CITO CULVER'S STILL GOT IT

Always been a fan of Cito Culver. I personally think the media put a ton of pressure on this guy when the Yankees drafted him, suggesting he was the "next Derek Jeter". Labels like that are just too difficult to achieve. Especially because at that point, it doesn't matter how good you become, you're not good enough. But Cito is the man and is a real good player... regardless.

But Cito's minor league career was a good one, and I love the guy. Ever since he did an interview with us here at BYB a few years ago. It was evident then, he was a good dude. (Read EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: CITO CULVER for more.)

Well, have no fear, Cito has signed a deal with the independent ball club, the Rockland Boulders out of Rockland County, NY.

NorthJersey.com writes:

"The infielder is returning to New York to play baseball, but it won't be in the Bronx or Queens. The Rockland Boulders, who play in the Can-Am League, announced the signing of Culver, 26, ahead of the 2019 season. 

Culver was the 32nd overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft, and according to the Boulders is the highest-drafted player in the history of their franchise. Culver was drafted out of high school at 18 and featured at Class A, AA, and AAA for the Yankees, most recently in 2017. 

Last year, Culver appeared for the Class AAA affiliate for the Miami Marlins before opting for free agency, the Boulders said. "

I'm pretty excited. I go up the see the Boulders a lot.  I'm gonna try and get up there this season to watch Cito play...maybe hang with him. We shall see.

Anyway... looking forward to this. I hope he does well.

CITO CULVER SNAGS THE PERFECT GIG!

If you didn't know it,  Cito Culver was still with the Yankees in their minor league system.  He was a shortstop when it all started for him and recently had become a utility man for Scranton Wilkes-Barre. But now, his career as a Yankee minor leaguer is over.  He just signed a deal with... wait for it... the Miami Marlins.

The Times-Leader writes this:

 "The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders uber-utility man, and former New York Yankees first-round selection, announced on his Instagram account on Tuesday that he had signed with the Miami Marlins. Culver joins an familiar face with the Marlins. Gary Denbo left the New York Yankees and his post as vice president of player development in October for a similar role with the Miami.

'I want to say thank you to the New York Yankees for believing in a young kid from upstate New York and giving me a chance to follow my dreams! I will forever be grateful for the opportunity they gave me,' Culver wrote. 'With that being said I’m really excited for a new chapter in my life with the Miami Marlins!!! Looking forward to the opportunity to grow with this organization. Extremely humbled to be able to continue following my dreams!! Let’s go!!!!! #miamimarlins #newchapter.'”

I have loosely known Cito since the beginning of his Yankee career and we even interviewed him here at BYB.  Read EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: CITO CULVER for more on him. We interviewed him in 2013.  No one worked harder, no one was more excited to play baseball for the Yankees... and he is such a great kid.

Bottom line, breaking into the Yankees is hard, and now Culver has a big opportunity with a rebuilding Marlins team.  It's gonna be cool for him.  I tip my cap to Jeter and company over at the Marlins on their pick up.  Nice move, Cap.

PAULIE'S NEPHEW, MICHAEL O'NEILL WAS RELEASED

There's a report coming from Pinstriped Prospects that's pretty interesting.  Turns out that Michael O'Neill may have been released by the New York Yankees.  They write that the Yankees...

"...released minor league outfielder Michael O’Neill from his contract.  The 24-year old hit .237 in 389 minor league games since being drafted in the third round of the 2013 draft.  This past season he reached as high as Double-A Trenton where he played 60 games and hit .233.  Before joining the Thunder, he hit .276 in 35 games for the Tampa Yankees in 2016."

In addition, the Yanks have re-signed Cito Culver.  He will be competing with Donovan Solano in the minors no doubt, but I'm glad at least they are holding onto Culver.

YANKEES BELIEVE JUDGE ISN'T READY...

Nice nugget from New York Daily News Mark Feinsand. 

According to Mark: "... Aaron Judge and Luis Severino were two of the most talked-about players throughout the first three weeks of spring training. Sunday, they got their walking papers.

Both blue-chip prospects were reassigned to minor-league camp, though Joe Girardi made it clear the moves had nothing to do with their play.

