YANKEES "RE-ASSIGN" PITCHING COORDINATOR NARDI CONTRERAS

A quick note from the New York Post yesterday, HERE, included a blurb that the Yankees “reassigned” minor league pitching coordinator Nardi Contreras and hired Gil Patterson in his place. With now former pitching guru Billy Connors fired, as well as Nardi Contreras being “reassigned,” the Yankees are hopefully taking steps in the right direction in terms of improving their development in starting pitchers, which is something they’ve had trouble with for years.

When Manny Banuelos had to have Tommy John surgery, I wrote about it in a post titled WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH THE YANKEES YOUNG STARTERS? It was pretty much just me ranting that the Yankees have had trouble with developing starting pitching, as guys like Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, Michael Pineda, Dellin Betances, and even Jose Campos have suffered pretty serious injury setbacks in the past. Also, I suggested that Nardi Contreras’ job to be on the line after they relived Connors, and sure enough, they “reassigned” Contreras. Now, I’m not exactly sure what “reassigned” means in this case, but the point is, the Yankees hired a new man, Gil Patterson, to fill his spot.

Now, of course hiring and firing guys guarantees nothing, but changes needed to be made nonetheless, and I’m glad the Yankees higher-ups made those changes. Hopefully some positive results follow which means being able to successfully develop homegrown starting pitching without the constant injury setbacks.
