BO BICHETTE TO THE YANKEES? COME ON, MAN!

Some of these baseball trade proposals are so far out there, it feels like writers are spending more time in a fantasy league than the real world. Case in point: Nick Prasad over at Last Word on Sports decided to shake up the offseason boredom with a blockbuster idea that has the Yankees trading for—wait for it—Bo Bichette. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love a good hot stove debate, but this one? It’s like something cooked up after three espressos and a nap in the Trade Machine.

Here’s Prasad’s pitch: “Bichette would be a good investment on the infield and in the lineup, especially if he can maintain health. How do we get him to the Bronx? A packaged deal would include a main infielder such as (Anthony) Volpe or (Oswaldo) Cabrera and a prospect.”

Oh, Nick. God love ya.

Let’s break this down. Bichette, a two-time All-Star, has been a cornerstone for the Blue Jays, but he’s coming off a 2024 season that saw his offense take a nosedive. Sure, a change of scenery might help him rebound in the final year of his current contract, but are we really talking about this? Volpe, the Yankees’ golden boy, a Gold Glove winner, and Mr. 60-RBI-a-year, is not exactly someone you toss into a trade willy-nilly. Cabrera, while more of a Swiss Army knife for the Yankees, also brings value with his versatility.

And if the Yankees were a video game, wouldn't it be cool for the Yankees infield to have Bichette at short, Volpe sliding over to second, and Jazz Chisholm at third. “Currently, Anthony Volpe is a hot topic,” Prasad notes. “This may be a key piece for the Yankees to possibly either move over to second base or trade. Why move to second base? To make room for a veteran trade.”

Man, there's a lot going on there to wrap my head around.

Oh, Nick. My guy. A Jazz-Bichette-Volpe infield is certainly fun to dream about, but the reality check is hitting like a 100-mph Gerrit Cole fastball. First, let’s acknowledge the Yankees’ attachment to Volpe, who is more or less the future of the franchise. Second, trading for Bichette and giving up key young pieces feels like swapping a fully charged phone for a battery pack on 10%. And third—well, who’s trading Jazz Chisholm anytime soon? What is happening?

Here’s the thing: Personally, I love this idea but I don't truly see it.  Full disclosure, I adore the Bichette family. Here at Bleeding Yankee Blue, we’ve had some lovely chats with Bo’s mom Mariana (read MOTHER'S DAY WITH THE BICHETTES) and Dante Bichette Jr, and there’s a bond there. But even with all that goodwill, this trade idea is, shall we say, a little far-fetched.

Nick, I get it—the offseason is fun, and we’re all trying to spice things up. But this one? It’s a trade proposal straight out of the multiverse. Thanks for the entertainment, though. You’ve definitely given us something to talk about—and laugh about—until spring training rolls around.

GIRARDI & BICHETTE EXCHANGE TEXTS

Girardi: "D. What's up pal" 

Bichette: " Hey Joe. How is everything." 

Girardi: "we're good. hows the family doing?"

Bichette: "we're good. tough break on Chili huh? I didn't him taking the job in Boston"

Girardi: "Yeah. I thought we offered him a nice opportunity in New York."

Bichette: "and what happened to Magadan?"

Girardi: "Funny you should say that. Hey you wanna get dinner? You. me... Brian Cashman?"

Bichette: "Oh no, you're crazy! Mariana is going to kill you!"

Girardi: "What? What did I do?"

Bichette: "I know what you're doing joe. lol.  Im home this season. I wanna work with Dante and Bo alittle before I even think about getting back in the game."

Girardi: "You got the wrong idea. A nice dinner with Cash. A steak, maybe a glass of red. We just want to see what you're thinking!"

Bichette: "Joe, you know me, I love you like a brother. But i'm home for now"

Girardi: "Remember those days in Colorado? We had a pretty great time."

Bichette: "Yup. the best."

Girardi: "we had the best time and we were the leaders of that club. Gotta get the flame back. Gotta get the band back together."

Bichette: "I KNEW IT. you're killing me Joe. KILLING ME

Girardi: "All I'm asking is you sit down at the table with me and Cashman. Mariana is of course invited.  In fact, I'll bring my wife as well. It will be like old times"

Bichette: "Except cashman's there offering me a job! dont get on Marianas bad side, she will literally kick your ass."

