BUH BYE TO CORBAN JOSEPH

Corban Joseph was alot of fun to watch, and for a short time, Joseph was a call up in 2013 and there was alot of buzz surrounding him...mostly by Suzyn Waldman. I kid... people liked what Joseph offered.  But now, something has happened.

It's being reported by Lou DiPetrio of  the YESNetwork.com, that Corban Joseph has been released.  Lou writes:

"The New York Yankees made a trio of minor-league transactions Wednesday, signing outfielder Chris Young to a minor-league deal and releasing two players - RHP Alfredo Aceves and infielder Corban Joseph - from their Triple-A contracts... 

Joseph, 25, had made his MLB debut with the Yankees last year but missed most of the season with a shoulder injury and was outrighted off the 40-man roster last winter. He remained in the organization and spent all of 2014 with the RailRiders, hitting .268 with four homers and 28 RBI in 70 games.

The RailRiders also announced one other roster move Tuesday, reinstating outfielder Adonis Garcia from the disabled list to replace Joseph on the roster."

Shoulder injuries are tough and now you have to wonder if Joseph will end up somewhere down the road. He's a talented player and he's young.  You gotta wish him well.

As you can see, Aceves was also released.  We here at BYB have always liked Aceves, but the story for me personally was Joseph.  A youngster with a tough break.  Hopefully he'll bounce back somewhere.

ACEVES GONZO

That was fast.

Aaron Gleeman of Hardball Talk writes that Afredo Aceves was designated for assignment by the Yankees. He writes that Aceves:

"...has been designated for assignment after throwing 19 innings for New York."

He also wrote this, which I thought was a tinge rotten:

"...Aceves has a 5.39 ERA in 140 innings dating back to 2012 and his reputation as a semi-crazy person probably won’t help him keep another gig."

The only time he was a "semi-crazy person" was when he was in Boston. I'm semi-crazy when I visit Boston too... not cool Gleeman! I'M KIDDING!

FALLING DOWN

Sometimes teams just roll and go on an enormous winning streak. And sometimes they don't. Sometimes there's inconsistency, losing streaks and chaos.  The Yankees are a damn good club with many, many problems.  Tonight they got killed 10-2 by the Mariners.... and in Yankeeland, fans are literally going crazy! We're roaming the streets, and by streets I mean social networks, and we're screaming mad. We're bitching, we're moaning and  we're wondering... What the hell is going on with our Yankees?

The Yankees scored 2 runs tonight. We had 9 hits leaving 5 on base all night.  We had chances, but for the love of God, why does this continue to happen with David Phelps on the mound? 

Now look, David is no saint in all of this. Phelps went 6 innings, allowed 6 hits and 6 runs.  Now, you know me, I'm not exactly on the Phelps train, but he wasn't exactly stellar.  But there is in fact more to it;  We as a club need to explode with the bats too. 

Now, on paper, Felix Hernandez beats Phelps in my eyes, but the Yankees have played well against Felix in the past. We could have handled it.  Oh and Phelps wasn't the only one giving up runs tonight.  Alfredo Aceves is totally lost lately.  We may need to put him down to AAA for a few weeks to see if we can straighten him out.  He gave up 4 more runs.  Over all, it was not a truly great performance by our pitching.   That being said, the hitters need to produce too.

The Yankees scoring went like this:

In the bottom of the 4th, Ichiro singled knocking in 2 runs, McCann and Solarte . Boom... that was it.  I mean, you can't blame Yankeeland for being upset, annoyed, pissed and angry over this game and over the way the Yankees have played most of May.  We're inconsistent.  There are no winning streaks to speak of.  There is no consistent hitting, or pitching together... it's enough to make me snap. 

Come on Yankees... get the momentum going... it's driving me crazy!

BIG FAT SPLIT: GAME 2

Game 2 goes to the Pirates today. If you ask any ballplayer how they feel about a double header, they of course want to win both, but the most common answer is usually, "There is usually a split." I don't this to be a fact, but I did hear John Sterling rambling about this today and that's what he said... so it must be true. If you could see my face right now, you see a face of sarcasm.

Anyway, in game 2, Vidal Nuno started. He went 6 giving up 3 runs.  He was followed by Alfredo Aceves who gave up another run and ended up getting the loss today and Matt Thornton who gave up the 5th run for the Bucs.