'We’re sending players down now that played really well,' Girardi said. 'You start to run out of innings, you start to run out of playing time, and the last thing you want for them is not to be ready for their season. If we need them during the course of the season, you want them properly prepared.'”

Interesting quote from Girardi and yes, I guess it makes sense.  You figure the Yankees have 3 expensive outfielders already, and with Chris Young as your 4th outfielder, they're not gonna stick some kid in there and pay millions for veterans to ride the bench. And so, Judge will continue working on his craft in the minors, and I believe we'll see the guy this season.  I have no doubt actually.

By the way, there were other players that got sent down too: "OF Jake Cave, INF Cito Culver, C Trent Garrison, RHP Nick Goody, C Juan Graterol, LHP James Pazos, RHP Diego Moreno and LHP Tyler Webb."

CITO CULVER DOES A GOOD BILLY IDOL

I wanted to share something with you.  Maybe this is just funny because I'm one of those guys who remembers when MTV actually started and actually played music videos. It was there that I discovered Billy Idol.

That happened in 1981.  Just to put this bit in perspective, I was born in 1971.  Cito Culver was born in 1992.  In other words... I'm old as shit.

Anyway, I stumbled across Cito Culver's individual shot for Yankees Photo day... and he pulls off a pretty impressive Billy Idol snarl.

I mean sure, it's the Billy Idol starter set, but it's pretty good... and funny. Not sure if this is his real smile or not. Who knows? Maybe he did it to give Dante Bichettte Jr a good laugh... but that's alright with me. We like Cito.

THE BABY BOMBERS UPDATE YOU NEED TO READ

It has been a couple of weeks since I last wrote about a few of our up-and-comers that are making themselves heard in the Yankees’ minor league system, so it’s time for another update on some others.  It is my hope to provide you with regular posts on the status of players that will one day take the field in the Bronx.

 Ty Hensley – In 2012 Hensley was the first round draft pick of the Yankees.  At age 18, the pitcher had a promising career in front of him and struck out 14 in 12 innings at the Rookie Level Gulf Coast League that season.

Unfortunately for Hensley, 2013 was a complete wash as he had to undergo surgery to repair a bone impingement in his right hip.  He was expected to be ready for Spring Training this season but his recovery experienced a setback when he had to undergo hernia surgery.  It is expected that he will be able to resume throwing sometime this month; possibly this week.

Keep in mind that the right-hander is still only 20-years-old, so his prospects remain bright, and he certainly hasn’t let the setback affect his attitude. BYB is pulling for him 100%.

Mason Williams- The 2010 fourth round pick by the Yankees is slowly working his way through the farm system.  Rated by Baseball America as the team’s third ranked prospect, the outfielder is blessed with great speed (rated fastest base runner in the organization) and tremendous defensive ability (ranked the top defensive outfielder in the organization). 

To this point, it would seem that the only thing holding Williams back is what he has done at the plate.  After hitting .349 as a 19-year-old at the low-A NY Penn League Staten Island Yankees in 2011, his average has steadily declined.  In 2012 he hit .298 while splitting the season between single A Charleston and A+ Tampa, and last year his average dropped to .245 (hitting just .153 over 17 games with AA Trenton).

As of this writing, Williams is hitting .193 through 34 games at Trenton.   At 22-years-old there is still plenty of time for him to turn things around at the plate.  His speed and sparkling defensive abilities make it worth the Yankees’ time to be patient while they help him work through his hitting issues.

 Cito Culver- A 21-year-old shortstop who was a first round pick in the 2010 draft, the Rochester native is a defensive star with a cannon for an arm and great speed to boot.  Like Williams, the drawback to Culver has been what he’s accomplished at the plate. 

Since 2010, Culver has slowly worked his way from the Gulf Coast league (rookie level) to the NY/Penn league (Low-A) to the South Atlantic League (A) to, most recently, the Florida State League (High A).  Through 399 minor league games, he carries a .235 batting average; though in 16 games last season at Tampa (FSL) he did hit .355 – perhaps a result of Culver giving up on hitting from the left-side of the plate (he was a switch-hitter, and in an effort to simplify things decided to solely hit right-handed).