Girardi: "Lets have a dialog and then if nothing pans out, we keep it like this and at chritsmas Uncle Joe brings your family some nice gifts. lol"

Bichette: "Just dinner. No promises."

Girardi: "No promises... but we need a hitting coach and I'm the one who asked the Yanks to pass on Magadan.  Dont make me look bad."

Bichette: "Oh your bad dude. I'm going to get heat for this. tell me when and where. TALK ONLY

Girardi: "OK. Ill text you later."

Bichette: "Oh boy."

I'M NOT SURE POSADA OR BICHETTE WANT TO GIVE UP FAMILY YET

 ...and that's a good thing!

It’s easy for us writers and fans to just name drop to try and fix the hole of the Yankees hitting coach spot.  We have it all figured out, don't we?  Kevin Long’s fired, read KEVIN LONG WILL SPEND MORE TIME AT HOME... HE'S FIRED, and suddenly, we know what to do.  "Tino Martinez" someone would yell.  "Paul O’Neill" says another.  I’m on board with Jorge Posada.  And I even suggested Dante Bichette Sr. on Twitter the other day.

It’s not a command, it’s an idea, an idea I didn’t invent and Mariana Bichette was sure to remind me she was watching my Tweets on Twitter.  Besides, it was Dante's choice to walk away from the Rockies in 2013 to work more with this sons.  Something I can get on board with. That's a family man at work. I kind of like that! You can read about that HERE. But it's not exactly coming from left field. Anyway...

Truth be told, we all have our favorites, but in the retirement world, being with family, watching kids grow up… it’s easier for us to make the suggestions than for the former stars to do the job.  We as fans need to put that in perspective... much like what Dante was doing with his boys. More on that in a moment.

Break it down… someone mentioned Paul O’Neill for the Yankees hitting coach job, and what a great idea it is, but here’s the reality… and this is me speculating; I think Paulie likes being home in Ohio and I think that he likes broadcasting a handful of games and getting back home to the family.  In short, I don’t think he’s ready to be the Yankees full time hitting coach.

Jorge Posada would be the ideal choice if I were in charge. He’s a former catcher, he understands the game better than many and has an excellent rapport with the players.  Plus, he’s got clout and stature and many would look up to this guy, young, as well as our veterans.  To me, it makes sense.

To Laura Posada and the kids, I’m not so sure that’s where he’s at yet in their lives right now… and I get it.  I remember speaking to Laura and asking about if Jorge got the call, what would happen.  Here was her answer:

"I have always supported him in his baseball career and I think it would be his decision.  In life, you need to be content with your choices and if he feels ready then let's play ball!"

Love the support and gotta love the Posada family.

If I had to guess though, right now it’s Laura’s time to shine and Jorge is enjoying the home life… so let him enjoy it.

Back to Dante.  Dante Bichette I feel may be in the same boat.  Dante is loved by the baseball community and very close to the Girardi family.  Dante Jr. calls Girardi "Uncle Joe" for crying out loud.  If I had to close my eyes and visualize the 2 of them. Joe and Sr. in the Yankee dugout, it fits.

I see the guy helping this club perform, but in reality, Dante Jr is working his way up the Yankee ladder and Bo is doing his own thing too, striving to improve their skills.  Is the timing just wrong on this for Dante Sr? I say perhaps.  Hey Mariana… don’t yell at me!

There have been reports that the Yankees are interested in Chili Davis who is the Oakland A’s hitting coach.  As you know, Chili was a former Yankee, he’s well liked in the baseball community as well as in New York. Comcast Sportsnet writes: “...Hitting coach Chili Davis’ name is being linked to the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs in media reports from each of those cities. All three teams are looking to fill hitting coach vacancies.

An A’s official said no team has sought permission yet to interview Davis, who just completed his third season with Oakland and is still under contract..."

Whether or not the Yankees will interview David remains to be seen, but it makes a heck of a lot of sense.

I’ll tell you who I do think would be the best choice at this point, and it’s someone that’s been hanging around the Yankees a lot lately in the background… it’s Tino Martinez.  Look, the guy was just honored and he isn’t broadcasting with YES or anything.  Plus, he’s loved in New York.

