ADAM WARREN'S BACK... AGAIN!

No big surprise here other than the Yankees are taking a guy that had Tommy John surgery and are going to rehab him back to health like they did Jon Lieber years before.  Yup... Adam Warren is back for his third stint in the Bronx.

Thomas Harrigan from MLB wrote this about it:

"The Yankees agreed to a two-year Minor League deal with reliever Adam Warren, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand on Monday."

There's really nothing more to it.  He's back. If he's healthy, he'll pitch... when he's ready.

EOVALDI HEADS TO A YANKEE RIVAL!

I'm not sure how I feel about this, but I gotta report it.  I mean damn... first my buddy Ty Hensley gets signed by the Tampa Bay Rays, now Nathan Eovaldi!

That's right Eovaldi just signed with the Rays! It's official now... 2 year deal!  Randy Miller of NJ.com writes this:

"If Nathan Eovaldi returns to his 2015 form after recovering from last August's Tommy John surgery, the Yankees may come to regret giving up on the right-handed starter...

 Eovaldi agreed Sunday to a one-year, $2-million contract with a club option for 2018 with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Eovaldi is expected to be spend the entire 2017 season on the disabled list rehabbing and be ready to pitch again the following campaign."

Teams do this with injured guys sometimes just to see if they have anything left in the tank, and especially if it's a cheaper type deal.  You guys remember the Yankees did it with Jon Lieber a while back and he was effective for a bit for New York.  Teams take chances and to be honest, I'd do the same thing with Eovaldi... he was good for the Yanks!

At any rate, I just wanted to keep you in the loop on this one.

WHAT WOULD THE MARLINS WANT FOR JOSE FERNANDEZ?

Not that there's a single connection right now between the New York Yankees and the Marlins, but I was very intrigued to see a nugget about the Marlins and their young ace Jose Fernandez. And when I saw the rumor that perhaps the Marlins were shopping him, pardon me for salivating...

Growing sentiment around Baseball and internally with the @marlins is Jose Fernandez will be traded this offseason.

Yup, it's Craig Mish of Sirus XM, and I have news for you... the idea would be amazing... if it was actually true. I don't believe it.

For one, there is no growing sentiment around baseball around Fernandez... at all.  The wording is nice and yes, when I read it initially, I thought "Wow, could the Yankees do something big here and get this kid?" He would do wonders for our rotation.  No doubt, the Marlins would want a King's ransom for him and so, I then started to come back to reality and do some digging.

That's when I found this:

Two highly placed sources tell me Jose Fernandez is not being shopped or discussed to be shopped. Will that changes, who knows? #Marlins

That's Joe Frisaro of MLB.com and he's right... you NEVER know, but it appears to not be true. For all we know, and I believe this is right... the Marlins could have floated that story out there before the Winter Meetings to hopefully get some nice offers when they walk into those Meetings just to see if he's worth moving.

Now, one word of caution about Fernandez, and this comes from Hardball Talk:

"Jose Fernandez, who was then rehabbing from Tommy John surgery but who would soon be coming back to the Marlins’ rotation."

And so you'd have a guy fresh off Tommy John if the Yankees DID trade for him, and would we want that?  Well, we've done it before, hello Jon Lieber.  But the difference is Fernandez is no Lieber, the potential is much bigger.  Fernandez went 6-1 with a 2.92  ERA in 2015.  I'd say, they'd want that.

Look, I wouldn't begin to discuss Yankee names because, let's face it, what the Marlins would want would be a lot most likely.  Of course they'd want Aaron Judge, probably Luis Severino.  I'd love to dump Ivan Nova and Brett Gardner their way, but they'd never go for it. Hell, if they did give up Fernandez, throw in Marin Prado and we'd fix second base too!

Anyway, now I ask you, the loyal BYB reader... if the Marlins called, and you were Brian Cashman, what would you do?

Word of caution with this Fernandez rumor. I'm here to tell you it's probably bull. That being said... it's fun to think about.

Oh boy... the rumor season... it'll get ya!

WAS THE ANDREW BAILEY DEAL DUMB?

I understand the struggles of staying healthy in baseball.  Sometime injury happens. Sometimes you come back and can continue on your baseball path to greatness. Other times there are setbacks, and it takes time. Sometimes you never fully recover.  As that player, you hope to just grind through it, follow your dream and keep going.  After all, that's why you're there, right? The passion of the game.

I've never been a big fan of Andrew Bailey but I do know his struggles, the grind, and I feel for him.  Bottom line, and according to Joe Girardi in Brendan Kuty's NJ.com piece, Bailey's struggling...

"...he won't pitch this season, manager Joe Girardi said, due to setbacks in his return from a major shoulder injury.

Bailey has spent the season recovering in Tampa, Fla.

In February, Bailey said he had "full expectation' that he would pitch for the Yankees this season. Girardi didn't say what kind of setbacks Bailey suffered."

Don't forget Bailey had a torn labrum and torn capsule in his shoulder. That's not easy to recover from. I hate shoulder and elbow injuries. They scare the crap out of me.

