WHY HE'LL ALWAYS BE OUR WARRIOR

Every time someone mentions Paul O’Neill, my mind instantly goes back to the 1st day of November, 2001. During what would be his final game, a World Series game, The Warrior tipped his cap to over 50,000 Yankees fans that literally stopped the game, chanting his name over and over again. One of the most memorable moments in baseball history, not because of the love and respect that fans showed a player, but because of the love and respect that #21 showed us. As he exited the field at Yankee Stadium for the last time, he was, and is, far from forgotten.

This October game was no ordinary fall day. Less than one month earlier, New York City fell victim to the first attack ever waged on American soil. The city was physically and emotionally devastated. Baseball games were cancelled for a few weeks, and people all around world watched when America’s game resumed. Frightened and battered, New York City opened its boundaries, and now, the whole world was proclaiming their love for New York. Paul O’Neill, a Yankees legend, was not only the hero of the Bronx, but now, he belonged to the world. When he left the game that day in October, it symbolized of the end of an era for New York. It was now a different time, a different city, and a different world.The Warrior isn’t knocking over water coolers in the dugout anymore. He is now announcing games on behalf of the team that made him a legend. His calm approach to announcing is very different from the passionate expressions that we were used to seeing while he played each game. Nonetheless, he grows even closer in our hearts, as he jokes about his enormous appetite, the fact that his wife hides his trophies on him, or the razzing he gets from his kids. This legend is a human being, and he never lets us down. He may be the guy that everyone likes to make fun of in the broadcast booth, but we will never forget that Paul O’Neill was no one to be reckoned with when you faced him on the field. There are not many players that could have made the seamless transition from player to broadcaster, but Paul O’Neill did, once again proving that he is a winner, whatever he chooses to do.

If I close my eyes, I can still hear it. November 1, 2001. Paul O’Neill…Paul O’Neill...Paul O’Neill... the day a legend left the field, for higher ground, but not too far away from home. Just a few rows up and away from home plate.

WHY YOU CAN'T WIN IF YOU DON'T HIT

You always know it was a shutout when you click on Yankees highlights and the first video you see are the Yankees getting off a double play to end the White Sox 9th so they can get up to bat. Unfortunately, that was really it. The Yanks were blanked and there is no way around it, once again, there's a pitcher they are not familiar with and suddenly, no Girardi binder is going to be able to save them.

You tip your hat to Philip Humber and we come back tomorrow and kick some ass. Not much more you can say it, because there isn't anything to say.

Alright wait, alittle credit goes to AJ Burnett who pitched really well. Yes, he let up 1 run, pitchers do that from time to time, but he kept the runs to a minimum so his team could get the runs back. Tonight, the Yankees didn't. It was wasted effort again by a Yankee starter, this time AJ, but kudos to him for pitching well.(photo: Getty)
2 other highlights would have to be the Gardner grab in the 6th inning... a real nice catch and to Alex Rodriguez for breaking up Humber's no-hit bid with a single going into the 7th. Seriously, that's it. Final Score tonight White Sox 2 - Yankees 0. Fans, don't get uptight, it's 1 game and Humber pitched a beaut. We simply have to move on. Tomorrow, we come out swinging... the Yankee way.

BYB EXCLUSIVE: WE WANT NICK SWISHER TO HOST SNL

You've seen it all over the Internet. WE WANT NICK SWISHER TO HOST SNL. You think to yourself "Damn, Betty White did it. Jeter did it. Hell, why can't Nick Swisher host it?" It's true, why not?

I call Swisher the Bronx Elvis because he's out there playing his heart out for the New York Yankees and their fans and when he came to the Bronx in 2009, he was immediately embraced. Think about it for a second, With all the hype of signing big fish like CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira and AJ Burnett, Nick Swisher kind of flew under the radar and when all was said and done and the Yankees had won their championship, Swish was one of the major contributors. So back to my point... Why ISN'T Nick Swisher hosting Saturday Night Live yet?