He also has the experience in Miami, although some of the Marlins seemed alittle soft after allegations of harassment and verbal abuse from Tino.  Look, I just know what was reported and I can’t delve into something I don’t know.  I do know this; If Tino was asked to be the Yankees new hitting coach, I think many in the Yankee community would embrace it.  This is just me thinking out loud.

Look, I think it’s way too early to nail down a hitting coach, but it’s true that the Yankees have to get organized sooner rather than later after a 2nd year of a failed playoff spot.  I gave you the names and my thoughts about each.  In the end, for many of these men, family is a major factor.  Bad timing is the other.  It will all work out in the end, but I do find the name dropping very interesting lately…

MOTHERS KNOW BEST

Mother knows best.

When "you know what" hits the fan, it's your mother that has the solution. If your mother gets sick or has a cold, your dad has no idea what the sports schedule is for the kids, what birthday parties are happening and how to make dinner. In other words, it's mass chaos.  Dad's are good for some things, but mothers complete the family and handle the heavy load.

I am lucky enough to have a terrific mom. This is a photo of her above as a little girl and trust me, she had an amazing mother as well. My mom has always been in my life and is always there to give me advice, even now.  I'm a mama's boy and have no problem saying that.  It's important, especially with my own family.

Here's a picture of my wife above.  She comes from a strong line of mothers before her. Her mom's a tough cookie and provides important values in her children and her mother before her did the same.  I'm happy to say that I have a wife that is a terrific mother and in this day and age of youth sports and a crazy school day for each of my children, my wife is there nurturing and aiding my kids in everything they need.  She's running them around town, giving them a push when they need it and still manages to make dinner at the end of the day. A mother's job is the hardest job in the world. Anyone that tells you that it's not is full of it.

There are many great mom's that I have gotten to know over the past few years. Mom's that are inspirational and nurturing in their families lives.  I always tip my cap to Marci Hensley, Ty Hensley's mom (Read THANKSGIVING WITH THE HENSLEYS), Laura Posada, Amber Sabathia, Kim Austin and Mariana Bichette (Read MOTHER'S DAY WITH THE BICHETTES.) 

Real nice, lovely women, members of the Yankee family and important role models in their children's lives.  These women do it all in life, yet, at the same time, they still manage to guide their children to do the right thing, to shoot for the stars and to try and be the best through hard work. 

Look at Tyler Austin, Ty Hensley and Dante Bichette Jr for instance.  Still plugging away and working hard to make the bigs in pinstripes one day.  They learned the importance of hard work and dedication... not only from their father, but because their mother was there too... for a shoulder to cry on, to talk about their frustrations... and then, they got back out there and worked alittle more.

Look at how important Amber Sabathia (Read CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR: INTERVIEW WITH THE SABATHIAS) and Laura Posada (Read THE FULL POSADA INTERVIEW) are, not only to their families, but for individuals like you and me. 

They push to the limit and offer an inspiration and drive so passionate, it not only resonates with their families, it rubs off on us as well.  They are all truly terrific people... they are also mothers.  Mothers who believe in their children. It's nice to see. 

Today is gorgeous in the Northeast, and if you live in New York where I am, you know that it's almost symbolic, especially after such a brutal winter.  Today is an important day.  Do the right thing, make that call, get some beautiful flowers. Make a trek and go see mom today.  After all, she raised you, she inspired you and she has always been there for you.  Again, I can't thank my mother enough for being the driving force in my life for so many years. It's very important to me and your mom should be to you too.

Today is Mother's day.  Sure, act like it's just another holiday, but this one is significant. If you are here on this earth, you have a mother. Thank her today for being there.  Thank her for all the good she has done for you. Thank her for guiding you, loving you and being there if you've ever reached a dark hour in your life.  When "you know what" hits the fan, it's your mother that has the solution. Always.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: TYLER AUSTIN... WONDERBOY

I appreciate the Yankee farm system.  I appreciate kids who have a mission... getting to the big leagues and pushing hard to get there.  It's a life lesson as well.  You work hard, you fight for a role and you run with that role, never giving up! There should be no complacency in life. If you become complacent, someone will always pass you by and take the role that was meant for you. Hold on and never let go... that's the way you should live your life.

