodgers was another story. That night he was schooled by the Dodgers where he only lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowed 10 hits and six earned runs. It's a tale of an inconsistent pitcher.

Tuesday's performance was special, but his stats this season are far from extraordinary. Bumgarner's 4-7 record, and 4.21 ERA makes him look ordinary, not an ace or reliable pitcher from years past. The Yankees are also rumored to be "split" based on advanced analytics that don't match up well in hitter friendly Yankee stadium read more HERE.

The Yankees are no doubt intrigued by Bumgarner's proven track record in the postseason. He's arguably one of the best MLB postseason pitchers of all time. In 16 career playoff appearances he has an 8-3 record with a 2.11 ERA. He's a three-time World Series Champion....any team would like that.

But that's the look of a vintage Bumgarner. Obviously the Yankees and the Twins have some concerns here. He has a month to prove to his new team would be buying a consistent top of the order pitcher, not a regressing rental. Until he does....it's no wonder why teams will continue to question his real value.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't questioning it too.

MARLINS HELL: CUTTING THROUGH HATE. GIVING YOU FACTS.

I have tremendous respect for Derek Jeter.  The media portrays him has a monster in Miami though.  Many of the stories are true.  This story by Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports where he says that scout Marty Scott was fired while in a hospital bed with cancer and waiting for a kidney... IS TRUE.

When I wrote about it last night (THE GRINCH OF MIAMI)... it was still true.  GET OVER IT.  The hate I've seen the past 12 hours directed at me, directed at Passan or anyone else who reported it is disgusting.  Get a life... take a walk, rake leaves, hug your kids... do ANYTHING other than kissing your Jeter poster. 

This is journalism.  There isn't hate, there is no agenda... this is solid journalism sprinkled with opinion. That's first.

Now... with good journalism... perhaps pointed journalism come updates. A good rule of thumb is YOU MUST UPDATE THE READERS IF THERE'S A STORY THIS HOT. It's what responsible writers do. It's what BYB does.

So let's cut through it.  Yes, Hill made the call, but Hill CANNOT just fire scouts. Hill MUST get approval from team owners Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman, and because everyone knows Derek Jeter... he's the connection to this story and how big it has become. Everyone in journalism knows how this works. Certain readers need to be smarter here.

Secondly, the guy's dying.  Marty Scott needed to secure COBRA insurance, apparently on his own.  I am baffled by why the Marlins didn't just cover it for him, considering his service with not only the Marlins but being a rep in baseball for nearly 40 years.  It's nuts to me, but in this regard, I guess business is business.  But you would HOPE that humanity takes a smart role in decisions like this.  Apparently not.

Anyway... to all the haters who think reporting this story is 'Fake News'... please decipher good journalism from bad.  This is good... this is accurate and now there is an update.

I leave you with this... this guy's got it all figured out.

WHY ARE THE BASEBALL VOTERS WHINING?

I'm having a hard time with all of this.  You know me.  For quite a while now I've been one of the writers that have voiced my opinion about steroid users in baseball and how it's a terrible thing to see.  My reason was simple; as my children get older, they ask questions.  As my kids get older and I teach them about cheating and performance in baseball and sports and the right from wrong and all of that, it was getting more difficult to explain to them, especially my now 15 year old. It's hard to explain to a young baseball player that many athletes use steroids and HGH to get ahead in this game, but he cannot.  It's a hard thing to explain to a kid, because for far too long they were taught about NOT cheating... and now their heroes are doing exactly that.

This whole thing about Joe Morgan writing a letter to voters lobbying them to not vote in candidates tied to steroids is interesting. No... it's fascinating.  Because what I've seen over the past few days is some of the biggest cry babies in the baseball writing complaining.  And these writers are people that I have long respected.  Writers that... I don't know... think they deserve an apology or are "insulted" because a letter like that went out to them in the first place.

Let me say that Joe Morgan was a dynamic ballplayer.  He also happens to be Vice Chairman of the board of directors for the Hall of Fame. But here's another part of it;  He doesn't want the Hall tainted.  That comes from him being one of those old timers who doesn't like what he's seeing in this game either.  But here's the other significant part to this.... it's a request from Morgan. It's an opinion, just like opinions from you and I or any of these baseball writers out there that are lucky enough to cast votes and decide who belongs and who doesn't when it comes to the Hall of Fame.

Reading Joel Sherman of the New York Post who I have for a long time respected, made my mouth drop open.  Here's some of it:

"...The baseball Hall of Fame, more than every other Hall combined, is the most meaningful and cherished by its fans. The debate and furor surrounding who gets in and who doesn’t is more intense than most major political elections in this country. It means people care. It also means that, like everything else in this nation’s life now, it is polarizing.

There are no easy answers for how to cast a vote. The passion of those who line up on the side of 'just vote for the best players regardless of confessions or innuendo' is as powerful as those opposed. If you are a voter — and I am — you are going to be called an idiot and/or soulless by lots and lots of people. This is part of the deal now. If you can’t take it, don’t vote. I would rather have the fervor that shows how important this is to people than have indifference."

But what Sherman doesn't seem the realize is the voters aren't some elite class. They were allowed the duty of voting, and they should do exactly that.  And this is going to sound cruel... I DON'T CARE HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT BEING RIPPED AFTER YOU MAKE A VOTE. It's the role you were lucky enough to have. So while Sherman suggests that "if you can't take it, don't vote", he continues to complain about being ridiculed like he deserves a medal.  It's either one of the other Joel. I'm surprised by that. That being said, this too will pass. I'm disappointed in Joel, but I'll get over it.