The Yankee scoring went as follows:

In the bottom of the second, John Ryan Murphy singled and knocked in Yangervis Solarte. Brendan Ryan, in for Jeter in Game 2, singled knocking in Murphy shortly after.

In the bottom of the 6th, Yangervis Solarte homered and that was all she wrote for New York.

The worst play of the game had to be Brett Gardner cranking a triple in the first, only to be thrown out by "pick off" by Chris Stewart who threw down and Gardy was too far down the line to get back in time.  The guy in back of me at the Stadium yelled, "Where the hell does he think he's freakin' going?"  That's New York for ya.

Final Game 2: Pirates 5 - Yankees 3

So yeah, while you usually split a double header, according to John Sterling... you shouldn't. You need to win both... especially if you're home, but whatever, that's baseball I guess, you never can predict it... right John?

DON'T MAKE ME ANGRY. YOU WOULDN'T LIKE ME WHEN I'M ANGRY

I'm not sure how much longer I can stay calm. The fact of the matter is the Yankees suck...and that's no joke.

The Yankees are scoring runs, this is true... but the Yankees can't keep up, and the reason is because pitching is giving up too many runs.  Now, it's not a quick fix, but it needs to be fixed, no doubt about it. 

The Yanks scored 7 again tonight, but the New York Mets are actually good this season, much like my friend Dan, a Mets fan, predicted.  He claimed, "2014 is their year." I laughed, I mean, after all, it was 2012 when he said it, but look, I will continue to laugh, because I can't see the Mets good again EVER, but tip your cap to them tonight, because they beat us again.

Vidal Nuno started for the Yankees and went 3.1 innings. I was not impressed.  In fact, I liked the guy a helluva lot more before we started to consistently use him as a starter.  To be honest, I've been down on him, David Phelps and Adam Warren for about 2 weeks now.  I want hardcore, hard nosed, passionate starters and it's clear to me, these guys are "filler" and nothing more. Sure, Warren is now relief, but the same thing applies... I am not too impressed.  Sure, be mad at me...  you can. I'm just angry these days.

Alfredo Aceves who is normally good was bad tonight giving up 4 runs himself. Yuk. I am chalking it up as a bad outing. Maybe he'll bounce back.  It's clear the Yankees want him to succeed though, they've been using him like crazy. Tonight was definitely not his night.

Some of the Yankee highlights went like this;

In the first, Mark Teixeira singled home Brett Gardner. Then Brian McCann hit a 2 run homer.  In the bottom of the 4th, Gardy knocked home Yangervis Solarte. In the 5th, Alfonso Soriano singled home Jacoby Ellsbury. 

Oh and to top it off, Joe Girardi was tossed for arguing balls and strikes after a Kelly Johnson strikeout.  Sure, he was mad, but there was theater involved here. He was trying to get his team energized. Even Joe knows you can't win on a balls and strikes call.  I give him credit though.  It didn't help, but I like that a lot.

Final: Mets 12  - Yankees 7.

2 STARTERS GOT POUNDED TODAY. ONE WAS SABATHIA

The Yankee game wasn't much to speak of today.  Neither was my kid's game.  Both CC Sabathia and my son took the mound for their teams respectfully.  Both looked different today on the mound.  Both didn't have command and both got knocked around alittle too much.  Both teams ended up losing today. Not exactly how I wanted to spend my Sunday. 

Momentum's a fascinating thing, isn't it?  If you play well, usually the rest of the team gets picked up and wants to play hard to win.  Sometimes if confidence is down, momentum never shows up. If the team senses you're alittle unsure of yourself, the team's energy is different. It's less. Hence, there's less will and determination to do anything big. Players become more complacent... and sometimes in those 9 innings, or in my son's case, 7... they just don't find that spark.

CC Sabathia went 3.2 innings today giving up 10 hits and 5 runs.  My son went 0.2 innings, allowing 4 walks, 4 hits and 5 runs. There were errors, there was a lack of energy and ultimately, there was a weird energy from both pitchers today.

Mike O'Hara, one of our BYB writers texted me as my own son was imploding and said of CC:  "He can't live at 88 mph. He looks great at times and lost at others."  Nailed it. But I was in my own hell, watching my own kid try to get himself together on the mound.   I read it as my son walked another and I felt like I was in some type of weird "Freakie Friday" Disney movie.  There was a parallel.  Both pitchers were doing the same thing at the same time. Was I on Candid Camera?