The creator of WE WANT NICK SWISHER TO HOST SNL is Beth Hucke and she's constantly rallying the troops to get this goal accomplished. I found it interesting and remarkable that Beth was able to gather so many fans of Swish together and make this campaign so popular on Facebook so fast. So, I had to interview her. Check it out:

BYB: What made you decide to start the WE WANT NICK SWISHER TO HOST SNL Campaign?

BETH: "With all the hype over the Betty White Facebook campaign, we figured why not. With his personality and enthusiasm, Swisher would be a great host. He has quickly become a fan favorite and it would just be a great show."BYB: Have you reached out to NBC's Saturday Night Live about getting Swisher on the show?

BETH: "Yes, we have reached out several times by phone, mail, email and Facebook. Our fans have been very supportive in assisting with contacting them as well. They originally told us they were looking for a page with 5000+ fans and now that we have reached that goal, so we are just waiting and having fun with the page in the meantime."

BYB: Is Nick aware of the campaign and is he apart of it in any way?

BETH: "Yes Nick is aware of the page. He tweeted about it over the fall and we have exchanged emails with his publicist. He does not actively participate on the page but we would love to have him."

BYB: Is Nick Swisher your favorite player and why?

BETH: "Nick is my favorite player. He brought life to the team during a time when it was needed. He is so personable and great to the fans, what's not to love about this guy? His outgoing personality and pure love of the game makes any Yankee fan proud to have him playing on their team. His salute to the bleacher creatures will be remembered by fans for a long long time. His charity work is great and we have that in common for some of the same causes. He is a stand-up guy and deserves nothing but great things."
BYB: There have been other Yankee members that have been on Saturday Night Live and have been amazing, Derek Jeter and George Steinbrenner, for example. What makes you think Nick Swisher would be a fan favorite?

BETH: "Nick already is a fan favorite. He is just hilarious. Between his YouTube videos and his guest appearances on other shows, he would be a natural. He does so much for the community and charity with his Swish's Wishes, he is just rounded in every way possible. "

BYB: On a personal level, have you always been a Yankees fan and growing up, who did you really like and admire as a player?

BETH: "Yes, I have always been a Yankees fan. Growing up, players like Thurman Munson and Bobby Murcer. Tino Martinez was always my favorite followed by Bernie Williams. Tino filled big shoes when taking over first and proved he was meant to be there. And Bernie, well, everyone loves Bernie."

BYB: If you could change 1 thing at the new Yankee Stadium, what would it be?

BETH: "Yankee Stadium is just the most spectacular place. To walk in for the first time is overwhelming and a memory I will cherish forever but if there was one thing I could change, it would be the ticket prices so they are affordable to the everyday family."

BYB: If there was 1 person you'd want to pie on the the Yankees, who would it be?

BETH: "The one person I would like to see hit with the pie would be Jorge Posada. For a few reasons. One, just because of the hype in the media about tension between him and AJ. Two, because Jorge is wound so tight, his reaction would be priceless."

BYB: How many Yankee games do you intend to go to this season?

BETH: "I have already been to 1 this season but usually only go a few times a year. That goes back to ticket prices... unless of course Swish would like to have us as his guests for a game."

BYB: Do you read Bleeding Yankee Blue and if so, how'd you get started reading it?

BETH: "Yes of course I read Bleeding Yankee Blue. Facebook has brought a lot of us Yankee fans together in a productive positive way. We all help each other out and promote each other. Bottom line - Bleeding Yankee Blue is an awesome site and we love having your support."(photo: Beth Hucke left)