So, it was a gamble by the Yankees, and it doesn't appear that it will pay off this  time around. You just never know. Remember Jon Lieber?

The Yankees signed him and he was out with Tommy John surgery at the time of the signing.  He finally returned to baseball and gave the Yankees a great effort in 2004 going 14-8.

Bailey was signed to 1 year, $2.4 million.  Was it dumb?  Look, as a team you don't know what can and cannot happen to players.  Lieber was one example, but in the world of the unknown, there are always others...

I'm sure after Aaron Boone's shot heard 'round the world, he would have been back with the Yankees the next season. But after a knee injury on the basketball court in the off-season, Boone's days in pinstripes were over... and we got ARod. 

My point is, you just don't know what's going to happen tomorrow.  I think it was smart to make a cheap deal for Bailey and roll the dice... especially if everyone is optimistic about his recovery and eventual return.  Now however, it doesn't look too good.

Whatever the case, I will Bailey well.  I appreciate his comeback journey and I respect it.

I hope it all works out for him.

THE YANKEES ARE LOOKING CLOSELY AT THIS GUY...

Remember when the Yankees signed Jon Lieber and he was recovering from Tommy John surgery and it seemed like it took forever, but then, one day in 2004, Lieber was ready, came back and was a big help to our club going 14-8 with a 4.33 ERA. 

He was worth it.  After that, he darted off to Philly, but the experiment worked.

Since then, the Yankees have taken on similar projects.  And now, the are gonna check out closer Joel Hanrahan, who is giving a showcase after he went down with a torn flexor tendon and UCL ligament last year.

According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick:

Reliever Joel Hanrahan, 11 months removed from TJ surgery, will hold a showcase for teams next week, says a source.

Well look, on one end, it's great that the guy has worked his way back and if the Yankees like what they see, they should make an offer.  On the other end, you need to be thinking about David Robertson who is currently on the 15 day DL.  Is his job in jeopardy?

I mean, does it mean that DRob goes back to the 8th inning if the Yankees fall in love with Hanrahan? Does it mean they stockpile arms and just make Hanrahan the 8th inning guy securing DRob in the 9th inning and on that day of rest, they bring Joel in the handle it?

I mean, it was clear, the Yankees, while they won't admit it, are alittle worried about life after Mo. Shawn Kelley, who didn't pitch bad the other night, also didn't pitch great.  We will have to see what's really going through their mind in the next few weeks I guess.

Interesting story. What will the Yankees do?

THE JOBA, PINEDA & AARDSMA FILES

With all the hotness going on in Yankeeland, people tend to forget that there is plenty going on with rehabs for some of the Yankees pitching.  A lot of news has come out in the past 24 hours that you need to know about. Check it out:

Joba Chamberlain:  As we all know, Joba swore he'd be back on a mound in July and back around June 8th, he was on a mound throwing a 25 pitch bullpen session, read HERE.  Now, according to Jon Lane HERE, Joba could be on a mound facing live hitters for the first time next Tuesday. And it's been reported by Joba himself that he expects to be back after the All-Star break.  One could hope. That's damn exciting considering all the hysteria surrounding Joba and his dislocated ankle earlier this year. I guess the big question would be....who would Joba replace once he comes back? Anyway, you have to be happy about that. 

Michael Pineda: According to Lohud's Chad Jennings, doctors have informed Pineda that he can start throwing in September.  Read that HERE. Don't forget, he had his surgery on May 1st to repair his labrum.  Bryan Hoch of MLB.com also tweeted that Pineda is no longer...chubby, if you will.  Read Hoch HERE. Girardi said of Pineda: “Everything is going great. It’s good to see him not in a sling and walking around freely. He’ll go back to Tampa and just continue with his rehab. I’m not sure exactly what he’s doing. It’s a long process.”  Pineda said simply: “I’m feeling great right now. I’m feeling much better.” Hey, that's all good news and I hope to see Pineda at next year's spring training. 

 David Aardsma:  Many are rooting hard for  David Aardsma's return to the bigs.  We are continually writing about Aardsma every time the guy tweets about his progress and it’s going to be exciting to see this guy come back. Luckily it looks like he’s one step closer. 

I have been a fan of Aardsma since the San Francisco Giants.  I always liked what the guy offered and I was mildly excited when the Yankees signed him in the off season.   Why mildly? Because it's always risky when you sign already hurt guys.

Don’t get me wrong, it was like that for me when Jon Lieber signing a few years back.  You sign a guy who’s hurt, he’s part of your club rehabbing and you just hope you got a good pitcher in the end.  Lieber worked out for a bit, but sometimes it doesn’t work out.  Luckily, yesterday it was reported that Aardsma’s first rehab start was a success, read HERE. 

Aardsma pitch 1 scoreless inning for Rookie GCL and struck out 2 and walked 1. He will pitch again for  them on Saturday.  So the throwing has begun and that is a good thing.  You know, it is entirely possible that we’ll see this guy this season, down the stretch, I mean, you never know.