Then, more similarities...  Alfredo Aceves came in and pitched 5.1 great innings of work.  He looked like he never left the Bronx and ironically, my son's buddy Jack came in and did his own 70 pitch outing with ease. Both new pitchers tried their darn best to keep their teams in the game. Unfortunately, it was too late.  Neither team could score.  Neither team could spark a fire.  You know what?  That happens sometimes in sports. It goes back to momentum.  Bad energy sometimes doesn't always die. Unfortunately sometimes it festers. Today it did despite some terrific relief.

The Yankees only scored 1 run on 7 hits. Yangervis Solarte sacrificed scoring Mark Teixeira.  That was all.

And just to finish it off for you wonderful readers... my son's team only scored 3.  It's amazing how the world works sometimes.  These 2 teams were parallel at different levels, at the same time and had similar outcomes. It's weird, and it's unique. It's also baseball.  It's amazing to me.  You know what's also refreshing? It's only 1 game.  It's not the World Series and it's not the Little League championship... it's May.  Thank God.

We will survive.  I promise.

HERE COMES ACEVES

Well, many knew what would happen to Chris Leroux after he gave up 5 runs in the 14th inning of the Yankees loss to the Rays on Friday night, read HERE, but many didn't think it would happen so quickly.

It's been reported that the Yankees have designated Leroux for assignment.  That comes from Chad Jennings at LoHud:

Next the big question was, who's next? Well, it's Alfredo Aceves. Chad Jennings has it again.

According to MLB Trade Rumors: "Aceves had pitched well in Triple-A, striking out 14 batters and walking five in 13 2/3 innings there."

OK... well there you go! Aceves is working his way back. Welcome him and wish Leroux well.

GUESS WHO'S BACK?

I'm not gonna lie to my audience.  I'm at Happy Hour with my wife. We've never done this before, but we tried it tonight because we got a babysitter. Sometimes you need to take advantage of that!  But then... just when I thought I had the night off... I got a text from BYB writer, Rudy Laurens with some good news!

"Aceves is back on a minor league deal." 

"Really...", I said.
"Really?", my wife said. That was followed by a "You have 5 minutes." 

My wife is the best.

As the Margarita flowed, I got to my phone.  Luckily for the BYB readers... we're on top of it... mainly because we love to bring you news.

The news is this; According to Ken Davidoff of the New York Post, Alfredo Aceves is back in pinstripes signing a minor league deal with the Yanks:

The idea of having him back with us, possibly to be part of the pro team at some point is appealing to me. Granted, he had a back injury with the Yanks, and with that, he eventually signed with the Red Sox.

I said back in February 2011 in WHY LOSING ACEVES HURTS that Aceves leaving would bite us in the ass.  I was wrong, and thank God I was. Aceves also had a bad attitude with Boston.  You need to wonder if the guy just had a chip on his shoulder or if he just didn't like the organization or what.  I always liked the way he was with the Yankees. I actually thought he was pretty solid with our club and I am pretty happy the guy has come back. The only difference is he will have to work his way up the ladder again.  My prediction this time is he will be better, gathering alittle extra experience out there.  Hopefully he will be helpful.  I always liked the guy.

Welcome back Alfredo... glad to see you back with the Yanks.

2009 SEEMS LIKE A MILLION YEARS AGO

It’s no secret that I am a runner and I have often written about the work ethic correlation between training for a marathon and becoming physically fit to compete successfully in Major League Baseball.  The other morning, I jumped on the treadmill and found my eyes fixed on a metal sign from the 2009 World Series hanging across the way and I thought to myself, wow 2009 seems like a million years ago.  And in my heart, it was because so much has happened in the years since our last championship that I almost forget how it felt when we won.

Derek Jeter had a healthy ankle, Mark Teixeira was on the Mark, and AJ Burnett was stellar.  Hideki Matsui gave us the Godzilla of a lifetime, earning the series MVP and Raul Ibanez was a Phillie.  We were winners- riding high and relishing every moment of the magical ride to the Fall Classic. 

"It's a great feeling, with what these guys (the 2009 New York Yankees) did and how hard they worked. They never gave up, even when we went through some tough times, they were there. They kept fighting back. Our team has showed a lot of character." - New York Yankees Manager Joe Girardi on MLB.com.

