EARLY 2020 RANKINGS LIST YANKEES AS "SECOND BEST"

Okay, I don't mind being the underdog.

Like many of you, I was pretty busy preparing for the holiday this past week. I got behind on rumors  so while my Christmas cheesecake was baking in the oven I decided to catch up on some baseball news and found an interesting perspective from ESPN HERE. A subscription to ESPN+ is needed to read the full article BUT I can give you the breakdown if you don't have access.

In a nutshell, the Yankees addition of Gerrit Cole is HUGE for the team and a massive upgrade to the rotation, but they are still ranked as second best to one team's starting rotation, the Washington Nationals. Now that Stephen Strasburg has re-signed he is stacked up with three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer and Patrick Corbin for a strong starting trio.

That's definitely a scary rotation, but nothing we didn't already know. We saw how effective their rotation was in the World Series. We also know that the Nationals have a good fourth starter in Anibal Sanchez...but what about the Yankees?

Cole is the anchor for a Yankee rotation that also features James Paxton, Masahiro Tanaka and Luis Severino. The Yankees also have J.A. Happ (for now) but his name has been a constant in the rumor mill and the Yankees would move him if they could find the right deal. They also have Domingo German, but until the outcome of his domestic violence investigation we won't know if or how he fits into the Yankees future plans. Even if the Yankees trade away Happ and German does not pitch they have other options in house including Jordan Montgomery and Jonathan Loaisiga. I like those back end of the rotation options.

The Yankees may be projected to be "second best" in baseball for now, but at least we are ahead of that other New York team who is ranked as third led by two-time Cy Young winner Jacob DeGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Marcus Stroman.

So early on the Yankees are favored with the best AL pitching staff and the Nationals are the best NL pitching staff. Fine, and ESPN can even call us "second best" if they want but we aren't done forming this team yet. Oh and, we have some nice bats to go with that starting rotation. I like our odds going into 2020 and even if ESPN doesn't think we have the best rotation I'm sure other teams out there know not to underestimate us.

A FOUR HOUR LONG MEETING WITH GERRIT COLE MEANS SOMETHING

Game changer, folks!

The Yankees met with Gerrit Cole and Stephen Strasburg yesterday, and suddenly the rumor mill has changed. Remember that whole "Cole is probably going to a west coast team" speculation? Well, not so fast....

The Yankees got on a plane and flew 6,000 miles round trip with their new pitching coach Matt Blake who I think could be intriguing to a free agent. If you don't think that is a big deal....IT IS. The Yankees aren't going to fly to California to waste their time. They went because they are serious about Cole, they wouldn't spend time traveling across country if they weren't ready to "play ball" with Cole. You also don't make that trip just to try and jack the price up for any other team in hopes that they pay a premium. Oh and one other thing to consider here.....last year was all about Patrick Corbin and Manny Machado, right? Well both of those meetings the players went to New York. The Yankees didn't travel AND the meeting with Machado lasted minutes compared to the FOUR HOUR meeting yesterday according to Jon Heyman.

Cole says he has "no West Coast bias" but that doesn't excite me. Even if he did, I doubt he would say otherwise because that would lessen his bargaining position with west coast teams. That wouldn't make sense and Scott Boras wouldn't encourage that. After all, Boras is a baseball business man and he wants the strongest bidders to stick around, right? In the end it all comes down to money. The Dodgers will have an offer, the Angels are of course interested but they just spent a ton of money so can they actually outbid the Yankees?

The Yankees have been here before and they have overcome geography concerns. Once upon a time Mike Mussina was hesitant to go from small-town Pennsylvania to the big lights in the Bronx, but it happened! CC Sabathia "preferred" the West Coast before the Yankees were able to entice him to come to New York. Did the money help? I'm sure....but I am also sure that both pitchers are glad they decided to play for the Yankees.

Money will always be a factor. Cole wants his payday, he is no different then any other player. They all want the most money they can get. We all know the Yankees HAVE the money it's just a matter if they want to spend it and ignore that luxury tax concern they have and maybe Hal Steinbrenner is willing to spend it after all, read more HERE.