Enter Tyler Austin. A Yankee farm hand that I've always liked hearing about and watching play.  I've got to know Kim Austin, his mom over the past few months and I became curious about how the Austin family operates.  So when I asked Kim and Tyler to do an interview with me and they accepted, let's just say I was happy about it.

So, here it is, our interview with Tyler Austin and his mother Kim... I've nicknamed Tyler "Wonderboy", after the bat in the Natural.

Wonder... Dream... Execute and anything is possible. I know Tyler will be doing some pretty great things in the Bigs one day soon... so, we asked them all about getting to where he is today... it starts at home you know...

BYB: Tyler, let's start with the Thunder. Who are the guys you find yourself closest with on Trenton's club and why?

Tyler Austin: There is really not any 1 player that I’ve latched onto because we are all very close as an organization.  We all are real tight.  We genuinely care about each other, so I can't say one guy or another.

BYB: Kim, when did you know that Tyler enjoyed the game of baseball? What was it that convinced you? 

Kim Austin: Tyler played baseball as young as 4 years old. We could see that he had athletic promise. For instance, he was riding a 2 wheel bike at 3.  He made All-Star teams starting at 4.  He kept asking to play.  Eventually, he played year round and wanted to learn.  At home he would hit balls off the tee for hours. You could just see it. 

BYB: Tyler, have you ever been star struck by a baseball player? Who was it and why were you star struck? 

Tyler Austin: My All-time favorite player is Derek Jeter and I got to meet him in Spring Training.  I idolized him since I was a little boy and patterned my life on and off the field after Mr. Jeter.  I went to shake his hand and finally got to meet him and I couldn’t even get his name out because I was so nervous.

BYB: So I guess I know the answer to this one: Who do you admire on the Yankees right now and why?  

Tyler Austin: Derek Jeter is the one I admired since I was small for sure.  I want to take in any advice he would offer me.  It would be an honor for me just to be on the same field with him and to share the clubhouse with a man such as he.

BYB: Kim, where were you when Tyler collected his first hit for the Trenton Thunder?

Kim Austin: Oh man, we were home! It was last year in the playoffs. We’re superstitious my husband and I and we don’t listen or watch, so we were looking at Twitter feeds and that’s when we found out.  It was really exciting!

BYB: Well then Kim, here’s a follow up at that.  Will you be at Yankee Stadium when he makes his debut there? Especially because you're superstitious and all... 

Kim Austin: Oh yeah. Of course. That’s the big show so we will go to Yankee stadium.

BYB: Describe the scene when Tyler was drafted in the 2010 amateur draft. Where were you guys and was the Yankees the team he wanted to go to? Take us through that journey that day.

Kim Austin: We were watching on the computer. Day 2 is not televised. Tyler was projected high in the draft. The rounds kept coming and going and I was feeling sick to my stomach and I was heartbroken for him because his name just wasn’t coming. He was nervous and finally he said, “I’m leaving.”  My husband and I kept watching and we were having a conversation when Tyler’s name was finally called. They called “Christopher Austin” and we weren’t sure if we heard it correctly. Then we realized and were shocked!  Tears were rolling down my face and we called him and I said “Tyler, you’re a Yankee.”  That day was exciting. It was a big party. 

BYB: Tyler, you can have dinner with 3 baseball players living or deceased.  Who would they be and what would be the 1 question you would ask each of them?

Tyler Austin: Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris would be 2 for sure. I would ask them each how things were physically and mentally during the race to break Babe Ruth's record in 1961.  My third pick would have to be Derek Jeter. I would ask him how difficult is it to be the Captain, the face of the Yankees and being one of the Core 4.

BYB: Tyler, do you collect baseball cards?  

Tyler Austin: I have collected cards and some memorabilia. I am a big Georgia Tech and Yankee fan. I was never that guy who would go out and seek an autograph though.  

BYB: My son plays Little League all year round. He's a lefty. He's developed a habit where he pulls everything, and I mean everything down the 1st base line and usually always foul.  If you’re his coach, what are you telling him to do to adjust to hit up the middle? 

Tyler Austin: I would advise him to shift his hands and always think left center.