This season he has struggled to a .203 average through 32 games.  As with both Hensley and Williams, the Yankees continue to exhibit patience with their young shortstop.  He continues to be used at both the 2^nd spot in the order and the 8^th spot in the order with Tampa – a sign that they are trying to help him find his “niche” in the lineup.

If he can finally reach his potential offensively, Culver has the tools to one day occupy the ground Derek Jeter currently calls home.

Tyler Austin- Injuries have slowed the progress of the 22-year-old outfielder through the Yankees farm system.  Until a wrist injury last season while with Double-A Trenton, Austin had hit .354 in 2011 and .322 in 2012; belting 23 home runs in 157 games across those two seasons.  

Hampered with a bad wrist, Austin’s 2013 season saw him play in just 83 games with the Thunder, and his home run total dropped to six.

This season began with promise, but he has been limited by a groin injury to just 16 games for Trenton.  He has yet to hit a home run and his average sits at .262, but in the two games since his return he has gone 3 for 9 with two runs scored while batting fifth in the lineup.  Hopefully it is a sign of good things to come for Austin.

Eric Jagielo- In 2013, the 21-year-old third baseman was the first college position player selected by the Yankees with their first pick since 2001 (John-Ford Griffin).  A graduate of the University Of Notre Dame, Jagielo is ranked fifth in the Yankees farm system by Baseball America.

Last year in 54 games the left-handed hitter slugged six home runs and hit .268 for the Gulf Coast League (rookie) Yankees and low-A Staten Island.

Already this season Jagielo has seven home runs over his first 34 games at high-A Tampa.  His average is on the low side at .244, but he hits fifth in the Yankees lineup and is blessed with an above-average arm at a position where the organization desperately needs depth. 

In only his second year of professional baseball, Jagielo is already showing the potential for a meteoric rise through the ranks of the organization.  Given the uncertainty at third base over the past few seasons, it can’t happen fast enough.

SHORTSTOP SHORTAGE & YEAH, I'M PISSED!

I know what you are thinking...."Oh great here SHE goes again" and Yes, I am about to have a moment. I don't know what else to do at this point. If I could just sneak in to Yankee headquarters somehow and just shake the members in the front office until they are dizzy I would! If I could sit them all down and have a George Steinbrenner "get it together" moment I would. Someone needs to!

So as Yankeeland knows now....Eduardo Nunez is now a thing of the past. We designated him for assignment and had 10 days to decide what we were going to do with him. In the end, we now have a new pitcher named Miguel Sulbaran, you can read up on his stats in EDUARDO NUNEZ WAS JUST TRADED. Great, nothing wrong with a little pitching right? I have never been against that......until now. I never thought I would ever disagree with this move but I disagree.....A LOT.

Look, Sulbaran has a lot of potential. I am not disappointed to have him in our system. The Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Dodgers both have reputations for developing great talent from within. We have obviously been lacking in this area for a long time so maybe this gives us the spark we have been missing. The problem is right now we have pitchers in the system. It is up to your opinion if you think they are top notch or not and that is always subjective but there is one thing that is severely lacking right now....major league ready shortstops Zelous Wheeler is in Scranton and the only real option right now for them, the Trenton Thunder infielders are just plain not ready and Cito Culver is still trying to figure things out further down in A ball. WHERE ARE THE SHORTSTOPS?!

I am not disappointed that we let Nunez go. I won't miss his errors and I just can't even imagine him as our shortstop going forward after Derek Jeter plays his last game. I wouldn't want to. As much as I agree he needed to be dealt somewhere else there is also something to be said for being strategic and setting your organization up for success. God forbid something happens to Jeter and if Brendan Ryan spends a lot of time of the disabled list there just isn't a whole lot of depth down in the minors to cover us.

In an ideal world we would have kept Nunez in AAA. I understand he wanted his release. I can't really blame him for that because no ballplayer is going to tell you that they want to be a minor league player. The problem here is there is no depth. The Yankees haven't been able to develop it and since we don't have enough of it we can't even trade for certain areas. So now....what are the Yankees going to do?! Buy it? They may have to open up the purse strings (which we have been hearing for what feels like an eternity now) that they don't want to do. Luxury taxes, less profit for the Yankees...blah, blah, blah. Excuse me while I hurl. Right now the Yankees are stuck with their backs against the wall. We have known for awhile now that Jeter would not play forever. We knew Nunez had some flaws. We should have been proactive on this. Now we are reacting and there still isn't a real solution.