I'm not getting my hopes up, but the Yankees just traveled a long distance to meet with Cole and that hasn't happened in a while. Hal just told the world that "All options are open."  I think the Yankees feel MUCH better about their chances of signing Cole. Two weeks ago they weren't favorites and now they are contenders.

This was an important meeting....and hopefully a meeting that leads to a deal. Cross your fingers everyone, this was a good sign.

THE DUMB PATRICK CORBIN ARTICLE

I hate obvious stories. I hate stories that go out because the paper needs content.  This is one of them.

World Series 2019: Patrick Corbin says he has ‘no regrets’ about shunning Yankees for Nationals

In it, Corbin talks about picking the Nationals over the Yankees, and how he's happy with his decision. Duh.

"'The big reason was to come here and make it to the World Series and win the World Series,' Corbin told reporters a day before his scheduled start Saturday in Game 4 against the Houston Astros. 'I knew the guys here were capable of doing it. It’s a great team and we’ve just put things together really well.'

OK. Now. Let's pretend the Yankees made it to the World Series.  They beat the Astros and were playing the Nationals in the World Series.  I suspect the quote from that article above would go something like this:

"'The big reason was to come here and make it to the World Series and win the World Series,' Corbin told reporters a day before his scheduled start Saturday in Game 4 against the Washington Nationals. 'I knew the guys here were capable of doing it. It’s a great team and we’ve just put things together really well.'

Stupidest content of the weekend and not even worth printing. You disappoint me NJ.com and even Patrick Corbin for that matter.

EXPERTS ARE MAKING ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT GERRIT COLE

The Yankees-Gerrit Cole connection has been around for over a decade now. This winter the story will continue. Cole is about to get a big payday. Some "experts" say he could be the first pitcher to get a $300 million deal. Will the Yankees finally get Cole in pinstripes....or will he snub the Yankees yet again?

The Yankees have wanted Cole since the 2008 draft, but he chose college instead. The Yankees tried to get him again in 2017 from the Pirates, but that trade never worked out. Now here we are heading into 2020 and the Yankees are STILL chasing him. As much as the Yankees want to sign Cole, some experts predict the Yankees are NOT the favorites.

Whether the Yankees are the favorites to sign Cole or not does not matter to me. Last winter we were the favorites to sign Manny Machado and that never happened. That word really means nothing to me. I don't buy into the hype that Cole grew up a Yankees fan so he is a perfect fit for the Yankees.  We heard the same thing about Patrick Corbin last year and that didn't end in our favor either. According to Andy Martino of SNY HERE, the "general assumption" is that the Yankees will absolutely pursue Cole, but since he is a California native he will prefer to play for a West coast team.

Take that for what you will. I don't buy that. There is one big factor here that you can't ignore....Scott Boras is Cole's agent. We all know what Boras does, and that is get the biggest and best deal for his clients and he is going to have a very busy offseason. Not only does he have a big list of free agents to find new deals for....but he also represents the top four starters on the market.

The offseason may not be here yet but Boras is already talking about deals, read more HERE. I think he is right, this winter won't be stagnant like the last two. This free agent market is just too good and you have to give credit to Boras, we may dislike him at times but the guy knows what he is doing. "Ironically the teams that have been willing to pay for starting pitching are in the World Series,” Boras said. “Clubs are going to look at that and certainly understand that is the formula that gives them the best chance to win a championship." And his pitchers are the ones playing in the World Series.

Cole is going to get his payday. The other starters represented by Boras will also get their paydays. Recent history has already shown us that nostalgia doesn't always make a decision. It didn't for Corbin, hell even Andy Pettitte left New York for Texas where he grew up but then went back to the Yankees and ended his career with us.

Money has and will continue to factor into these decisions and Boras is good at getting the most of it for his clients. If the Yankees are bidding against the Dodgers, Angels or any other west coast team for Cole so be it.
We will have to wait and see who exactly has the best package to offer, but don't count the Yankees out yet because they are on the East Coast. Only Cole and Boras knows what Cole wants.....and no matter what I guarantee he is going to be happy in the end.

