REWARDING ICHIRO
No one is a bigger fan of Ichiro Suzuki than I. That's why this story is appealing to me.
According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Miami Marlins not only like Ichrio, they love him... and respect him, and want to bring him back. Man... can you imagine if the Yankees did that? Hell, Ichi would be a helluva lot better in the outfield of Yankee Stadium's right field than Carlos Beltran. Whatever the case, I liked reading this:
"Suzuki has played way more than the Marlins envisioned (136 games, 393 plate appearances), though he has just a .601 OPS.
However, Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill told me: 'We are very pleased with the job he’s done for us. Who would’ve thought at the beginning of the season that he’d lead our team in games played? It speaks to the number of injuries we’ve had. Anyway, we will wait until the season ends, but I anticipate us trying to bring him back.'”
And let's not forget, Ichiro currently has 2933 hits, and is aiming toward 3000. The Yankees were fools to not try and capitalize on another award ceremony at Yankee stadium by holding onto Ichiro for 2 years and trying to grab that extra merchandising opportunity, but whatever the case, the Marlins are most likely gonna do it, and good for them.
Ichiro deserves everything good that comes his way. He's a fierce competitor and a great ball player and I just really appreciate the guy out there every game. And to think... he's practically 42. Amazing.