I miss Gene Michael more than words can say. I mention that to some people and some nod their head and agree. Some people look at me and tell me I am pretty damn crazy. Let me ask you this though....how did you like the Yankees dynasty we had during the 90's? Do you want that again? I know I do. Gene was smart, had amazing attention to detail and knew how to help develop people. Sorry Damon Oppenheimer....but this just isn't working. Where is the accountability here? If you can't fix it then step aside.

Look, I am not upset about letting Nunez go. He wasn't a fit for us. I hope he is a good fit for the Minnesota Twins and I really wish him well. My frustration comes from the lack of development within our own system. This isn't something that can be fixed over night but in my head I imagine the front office sitting around and twittling their thumbs.

Harsh? Maybe a little but I expect better than this. If I could I would pull the Donald Trump card and pull out the old "YOU'RE FIRED" line. I pay a lot of money every year to watch these games and the Yankees get all of that money in their pocket. Like every investor I expect a return. It's time for a change and fast and my sweet demeanor is seriously running thin. I now step off of my soapbox...for now.

WHAT JETER DID FOR A GENERATION OF BALLPLAYERS

I found this fascinating and wanted to bring it to your attention. Plus, you're only going to get this information here at Bleeding Yankee Blue because it was exclusive to us in the first place.

Look, there was something that I always had in the back of my mind as I interviewed up and coming players, as well as other former Yankees that manned the position of shortstop before Derek Jeter.  I knew that one day Derek Jeter would retire.  I mean, we all did... Now that he's made his announcement, I wanted to do something different.  I went back and I looked for all those questions and answers of these players and I wanted to share them with you in one post.  It's special to me because I know just how special Derek Jeter is to them.  Many of these kids grew up wanting to play baseball all because of Derek Jeter.  Some of them have been lucky enough to play for the Yankees... and have finally met the the guy face to face.  In other words, it's come full circle for all of them.

Not to mention, guys like Roy Smalley, a solid shortstop for the Yankees and now a former player that told me he was a "Jeter fan."  How amazing is that?  Jeter has made generations of baseball players past and present love the game because they love the way Derek Jeter plays, and carries himself on and off the field.  Check this out, I think you'll really enjoy it:

BYB: Who are some of the other players you looked up to?

Dante Bichette Jr: My favorite player now is Derek Jeter. ... Of course, I like how he plays when he's on the field but I really admire his quiet confidence when he goes about his business.

BYB: Who were the guys you stuck with? What was Derek Jeter like, you being the new guy?

Juan Padilla: The clubhouse was something else, just thinking about all the great players that walk through that clubhouse game me the chills... I was surrounded by great players I watched every night on TV and now I was right there being part of the team. Derek Jeter was absolutely awesome with me. He treated me very nice and put me under his wing...

BYB: People are already calling you the next Derek Jeter.  How does that make you feel and how do you stay focused throughout the media circus? 

Cito Culver: I feel honored to even be mentioned in the same sentence as Derek. I don't think there will ever be another Derek Jeter, so it's unfair to say I am the next. BYB: Growing up, who did you idolize and why? 

Rob Segedin: I grew up a Yankees fan and started watching baseball when Derek Jeter was a rookie. He is what the Yankees are about in every aspect. The way he plays the game, the way he represents himself on and off the field. He just does everything right. It was fun to be able to watch him growing up and then be in the same locker room with him.

BYB: Tyler, have you ever been star struck by a baseball player? Who was it and why were you star struck? 

Tyler Austin: My All-time favorite player is Derek Jeter and I got to meet him in Spring Training.  I idolized him since I was a little boy and patterned my life on and off the field after Mr. Jeter.  I went to shake his hand and finally got to meet him and I couldn’t even get his name out because I was so nervous... I want to take in any advice he would offer me.  It would be an honor for me just to be on the same field with him and to share the clubhouse with a man such as he.