WHY BEATING BALTIMORE IS SWEET

The Yankees beat the Orioles in both of the games they played them in and that just means that we stick it to Showalter pretty good right now. Let's hope he's at home starring in the mirror thinking, "My God, all I did was make Jeter and the Yankees mad. DAMN IT!"(photo: Getty)
Jeter, the Captain was 4 for 6 today. Remember when he was finished? Remember when every newspaper "sports" guy had him on his last leg? "Too old" and the slumping is "just the beginning of the end." Damn, I hate that. Hey look, this is Derek Jeter... you let him work and he'll work. Get off his ass, he's adjusting and hitting and everything's going to be ok in Yankeeland. What can you say about Freddy Garcia, huh? The Chief looked dominant again. 6 innings, and gave up only 2 hits when he came out of the ballgame. It was clear to me with our bullpen coming in that he was about to get his 2nd win. It didn't work out that way today though. Freddy got a No Decision which is kind of a waste and sucks, but it's baseball. Look, we can rank on the Orioles all day long, but they really are a decent hitting ball club. So, they got to Joba and they got to Mariano and you have to move on. (photo: AP)
But, and don't crucify me for saying this, because Mo is probably one of my favorite players of all time, did you notice Mo wasn't hitting his spots today. He just didn't look comfortable to me. I can't put my finger on it. After he let up that walk, I knew it was an extra inning game. It's a gut thing. Something is off. Look, tomorrow Mo could come out and just mow them down 1,2,3 and everything will be fine. But I can't help but wonder if something is bothering Mariano. Who knows, maybe it's me being overprotective. Am I the only one who feels this way? Look, Andrew Marchand put this piece out HERE and brings up a good point. He says that Mo has blown more saves in April in his career than you may think. Interesting. But you have to think that maybe Mo is overworked. I brought up that point in WHY WE CAN'T TIRE THE THREE HEADED MONSTER. Let me know what you think.

The best part of the game to me besides Garcia today was Robinson Cano. After the game resumed, Cano smacked a double to left and stole third. It was heads up. Russell Martin knocked him in to put us ahead of the O's and then from there, Jeter and then Granderson to follow, helped to extend the lead for the Yanks.

Just saying... I love my Yankees.

Final Score today, Yankees 6 - Orioles 3 and the Yankees take the Series again. Yes, it's true, the first game was rained out, but we did play 2 and we did win them both, so yes, to me, it's the Series. Damn, I love that.

Next game is tomorrow night against the Chicago White Sox. Let's hope AJ Burnett gets win number4. It would be the right thing to do.

WHY WE RETALIATE THE YANKEE WAY

Russell showed Muscle...2 times. And how is he rewarded? By taking 1 between the numbers.

Look, I don't care what's been said or written. Buck Showalter's track record leads me to believe that the plunking of Russell Martin last night was called from the bench. No doubt. To me, that's Bush League. If the Orioles' didn't want to be the victims of 5 home runs last night, perhaps their pitchers shouldn't have been grooving fastballs over the middle of the plate.

Now, the talk in the booth between Michael Kay and Ken Singleton was truly comical suggesting may or maybe not a retaliation was in the making. Plunking and retaliation is not the Yankee way. Let's go back to the Torre years, remember that? How many times did Pedro or Schilling or now Josh Beckett nail Jeet and Alex? How many times did the Yankees retaliate? Well, more times than not, the HBP went unanswered. I remember leading the call screaming "WTF?" Then I go back to an interview with Torre where he said something about stooping down to their level isn't the Yankee way. How correct is he? The way I see it, the Yankee way isn't Bush League. We're better than that!

Now, Joe Girardi is smart and when the time is right they'll get theirs, but the best retaliation of all last night was watching Gardy put one in the seats. As Alec Baldwin has said, "We win. We do that a lot". That's the Yankee way!

WHY EASTER MEANS A NEW BEGINNING

Easter Sunday means a lot of things for a lot of people. To some it represents change, or a clean slate. To some, it simply represents a sign that Spring is here with warm weather and allergies. Others worship Jesus and his rising from the dead. And, still others say it represents a new beginning.(photo: Getty)
Today, nothing could be more obvious to Freddy Garcia today that is a new beginning is here, for sure. Change has come, and it's time to make a statement. Freddy Garcia, who's been struggling the past few years due to injury, is about to make his second start for the Yankees and if he really wants to get in the Yankee fans good graces, a win will win us all over today...especially on Easter Sunday. His first performance was terrific last outing, but clearly, it was a veteran performance and it showed in every pitch he threw. All that did for Yankee fans was it left us longing for more Freddy.

