TRADER VS. TRAITOR: JACOBY ELLSBURY

It is absolutely fair to call Brian Cashman a “TRADER”. You can also toss that moniker on Dave Dombroski, Ruben Amaro Jr. and Billy Beane. That’s part of their job description. They are General Managers in Major League Baseball and trading is a big part of what they do.

It is not accurate to refer to New York Yankee outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury as a “TRADER”, but that hasn’t stopped so many in the Red Sox Nation. It is truly staggering to look at my Twitter feed and see the countless hash tags from Boston fans that read: #TRADER. Allow me a second to communicate to my buddies up in New England in their native tongue – Kid, its nawt Tradah it's TRAITOR…ya know like Benedict Ahnold?

Dood, didn’t you go to Bahstin Latin? You musta been out that day with a wicked bad case of Chicken Pawks aw drinking retahd juice, pal.

Thanks. I really do have a love/hate with Boston. The city is great. The people are technically my sworn enemies baseball-wise, but I respect them and outside of said rivalry I have some great friends in the 617. What gets me about the Faithful Fenway Fans is their obsession with the Yankees…even in the good times.

They ARE the current World Champions. They have won 3 titles in the past decade to the Yankees 1. They are really the darlings of the Sports World in so many ways. In short, it is hardly tough to be a Sox fan these past few years. They wore those beards, called themselves Idiots, prayed at the Alter of a Bloody Sock, reversed a legendary (albeit IMAGINARY) curse and showed that Boston is truly STRONG…so why the vicious anger directed at Ellsbury? Their GM and ownership didn’t see him as a necessity to the 2014 team.

They didn’t want to pay him a big contract and THEY let him go without much of a fuss. I know it’s THE RIVALRY, and maybe if one of our homegrown Yankees went to Boston we’d be touchy, but let’s get some perspective, folks. Ellsbury coming to New York is good by me. I think the Yanks overpaid for him, but he is a really good player and I think it was more of a statement to Robinson Cano and Company than about Jacoby…just my gut talking.

I think Ellsbury will do big things in the Bronx, but guys, we didn’t take Ted Williams from you. Yaz didn’t just throw on Pinstripes and take a leak on Pesky’s Pole. We signed a solid, speedy outfielder (when we needed pitching and a big bat more). Boston, you didn’t lose that much. Count to 10! Have a few Sam Adams and pipe down…or at least get the whole TRADER vs. TRAITOR thing right.

I have said it to many of my Boston friends; this rivalry is a bit lopsided. The Yankees do see the Sox as the number 1 rival, but the Yankees are also focused on the rest of the league. When they lose they immediately retool for the next season and distance themselves from the past…NAWT THE SOX, BUDDY! Boston holds on to every single past disappointment and heartbreak they have ever experienced. They have an internal struggle with a strange inferiority complex and I don’t see why at this point.

You are not the 1986 team. Buckner (who was a great player and made error the team could have erased the next night…but didn’t) is no longer the symbol of the Red Sox Nation. It is now a triumphant David BIG PAPI Ortiz and the “Laser Show”, Dustin ALL HEART Pedroia. The Sox fans are like the girl who got dumped, worked out, got her hair done and now dates a better guy…but can’t be happy because she still needs her ex to notice her. Hey, it’s gonna be Okay…you’re the champs…smile…or at least put on a grin until after Christmas.

As for the Yankees, well, we have bigger fish to fry. We have bigger game to hunt. The team got better with the signing of McCann and Ellsbury, but we are a stretch from being a true contender in ’14 in my opinion. CC and Nova ain’t gonna cut the Gulden’s. We need starters. We need to KNOW DRob can close or find someone who can. We need to get Cano on board…and NOT for 200 million. And we need to be sure that we are smart when the money is spent…like knowing the difference between TRADER and TRAITOR type smart.

Good luck, Jacoby. I am sure you’ll do fine.