And this Jeff Passan "I quit" garbage is laughable. Did you see this?

That's right. He's doing something noble or something deciding to give up his vote. No one cares Jeff.  No one cares. Someone else will gladly take over. I'm not losing sleep, but I imagine you will one day regret that move.

I like Jeff.  I'm surprised he'd put down his sword so easily.  It shows weakness. It shows defeat.  These are writers that I've looked at for years for guidance and hints on how to perform and develop into a well read publication... and when it gets too hard, they wanna quit? THIS IS THE OCCUPATION YOU CHOSE. It's not all sunshine and rainbows and you know that. Not everyone will agree with you... where the hell are you running?

Tell me how to take over your duty of voting for the Baseball Hall of Fame, because I will gladly take it over.  This is something only fools do.  Stop it.

Joe Morgan can say whatever the hell he wants.  It's his opinion.  But what these whiny writers are forgetting is that for years their opinion, while many agree and many more don't meant something.  There was dialog! They sparked debate and they had some banter with their audience. And when it comes to the voting, they did what they thought was the right vote each season and while I would bitch and moan every single year... that's the game.  That's what the give-and-take is with baseball fans. We all know this. So complaining that it's HARD and that they CAN'T do it anymore is silly.

If I'm receiving that letter from Joe Morgan, I'm smarter than this. I'm sitting on it for a few days. Maybe I craft my own letter back to him appreciating his concerns and thanking him for starting this conversation in baseball once again.  But then... I'm moving on with my life.  Why? Because Morgan is entitled to his request. 

He's been around for a long, long time.  He's allowed to speak out... he's owed that.  But these writers? They forget just how much power they have in this game and especially with this exercise.  What they should have done was ignored this and moved on.  Instead, they're looking for sympathy from admirers like me, tying to put Morgan on blast publicly and you know what? I don't care.

Do your job... and in Jeff's situation, I guess you give up. Whatever ,man.  For a long, long time I admired the strength of these baseball writers / critics.  Now I see people like Morgan are weeding them out.  It's disappointing as an aspiring journalist, and it opens my eyes a lot.  The same folks who write opinion all day can't see the big picture; ultimately Morgan's concern is nothing more than an opinion.  Not a demand. Not an order... AN OPINION. Deceiver, guys... and stop whining.

In the end, being able to vote for the Hall of Fame is a very nice privilege.  But don't act like you're a God because of that duty. Instead, embrace it... and for the love of everything holy... take the responsibility and EVERYTHING THAT COMES WITH IT... and vote.

No one is gonna die, and fans like me always get over it.  Sure, some of us may not like who you vote in, but so what.  That's the responsibility of what you do.

And to Jeff Passan... seriously... if you don't want the duty any more, tell me who I need to talk to and I'll gladly take your spot.  Walking away is ridiculous and you of all people know that in the business you're in, this gimmick will only make you look smaller in the eyes of your critics and fans... and that's not you.

WAS THAT $65 MILLION OFFER TO HEADLEY MADE UP?

This is why I hate the rumor season. Because, while bloggers like ourselves are constantly questioned about "where we get our information", "baseball insiders" should be too.

Here's an example. A while back we had a documented conversation from a Rockies person that suggested that the Rockies had planned to present the Yankees with what they wanted in exchange for Troy Tulowitzki.  The price was way too high; prospects and "a lot" of Troy's salary.  We said then that while our source had that information and it was 100% solid, the price was ridiculous and we didn't believe it would happen.  We were questioned by baseball insiders for that story. (Read SOURCE ON ROCKIES: "THEY KNOW WHAT THEY WANT".)  My answer was simple. "You have your sources, I have mine." The story wasn't wrong. It was unique to what we found and that burned the insiders up. Oh well.  Here's the important part; We also walked the BYB reader through the whole process, as to not leave them high and dry, something that many "baseball insiders" do on the regular in the rumor season.

That brings me to today and that weird story that popped up about Chase Headley and how "a team" wanted to offer him 4 years and $65 million a few days ago, Read ONE TEAM THINKS CHASE HEADLEY'S WORTH $65 MILLION.  While the story again, IS NOT WRONG, it could be false.  Why? Here's why:

No team has stepped forward to take "responsibility" if you will.  The Giants were said to be aggressively pursuing Headley.  But according to Buster Olney, the Giants are not pursuing him:

Well, look... the idea that the Giants could be connected to Headley isn't exactly breaking news. BYB insinuated they'd be looking hard for 3rd basemen now that Pablo Sandoval is gone.

Headley is a logical choice, but the Giants are not that team... according to another baseball insider slapping down what the first baseball insider said.

It's Olney verses Passan.  Not exactly King Kong verses Godzilla... but still interesting.

That leaves the Yankees and Marlins as the only other 2 teams "interested" in Headley.  The Yankees haven't been too interested in giving Headley 4 years and to be honest, the money's too high.  My gut says the Yankees are out.  As far as the Marlins, I haven't heard much from them. Have you?

So I ask you, Jeff Passan... who's that team? You're a smart guy, you get the info regularly. You left the audience hanging.  You presented something about "a team" in on Headley for $65 million... WHO'S THE TEAM? Where's the update? Or... is it BS?

We'll track this for you guys.  Something doesn't seem right.  If Headley signs somewhere, that's great, but We're suspicious if this report...