If Garcia was to go out today in Baltimore and pitch his heart out like he did in his first outing, to him and to many of us, it would represent a new beginning for sure. The point is confidence will come with a win today, the Yankees will rally and the fans will embrace. In other words, it's a big day for Freddy.

The Orioles will have something to prove today and don't forget, they have a decent team. But offensively, if the Yankees are patient at the plate again today, hopefully the same thing unfolds, early lead, a cushion for Garcia, and things fall into place. I'm not saying they should score 13 runs, I'm saying they need to help out our veteran today. Hopefully the big guns continue. Wouldn't that be nice.

On a small note, I just want to thank everyone who's been reading Bleeding Yankee Blue since September when it began. The loyalty is incredible. The notes are much appreciated. I wanted to take a moment and Thank you on this Easter Sunday.

Today represents a new beginning. Assignment... Keep the line moving and never look back. Let's rally the troops as we continue into the Spring and into the Summer. The New York Yankees are about the dominate the AL East and we can thank the Good Lord for that.

WHY BUCK'S ON NOTICE

Tonight's game wasn't about beating the Orioles as much as it was about beating Buck Showalter. Ever since he ticked off Yankeeland with his comments attacking our Captain, it wasn't so much about the rivalry between the evil Red Sox as much as it was beating Buck. And I mean beating Buck hard. Tonight, thanks to Alex and CC, we did that, and Mr. Showalter is officially on notice.

CC Sabathia was superb and there is no other way of putting it. He was on a mission tonight, to get win number 1 and he did. CC Monster looked like the ace we love and worship and was pitching a beautiful shutout until the 7th. Just brilliant CC, thank you. It was a terrific win tonight by the Yankees. Full Story HERE.

Talk about bats on fire tonight., holy crap! Russell Martin looked amazing, 2 more home runs and what can you say about this kid, huh? Cashman looks like a genius right now with this guy behind the dish and the bat is really working for him, isn't it? Could Martin be the diamond in the rough like Swisher was in 2009? Six RBI's for Alex Rodriguez and that Grand Slam was just a wonderful shot. The 22nd Grand Slam of his career. That's epic. It was at that moment, I looked at my son and said "Do you think he's healthy?" He just smiled back. The guy's on his way to an MVP year and we all welcome it.

Brett Gardner did something rare tonight, he hit, and not only that,he hit a double and a home run. I'd say Kevin Long got to Gardy, don't you think? It was a quote from Long that stayed with me from a few days ago. He spoke of how Gardner wasn't using his legs and lower body to drive the ball. Hmm, I'd say Gardy's driving the ball now Long. Thank you for helping.

Even Jorge hit another home run. He has 6 homers on the year... 9 hits total. There's something weird happening.

It was a rout tonight wasn't it? Look, you know tonight was just another game to some on the Yankees, but to others, it was about doing damage. You can't sit there and tell me that players on the Yankee bench weren't and aren't annoyed by Buck Showalter right now. They were and they are and they will continue to try and pummel this Orioles team as much as they can because let's face it, Buck Showalter spoke out of school and the New York Yankees will take advantage of that kind of behavior all day long and if it means coming into Buck's house to do it... so be it.

Final Score tonight, Yankees 15 - Orioles 3.

Happy Easter everyone. Freddy Garcia rises on Easter Sunday tomorrow to try to get his 2th win. 1:35pm game, weather permitting. Let's all say a prayer in church that we're able to play ball and win the series. I know I will.