BYB: How was a guy like Derek Jeter in the Yankee clubhouse? Is he truly a team player?

Clay Rapada: He will go down as one of my top favorite teammates.

  
BYB: Which guy on the Yankees right now are you a "fan" of,  not just because of his playing ability, but also because they are a wonderful role model and why?

Roy Smalley: I am a huge fan of Derek Jeter.  The professionalism and talent with which he has played the game since his first season with the Yankees is example for players and fans everywhere.  When the Yankees came here to Minnesota after Derek had gotten his 3,000th hit, I made a point of visiting him in the locker room and told him that as a former shortstop and on behalf of shortstops everywhere, we are proud of what he has done and how he has gone about doing it.  That was less about 3,000 hits and everything about the example he is on the field (and off, too).

5 GUYS YANKEELAND WANTS TO SEE BIG THINGS FROM

The Yanks have a ton a great prospects.  I am fond of many of them and the talent they possess.  I often talk of Ty Hensley or Dante Bichette Jr, Tyler Austin or Mason Williams.  The list goes on and on.  I wanted to point out 5 guys I want to see make huge strides this season. Guys that are much closer than the ones I mentioned, but in fairness, they all are guys I want to see in the show real soon. Anyway, check it out:

Zoilo Almonte: The dude is 24 years old.  He’s an outfielder. During winter ball, he hit .316 with 4 home runs and 20 RBIs. He’s was quick on the base paths too stealing 6 bases. One downside…errors and he committed 4 of them in winter ball.  No, we don’t need another Eduardo Nunez when it comes to errors, but I am convinced that if Zoilo is given an opportunity with the Yankees, he will be a solid addition and future core of their club.    Last season for the Yanks, he played 34 games and had a .236 average with a home run and 3 stolen bases.  25 games in left, his primary position, 3 games in right and filled in at DH 2 times.

One thing you need to realize though; in such a crowded outfield in 2014, the best thing the Yanks can do is work him hard in the minors and bring him up in the fall.

Ronnier Mustelier: Ronnier is 29 years old and I was really hoping that we’d see big things from him in 2013. We didn’t though. Don’t forget, he had a really good spring and many fans were looking forward to seeing him again last season.  Injury held him back.  With Scranton Wilkes Barre he batted .272 with 7 home runs and 39 RBIs. Mustelier played 41 games at 3rd but played outfield as well.  It will be interesting to see if he would ever be utilized as our temporary 3rd baseman in the event that Alex Rodriguez gets suspended.  Don’t forget, we still don’t have a guy to man that spot and we haven’t signed Mark Reynolds yet.  Not sure if we will…but, this is interesting... Ronnier is not on the 40 man roster. So, there you go.

Dean Anna: I like this kid, regardless that many are just calling him a “full time minor leaguer”. Who cares, I love the guy's heart.  While with the Padres, he hit .235 in 9 games in 2013. Anna can be a decent hitter and plays the infield… 2nd base for instance.  He’s going to be a utility guy for the Yanks if he isn’t designated for assignment first.  I would absolutely love to see this guy battle through and get a spot with the team, but the odds are against him, there is no doubt about that.

But think about it; the odds were against Rudy Ruettiger too… all I’m saying is, I’d love to see this guy make things happen.

Gary Sanchez: Here we go again.  Another Yankee catching prospect that is untouchable. And you know what? I hope he is.  Gary is 21 years old and there is time for him considering Brian McCann and Francisco Cervelli will most likely be the 2 top catchers this season.  The Yankees also have Austin Romine, who is rumored to be available in a trade and JR Murphy who many Yankee fans are rooting for. In other words, there is a lot or time for Sanchez.

Last season for the Trenton Thunder he batted  in 23 games and had 92 at bats.  His average? .250.

Cito Culver: The future Derek Jeter as people have referred to him.  No pressure.  We know Culver here at Bleeding Yankee Blue and we know he doesn’t think about himself that way. In a combined Tampa and Charleston season, Culver hit .248 with 9 home runs and 34 RBIs. One danger point… 138 strikeouts.  That’s 124 in Charleston.  He’s gotta fix that.  If he can, and be more patient at the plate, he will eventually be a nice piece for the Yankees.