THINKING AHEAD TO THE YANKEES 2020 SEASON

I wish I wasn't talking about "next season" right now, but the reality is we are. I thought about writing about "what went wrong" for us but the fact of the matter is it will only make me more frustrated and I know I am not alone. We already know what went wrong, so let's talk about what the Yankees can do to improve this team for 2020.

1. Get serious about starting pitching

The Yankees didn't aggressively pursue last season's big free agents, and they should not take the same approach this winter. We need top of the rotation pitchers. Look at the Astros and the Nationals, both teams are stacked with pitching and one will be a champion soon.

We didn't sign Patrick Corbin and while I don't regret that fact is he is pitching on a team playing in the World Series. If we did sign him we would've had a stronger rotation. The Yankees need to invest in pitching this winter and they have a long list to choose from that is ten times better than what was available last season. The Yankees need to spend some money here. There are a lot of interesting names here that would be a good addition to the rotation. Can the Yankees sign Gerrit Cole? He is going to be the shiny present every team wants and we have all seen why. Even if the Yankees don't sign him there are plenty of other names out there. Pick more than one and get it done. Pitching wins games and championships.

2. What happens to the bullpen?

Who stays and who goes? Dellin Betances was all set to cash in on a nice deal as a free agent this winter, but thanks to his lost season he won't get anywhere close to the payday he was hoping for. He will pitch for someone in 2020 but the question is will it be for the Yankees? Should it be for the Yankees? And Aroldis Chapman is another arm to consider because he can opt out of his contract. Chapman's last pitch wasn't the happy ending that the Yankees wanted but it still doesn't take away from the fact that he ended the year with 37 saves and a 2.21 ERA in 60 appearances this season. He has been one of baseball's most reliable relievers with 273 saves and a 2.23 career ERA so there is a possibility of opting out for more money. Of course, the Yankees could also tweak his deal to give him more to stay too. The bullpen was a strength for the Yankees this season, so hopefully the Yankees can build upon that.

3. Make some tough decisions

There are more than a dozen players to watch this winter, according to NJ.com HERE, some of these guys may not have a future with the Yankees. A couple names caught my eye.

Domingo German. We really haven't heard much since it was announced a month ago that he was placed on administrative leave under Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy. NJ.com said he needed "a change of scenery." I don't know if that is what I would call it but the Yankees will have to weigh the pros and cons on a very difficult and sensitive situation here. Do they bring back the pitcher who carried the team most of the year with a 18-4 record or do they cut ties?

And what about Didi Gregorius? He's become a fan favorite but can they sign him back? NJ.com says he may be too expensive. I don't necessarily agree. Many teams are set at shortstop so he may not have a big market and he did miss a lot of time this season.

Should the Yankees bring back Brett Gardner? Now that the Yankees are without CC Sabathia his veteran leadership may be invaluable. If the Yankees can bring him back on a one-year deal is there a good enough reason that they shouldn't?

Finally, Greg Bird and Miguel Andujar may not fit the Yankees future plans anymore. I have never been a big Greg Bird fan. I think he has talent, but his constant injury history just makes him expendable. It is sad to see Andujar have a lost season after a brilliant 2018 which earned him runner-up Rookie of the Year. Has Gio Urshela stolen his spot with his better defensive skills and his improved offense this season? It's amazing what a difference a year can make.

There is a lot to consider going into the winter. One thing that doesn't sit right with me is the fact that the Yankees have just finished a decade without an appearance at the World Series. This isn't the history we want to make. Yankee brass needs to make some adjustments here because we can't let that continue.

A VERY EARLY LOOK AT THE YANKEES BIGGEST NEED

Pitching, of course.

Summer is coming to an end soon. Labor Day has come and gone. Pumpkin spice is everywhere. A co-worker of mine from Montana said her hometown got their first dusting of snow yesterday, it will be the first in a VERY long fall and winter season. So soon the postseason will be here and then it will be gone. Hopefully it ends with a Yankees championship but no matter what free agency will be here soon after.

So I am already looking at potential Yankee targets. The Yankees need more starters and we all know this. Question is, did Yankee brass learn a valuable lesson after not signing Patrick Corbin? Time will tell. Lucky for us, there is a pretty good free agent market to look forward to.