WHY WE HAVE YANKEE NEWS

There are a few things going on in Yankeeland that you should know about:

• Phil Hughes:Yes, the man with no velocity is on a treatment program. It is expected that Hughes will toss 45 pitches and if he feels good, there is talk about a minor league assignment. Yes, it's true, Bleeding Yankee Blue called in in WHY HUGHES NEEDS A TIMEOUT. It just makes sense.
• Francisco Cervelli: Remember him? Yes, the kid's got a following and after his injury in Spring Training he may have been forgotten briefly but Thursday in a rehab game in Tampa, the young man went 2 for 3. Talk is Cervelli could be activated May 1st.
• Jorge Posada: Posada's not hitting, sometimes. So, what to do? He's getting work in the cage and hopefully he'll be able to overcome this "thing". In 15 games, Posada is hitless in nine. Brian Costello of the New York Post brings up the interesting point that IF Posada continues to not hit, what will the Yankees do with him? He says that unlike Jeter, who can still contribute defensively, Posada doesn't have that role because he's the DH.
• Robinson Cano: Cano is the man... the world is starting to see it and right now the guys got an 11 game hitting streak. Pete Caldera of the Bergen Record also raised an interesting stat: Cano's hit in 14 straight vs. the Baltimore Orioles, batting .446. That's 25 for 56. Not too shabby.
• Buddy Carlyle: Buddy is a minor league pitcher the Yankees signed in the off season and Buddy will swap places with Hector Noesi. Noesi will head back to Scranton Wilkes-Barre.
• Mark Teixeira: Mark has spoke out about baseball's playoff expansion and guess what? He doesn't like Bug Selig's idea of expanding the playoffs. MLB will possibly add a wild-card team to each league, bringing the total number of playoff teams to 10 each season. Says Tex: "For a team like us, I don't like it. We battle all year long in a very tough division. If you win the division and have to have five or six days off before the start of the playoffs, or you win the wild card and still have to play another one- or three-game series just to get into the playoffs, it doesn't make much sense."

WHY WE CAN'T TIRE THE THREE HEADED MONSTER

So far this season, I like what the Yankees are doing, but one thing I've noticed is Joba, RaSo and Mariano have been out of the pen a lot and its early in the season. Cause for concern? I'd say yeah. Look, it's one thing to have "the Bridge and the Sandman." It's another to over use them. We could really use some help from our starting pitching, can't we?

There is a lot to be said of the Three Headed Monster the Yanks have constructed. First off, it works and it works well. But if they come in every single game, they really aren't going to be any good to us come August. If we continue at this rate, we will wear them down and there's a possible of injury that could creep into play by August, September and the playoffs and that's really when you need these guys most. Yes, it's true, the Three Headed Monster's in a rhythm right now and I love that, but it's April. And think about this...is it possible Mariano was alittle tired after coming in 5 straight games and blowing that save in Toronto the other night? I say yes, and I'm right.

So what should we do about it? I'll tell you what I think...

It starts tonight with CC. Innings is the key and besides Hughes who's on the DL, the pitchers we have can easily give us 7 or 8, especially at this point. CC, for one, is amped and ready to get a win tonight in Baltimore and should, his record is ridiculously good there. But innings, innings, innings mean something now. The starters need to stretch it a bit more, take some more work load. CC should and will. AJ can as well, and after a few more starts, Colon and Garcia could give you more innings, but that's eventually.

Now, I'm not so sure Nova can yet, and he's on the radar. Over time he's going to have step it up. Nova went six in his debut and hasn't come close since. That's not too good if you think about it.

And Hughes. Hughes in 3 starts I think pitched 10 innings total. Man that stinks on ice.

The craziest part to all of this is the starters have not reached 7 innings and the only one who's the closest is Bartolo Colon who pitched 6 2/3rd's against Toronto. Don't forget, he didn't pitch in 2010. Think about that. Bottom line, It's time for our starters to go longer, they're healthy, they're capable and it's time. I mean, hopefully tonight CC will set the tone.