BYB: Kim, how did you keep Tyler focused on hard work and believing in himself as a kid on the baseball diamond? Explain to the audience the parallels between baseball and life.

Kim Austin: We have taught our children that hard work is key. To be successful, you need to be positive and you have to work at everything you do. We taught that you have to have a good work ethic. You have to have confidence and the “want” to accomplish something.  If you’re not happy in your job, it’s going to reflect. We wanted them to put forth the effort to be excellent and that goes for all three of my boys.  

They didn’t play with trucks and Legos growing up, they played baseball, but it was something that they loved. When you have passion, it’s not work. Believe in yourself, and then everything can be accomplished.

BYB: Tyler, what do you tell kids who want to quit Little League after a frustrating at bat, or season?

Tyler Austin: Hang in there.  I’ve had frustrating seasons and I’ve played a year ahead. Those years, my numbers went down, everything seemed to. I struggled and I realized that I needed to work alittle harder and I can’t get down on myself.  



I like to watch the Legend of Bagger Vance. In it, there’s an important lesson:  Everybody has their own authentic swing. Once you find yours, there is nothing you can’t accomplish.

BYB: Do you read Bleeding Yankee Blue? If so, what do you think?  

Kim Austin: I’ve enjoyed it and I’ve read the interviews with Dante and Mariana Bichette, Marci and Ty Hensley, and I recently read the post about the Gifts to Mariano Rivera, but I read the interviews. The honest truth is I was given good advice by someone in baseball who told me NOT to read.  So... I try not to read a lot. 

BYB: Tyler, anything else you’d like to say to BYB and our readers?

Tyler Austin: Thank you for allowing me and my mom to do this interview with Bleeding Yankee Blue!  It has been our pleasure to do it!

MOTHERS MAKE THE WORLD GO 'ROUND

It's never easy being a mother.  It's the hardest job in the world.  My mother did an incredible job with my brother and I and I know she did because my head's on straight.  I saw how she cared for us, worked, but still managed to help us with our homework, bring us to little league, cook dinner, read us a story and put us to bed and it started all over the next day. That went on for 18 years and then, once in a while when I came home from college and crashed on the couch... it happened some more. Bottom line, she never stopped and yet, she never seemed tired.

To this day I call my mother almost every single day. My calls are selfish and I never really realized it until right now.  I mostly bitch about my own life, my own stress and my own family, which probably isn't fair, but my mother never complains because she's my mom.  Plus, she probably understands that both my wife and I are going through the same type of stuff she did when I was a kid.  It's a vicious cycle and it will happen again when my kids reach my age... and so on... and so on... and so on.

But as I think about all my mother has done, I think about wife and all she does too.  She's a pretty incredible woman.  She's my kids biggest fan.  She fights hard to make sure they know their worth. She is always cooking up snacks and lunches and dinners and shuttling them off to little league or swimming or soccer.  She hosts my kids friends, cleans up the messes, yells, hugs, and yells some more. She's even there helping them with homework, a job I can't stand to do because I have no patience for the "new math". That's an inside joke for all you parents who know the math I'm talking about. Talk about frustrating... but that's another post for another day. In short... she's the driving force in my house and when she has a cold or needs a break, or is sick in bed, the whole "house operation" breaks down. Why? Because a dad can't do what a mom does.

The point is, my wife is pretty damn amazing.  She probably doesn't hear it enough from my children who think that video games and play dates are more important. But over time, it will all make sense to them and they'll say it more.  My wife is a strong woman. She's always right, she never stops "doing" for our kids and she never has "her" time.  She's unselfish, but she should be selfish and so today, my kids and I have put together alittle breakfast for her. This only will come after what I hope is a long morning sleep for her. Again, she deserves that, she works too hard.  Today, Mother's Day, she needs to take it easy.  In fact, all mothers do, because if you sit and think about all a mom does, it doesn't ever compete to what an average person does in a day.  A mother's day never ends, even when it does end.  Sure, the kids go to sleep, but one of them is bound to wake up with a cold, or a nightmare, or maybe they just can't sleep.  Sure the kids get shipped off to school, but someone is bound to be in the nurse's office, or maybe they got into a fight on the playground.  Sure, she will bring them to baseball practice, but when they get hit by a pitch, it's mom that's standing on the sideline making sure they're OK.  And when your older and dealing with the stresses of your own family, she'll be there too, like my mom...  to listen, to give advice and to root you on.