1. Jake Odorizzi

The Yankees checked in on Odorizzi in the past but after 8 years in the majors he's had a breakout year. Odorizzi made his first All-Star team this year and has a 3.60 ERA through 147.1 innings. He will be thirty in march and could get a big contract if he ends the second half strong, and does well in the postseason. He could be a good middle of the order guy for the Yankees.

2. Zack Wheeler

I really don't want to even think about this name but...the Yankees were tied to him just before the trade deadline read more HERE. He hasn't handled pressure well in Queens and it seems questionable that the Mets would even extend a qualifying offer according to reports before the trade deadline. I don't see Wheeler as an upgrade but maybe the Yankees see some potential there somewhere. I'd be okay passing.

3. Hyun-Jin Ryu

Ryu has spent all 6 years of his MLB career with the Dodgers. He has a crazy 2.45 ERA which as good as that is, his ERA was lower earlier in the season. He's stumbled recently and even had one bad outing against the Yankees. He has the talent, but this is his first season pitching more than 150 innings since 2014 and at 32 years old his injury history is something to consider. Thankfully none of his injuries have involved his arm or his shoulder. The Yankees should be cautious when considering contract length if they want to make a run at him. 

4. Madison Bumgarner

No secret here, the Yankees have been connected to Bumgarner for a long time. We know what he is capable of. We know what he can do in the postseason and that experience is invaluable. That could be a huge asset to the Yankees for years to come if he stays healthy and consistent. Those are big "IFs" but any team will give him consideration this season. Question is how interested are the Yankees and how interested should they be?

5. Stephen Strasburg

This could be a bit of a wild card but rumor is Strasburg is considering an opt-out of his contract after this season, read more HERE. He could opt out for more leverage in getting a bigger deal, we've seen that before. The 16-6 record and 3.50 ERA could help bring him a bigger payday. 

6. Gerrit Cole

The Yankees have been chasing Cole since they drafted him back in 2008. His 16-5, 2.73 ERA and 281 strikeout this season make him a priority for every major league team, especially the Yankees. He's an ace on a stacked Astros rotation and would definitely be the same for the Yankees. He's durable, he's dominant and going to get a big payday. Hopefully it is the Yankees that finally get him they've been chasing after him forever. I love the idea of him in a Yankees uniform.

The Yankees passed on Patrick Corbin over the winter, but with a more attractive free agent class coming this winter I doubt they pass on pitching again. Who would you like to see the Yankees sign?

FREE AGENCY IS FOR THE BIRDS

Times are definitely changing. Not long ago players looked forward to the day they became a free agent, especially if you were an "elite" player. Elite players look forward to those elite contracts with the extra years and extra dollars. Or should I say looked forward to? The last two winters have shown us that free agency isn't the same anymore.

Do players even embrace the idea of free agency anymore? Seriously, the last two winters have been miserable. Here we are one week into spring training and there are still 45 major league players without a job. But the 45 unsigned players isn't the only glaring problem in baseball. What about the 77 players that signed one-year deals? They will once again have to go through the undesirable free agency process in hopes to find a job. The number of one-year deals is concerning.

Several teams have all but given up on signing free agents. There are 10 teams out there who have not signed a free agent for at least a $6 million this winter. So far, Patrick Corbin and Manny Machado are the only real winners in free agency, and Machado just signed! A "generational" talent didn't get signed until after spring training started. Are we really supposed to believe Rob Manfred when he says baseball free agency isn't broken and it doesn't need to be fixed? Come on!

I think Manfred's blatant denial of the issue has only made it worse. Now we have guys out there like J.D. Martinez who have recently been through this frustrating process calling free agency "embarrassing," read that HERE. Martinez has been in both Machado and Bryce Harper's shoes, but he signed for MUCH less money that Machado did. He got a five-year $110 million deal that was much less than what he was predicted to get heading into free agency. His contract does include opt out options after years two, three and four but based on current trends there's no incentive for him to do that. There are ZERO guarantees he would get more money. Free agency definitely go according to his plan, so maybe players are taking notice.