It's about teamwork. Sure, we could have the best bullpen in the world, but it's all for naught if we wear them down because our starters can't pitch into the 8th, in fact, it's just a big waste and we don't need that, we're too talented.

WHY SMALL & CHACON SAVED THE 2005 YANKEES

Yankees fans remember the names Shawn Chacon and Aaron Small right?

I know it's been awhile and a lot else has happened since the 2005 season, but the Yankees streak of consecutive postseason appearances was at 10 straight back then. On July 20th, the Yankees were in a dog fight with the Boston Red Sox for the division, and the Minnesota Twins for the Wild Card. The Yankees didn't have much starting pitching after Randy Johnson that season. Mike Mussina wasn't his usual self, and Jaret Wright along with Kevin Brown were injured off and on, and when they were healthy, they were rather ineffective. With that in mind, the Yankees had to make a move, or else the Yankees consecutive postseason appearances would be in major jeopardy.The first move the Yankees made was calling up journey man named Aaron Small from the minors. Small was essentially a minor league pitcher, and when he pitched in the majors he wasn't that effective. He made stops in Toronto, Florida, Oakland, Arizona, then took a few years off, then Atlanta in 2002, and in 2004 he went back to Florida. But on July 20, 2005, he made his debut with the Yankees going 5.1 innings at Texas, allowing three in an 8-4 win. And from then on, he flourished. Small pitched in 15 games for the Yankees, nine starts, compiling a perfect 10-0 record with a 3.20 ERA. But he pitched his best in September, winning five of his ten games, which includes a complete game shutout against the Oakland A's. He allowed just five hits in that outing, while striking out three and walking a pair. Small didn't really throw that hard, he just hit his spots and changed speeds. The Yankees got more than lightning in a bottle with Aaron Small.The second half of this ticket to the 2005 postseason was righthander Shawn Chacon. Chacon was in Colorado before being traded, and he wasn't that awful, at least that's what I think. He was 1-7 with a respectable 4.09 ERA. And remember, this was pre-humidor, so balls were still flying out of Coors at a rapid rate. The Yankees needed another starting pitcher, so they gave up now current Giants' reliever Ramon Ramirez and Edwardo Sierra. And like small, Chacon flourished. He went 7-3 the rest of the way for the Yankees with a 2.85 ERA. Chacon really changed scenery by going to New York from Colorado, so a first impression is key. He proved he belonged as he went six innings, allowing one unearned run against the Los Angeles Angels, a team who always seemed to hit Yankee pitching no matter who is on the mound. And in his 12 starts he made, nine were quality starts. That is very impressive, considering it being late in the season when he arrived and the bullpen was taxed before the trade was made. The Yankees could really count on him every fifth day to go deep in the ball game. Chacon also pitched in the postseason for the Yankees against the Angels, going 6.1 innings, allowing two earned. The Yankees would end up winning the game 3-2 to keep their postseason hopes alive.

2005 was a great season for these two hurlers. It's a shame that they couldn't keep it going after their campaign. Aaron Small went 0-3 in three starts for the Yankees in 2006 while having a bloated 8.46 ERA. He hasn't pitched in the majors since, and at 39 years old it is a safe bet that we won't be seeing him in a major league uniform again. The same sort of thing happened to Chacon in 2006. He had a 5-3 record with a 7.00 ERA in 17 games, 11 starts. He got traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the middle of the season for Craig Wilson. Chacon finished the 2006 season in Pittsburgh and pitched through the 2007 season with the Pirates as well. But, when he went to the Houston Astros, things got ugly. In 15 starts he went 2-3 with a 5.04 ERA. But, the ugly part about his season came in June when he was pulled from the rotation and he attacked General Manager Ed Wade. He was immediately suspended, and hasn't appeared in a major league game since.

Lightning in a bottle is always a surprise, and for Yankee fans, it was a delight to have Aaron Small and Shawn Chacon in our rotation. We salute these to gamers today.