I'm probably the luckiest man in the world.  Not only do I have a pretty incredible mother, but my wife is one of the best mom's ever and while my kids don't always say it, they know it.

So... to the 2 most incredible mothers I know, my mom and my wife. Enjoy today. Smile today. Relax today and know that while we may not always say "I love you", there is no doubt, we do.  It's in our phone calls, or our hugs, or our waves from second base after a big hit.  It's all the little things tied up in a bow that you see every day.  How do I know it's our "I love you?"  Because you were instrumental in getting us there, and while we may not always say it out loud, we do it and that's because you believed in us all along.

Enjoy the day and Happy Mother's Day.  Oh, and a very special Mother's Day to the many moms in Bleeding Yankee Blue's family as well.  To Erica Morales and Suzie Pinstripe, our writers, have a good day... and no writing today!

TY HENSLEY: MAKING AN IMPORTANT CAUSE REALITY

Bleeding Yankee Blue started out as a rant site that developed into something more.  It was an accident but the success is all because of the our audience who click and share over coffee or whenever there is a Yankee development.   We’ve become friendly with our audience and have communicated with the likes of Scott Brosius,Francisco Cervelli, the Posadas as well as up-and-comers Dante Bichette Jr and my son’s new found hero, Ty Hensley.  And, quick shout out by the way, we can’t forget their moms, Marci Hensley and Mariana Bichette or the great reporting by Pete Caldera of the Bergen Record and Jack Curry of YES. We're a BYB/Yankee family... whether they know it or not... and we appreciate them all.   We’ve created a product different than the others and we appreciate the feedback, the praise and the criticism… it only makes up want to improve.

Enter a kid that I’ve grown enormous respect for.  Ty Hensley. A young man with a cause and a dream.  Both will be achieved, but he’ll need the fans and people who believe in this special cause to make it work. Don’t know what I mean? Keep reading…

About a month ago Ty reached out for alittle help.  All the Hensley’s wanted from us here at BYB was to mention this important cause, a teen suicide prevention Public Service Announcement that Ty was apart of. But it was more than that, the goal was simple; Ty’s family and Be Edmond wanted to raise $40,000 for a APP to be put on all teen's phones. 

In a nutshell, it's an APP that would work as a crisis hotline, meaning, if a teen needed help, if a teen needed to talk, that APP was right at their fingertips and they could reach out and talk to a specialist right away.  I found the cause to be important and promised I would help get the word out. After all, I have kids, many of you do and sometimes being a parent can be a tricky thing. Wouldn't it be reassuring to know that there was extra help out there if your son or daughter needed it? That's why this cause is so important.

Since then, The Hensleys, BYB, Yankee fans and some celebrities like Kristin Chenoweth also tweeted our story (HERE) about Ty's cause and all we ask is that if you believe in helping kids, DONATE.  That's it.  Share this story, make people aware.  That's it.  It's about Suicide Prevention and it's important.  And if you’re not sure how to Donate, I’ll make it easy, CLICK HERE and make a donation. Bottom line, we want more people to Retweet this.  We want more people to donate.  We want more celebrities and sports writers to jump in and make people aware of this important cause. 

Look, there are a lot of causes in this world. I’m happy to help promote many of them, but this one hits home.  Again, many of us have kids. Many of us want our kids to succeed and many of us don’t want them to ever feel the pressures of failure or bullying.  They need to cope, they need to continue trying and they can’t worry about failure.  Ironically, failure makes you stronger, at least that’s how I’ve always tried to explain it to my children.

Look, Ty Hensley’s trying to make a difference here.  He could have done it as an established New York Yankee 4 years down the line.  He’s not.  He’s doing it now because he understands the importance of wearing the pinstripes and what it means and how celebrity can bring awareness to this very, very important cause.  So think about it.

Ty has made a very adult decision for a kid trying to climb the ladder and follow his dream.  All he wants is for others to feel like they can do it too.  It’s not only very adult, it’s brave and noble… you really have to give this kid credit.   Truth be told, I’m proud to help out any way I can when it comes to the Hensleys... and that's the truth.