Why would a player want t be a free agent now? I wouldn't. So are contract extensions the way to go? It certainly looks like it.

The Yankees are jumping on the extension bandwagon. On Monday the Yankees announced an extension with Aaron Hicks for seven years, $70 million. The deal keeps Hicks signed through 2025 with a team option for 2026. Now he won't have to worry about what will happen to him at the end of the season when his contract expired.

The same can be said for Luis Severino. He signed a four-year $40 million extension two weeks ago. That sounds like a much better deal than his alternative scenario. He was just minutes away from an arbitration hearing where he was likely to get just north of $5 million for a one year deal. The Yankees dangled a carrot in front of him that was eight times that amount and that's all it took. If he performs to his potential he'll be worth more than that $40 million.

So what's next for the Yankees? Rumor has it the Yankees are working on extensions now with Dellin Betances and Didi Gregorius, read more HERE. If that's the case, the Yankees will be making smart moves to keep their young core in tact and these guys will have a guaranteed contract and a chance to win a championship without the stress of free agency.

When baseball has guys like Harper, a veteran starter like Dallas Keuchel and an elite closer like Craig Kimbrel are still without jobs there is a problem that needs to be fixed. I don't know if Manfred is blind or just delusional....but this is broken. No one wants to be a free agent anymore. It's too risky. It frustrates the fans which in fact is bad for baseball.

COLLUSION IN BASEBALL?

No, I am not talking about the conspiracy between President Trump and Russia. We breathe baseball here, not politics. That being said, does collusion exist in baseball?

There are WAY too many free agents still on the market right now. Spring training is here and there are far too many big names out there still with no job. Thankfully J.A. Happ isn't one of those names and he was smart to sign in December, but you can still hear some of his frustration:

"It’s surprising and it’s disappointing. I know we're [the Players Association] working on ways to change this, but it's frustrating for sure to see all the quality guys out there that can help teams win not being signed this close to spring. It's a bummer," read more HERE.

Last winter was slow, but it also didn't have the same star studded power as this free agent class, so many didn't expect another slow market. Big names like Bryce Harper and Manny Machado usually create a slower market for others until they sign but....they both still don't have jobs. How can two young guys with infinite talent still be on the market? This wouldn't even be possible three years ago.

And what about Dallas Keuchel, a Cy Young Award winner three years ago? There's no reason why he does not have a job. Or Craig Kimbrel, who led the NL in saves for four straight seasons and was the closer for the defending World Champion Boston Red Sox who is the best reliever on the market. Adam Jones does not have a job, nor does Mike Moustakas or Gio Gonzalez.

How about Doug Fister or Marwin Gonzalez? I mean, Gonzalez is extremely versatile. Teams salivate over a guy they can plug in multiple positions. You can't convince me that a guy with his versatility doesn't fit on one of the 30 MLB teams. I'm not buying that one.

There are approximately 70 experienced free agents still unsigned with Opening Day less than two months away. Quite a few of these players would be major game changers to a team, especially contending teams like the Red Sox who haven't addressed their bullpen and the guy that helped them win their championship. Side note, I am VERY okay with not seeing Kimbrel pitch against the Yankees.

So should fans and players be mad at the owners? It's easy to say that owners are trying to be strategic with how they are spending their money and don't want to sign those big money long term deals. They are in it to make money, but fans are in it to see their favorite players. Without their favorite players there is no reason to buy the expensive jerseys, MLB extra inning packages, game tickets or outrageously priced beers at those games.

Long term and big money deals do have a bad stigma attached to them. We tend to remember the bad deals like Bobby Bonilla, Jason Bay, Jacoby Ellsbury and Alex Rodriguez and understandably so. I know I can't wait to get rid of Ellsbury.

But not all long term deals are remembered as a disaster. I'd say CC Sabathia's seven year deal was a good investment. He's been reliable and it helped us get an immediate championship. Oh and Derek Jeter's 10 year deal back in 2000 was one of the best investments any team could make.

More than half of Major League teams haven't signed a free agent this winter. That's a startling number. So far, the only player to get a payday of over $100 million is Patrick Corbin. Many teams (like the Yankees) CAN afford guys like Harper or Machado, but yet they have chosen not to. Are MLB owners behind this?

I love baseball, but it's not easy to make it here. Yeah, there is a potential to make BIG money here.....but it's a long road to get there and maybe it is scaring some guys off. Maybe guys like Kyler Murray who just chose the NFL over baseball (read more HERE) are more interested in the guaranteed money than a gamble in MLB free agency. At this point, can you blame them?

So who is to blame for these last slow winters? Are players just greedy and have they ruined free agency....or are MLB owners colluding to change the game? It makes me wonder if a salary cap is the only thing to get baseball back on track.

MANNY MACHADO MANIA!

Yesterday was Wednesday. Normally not a big deal right? Well, when the Yankees have a meeting scheduled with one of the biggest names in baseball Wednesday isn't just Wednesday.....it's all hell breaks loose day! It's also rumors go flying day! Take a deep breath though....

Yes, Manny Machado met with the Yankees yesterday. After much anticipation and crazy social media debates it has finally come and gone. Next up Machado gets to visit the Phillies. If you were waiting for any tidbits on potential offers well, I hate to burst your bubble (or maybe I don't). This is only just the beginning.

All day yesterday was filled with nothing but Machado rumors. If there is any truth to the visit it was fast, read that HERE. Now if that is true and the meeting was only 90 minutes long....big deal. As far as I am concerned, it means nothing. Nada. Zilch. Yesterday's news. Some people think it is a big deal though.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the length of the meeting matters. It could've been three hours and I wouldn't feel any clearer about the probability of Machado in a Yankee uniform. At the end of the day, this is a long drawn out love affair between the Yankees and Machado whether fans like it or not.

Both sides have a mutual interest so the duration of the meeting doesn't mean anything. A longer meeting doesn't mean more interest. Both sides know what they want and are feeling each other out to see if a match can be made. Machado and the Yankees have been talking for a long time already, this is just another part of the process. That's all it is.

This is different then the meeting with Patrick Corbin. Sure, Corbin wanted to be a Yankee too, the same fascination was there. The difference here is Corbin was coming off of one really good year, who wasn't expecting the same contract as Machado and isn't a premier pitcher. Machado is one of the biggest names in the game who also has shown all of baseball some character flaws. 

So now we sit and wait to find out what happens next, but I think the short meeting has some people in a panic. We've been writing about Machado constantly for months now. You may like him and want him on the team and you may not but there has been a lot of talk about backup plans to Machado in the last week especially. The first name to be pitched was Freddy Galvis HERE who is obviously not nearly as exciting.

But now Marwin Gonzalez is an alternative candidate. Some people really like him, he certainly was a difference maker for the Houston Astros last season. I guess no matter how I feel about Machado it is hard to really call anyone a possible alternative. There's just no one else with his skill set....

But is Gonzalez really a name to consider? Is he better than Galvis?

I don't know that I can call him "better" than Galvis but I would not argue that he is a worse player. He may be slightly overrated though. He is versatile so he has a great deal of value for a league-average bat and good defense. He has some pop to offer, but really his best year was 2017 when he won the World Series. It would be nice to have a guy that can play every infield position and even left field to platoon with Brett Gardner when needed, but his versatility is the best part of his skills.

It never hurts to explore options, but if the Yankees can't sign Machado and Gonzalez is the best alternative I think his future with us would be at second base, not shortstop. Out of all four infield positions that he can play, he's had the least amount of time at shortstop and he's progressively getting worse defensively. Using Gonzalez at shortstop makes that side of the infield even weaker. If this is the route the Yankees chose I would hope they would move Gleyber Torres to shortstop and put Gonzalez at second.

I'm ready to finally get this Machado soap opera over with. Is Machado the answer to the Yankees problems? Some fans say yes. If Machado doesn't sign is there another good solution? There's a solution out there but you can't compare that to Machado. It just doesn't work. That is the only thing I am convinced of at this point.

Oh, one other thing that I am convinced of.....no matter what there is no "right" answer for the Manny Machado dilemma. It causes too many Twitter wars! Wake me up when it's all over.