We had Robertson, Aceves, Coke and Rivera all in action.  Hughes showed his value in the bullpen as well and Joba won a game.  We had Melky, Damon, Hairston and Molina with us- sounds like a museum exhibit.  We had energy and we had heart.  I miss having heart in the batting order.  As a student reminded me today at the university “heart is what keeps us alive as well as what allows us to connect with others.”  We have written about connection a lot here at Bleeding Yankee Blue and I guess this is what I am saying; 2009 seems like a million years ago because the connection is just so weak.  We are missing the cohesiveness that other teams seem to exemplify in more recent years.  The Tigers, Pirates, Cards, and Sox all have it.  And the Sox, who went from worst to first, have it in their leadership as well.  We just don’t have it- not in our veterans, leaders and not in our rookies.  And with Mo out and Jeter beaten down by the game, I wonder from where the connection and heart will come.

The unknown is killing me quiet frankly.  There is no heart in greed.  There is no heart in “testing the free agency market” and there is no heart in turning your back on the team that home grew you.  That last comment is for you Cano, who I straight up called a jackass this week on Twitter.

So as early November quickly turns to end of November and we are asked to reflect on thankfulness and gratitude, I thank God for making me a Yankee fan but I ask him to help them regroup and find their heart.  2009 should not be a distant memory in the archives of my brain and lost in the metal sign in my basement.  It should serve as a reminder of what we had and what we can have again if we only had heart.

ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING

Alfredo Aceves is apparently a real S.O.B. Now look, I don't know the guy, that statement is based on reports about lousy attitude and stupid backhanded comments about his teammates, like this one from the Boston Globe who basically took his quote, printed it and it's now being interpreted different ways by the Red Sox fans and his teammates.  As the Globe had it, "Aceves blamed the strike zone of umpire Hunter Wendelstedt and wondered why his teammates didn’t give him any offensive support in the 13-0 loss.  'They got hacks. Why do we not hit? Same thing. It’s just bad today. No matter what score it is, we’ve got to get back out there and give whatever we have, man,' Aceves said.

Before the game, manager John Farrell claimed he had no issue with what Aceves said. 'I don’t know if in that context Alfredo was calling out his teammates. I don’t believe he was. There was some frustration,' Farrell said." The full story is HERE.

Aceves probably meant nothing by that, but because of his past reputation as a poor teammate, it's blowing up in the media. Then, it's being revealed today that Aceves and his attitude has worn thin on Red Sox nation, and, they demoted the guy. CBSsports.com says (HERE), "Likely in light of his recent performance in addition to his ongoing attitude issue..." was the reason for the demotion. There is also talk that he will be traded by there's 1 issue, Annie Maroon of WEEI reports (HERE) that there is talk the Red Sox would get nothing for him. His trade value is low. But hey, my opinion on this is simple, if you're trying to kill a cancer in your clubhouse, you get it away from your club as fast as possible and who cares about the value. You need to stay positive.

Attitude is everything.  You talk down to a teammate, or trash talk or don't slap their ass after a great play, it all adds up.  You're a team. I tell my little leaguers that.  You have to be positive.  Sure, there are rough games, but you're in it together. You pick each other up. That's baseball.

I wish Aceves well. I enjoyed watching him with the Yankees and was sad to see him go.  I hope he gets straightened out.  I really do.

AROUND MLB RIGHT THIS MOMENT

Josh Hamilton: Free Agent Josh Hamilton wants 7 years, $175 million. That comes from the Dallas Morning News, HERE.  I cannot believe that.  I thought I read that wrong.  In this day and age, and looking at Hamilton's health every year, you really have to wonder if any team will go that big for him.  I know, he's productive at the plate, but he's not a great fielder and I wonder if he's just high balling just to get a more reasonable number or if he really thinks he's worth that.  We shall see, he's clearly one of the best free agents out there this off season.  But my goodness...

Bartolo Colon: The Oakland Athletics have signed Colon to a 1 year deal. According to the San Francisco Chronicle (Read HERE), "Colon, who will turn 40 in May, must serve the final five games of the suspension next season. Despite Colon's age and his suspension, the A's will pay him $3 million next year, and an incentives package could push the deal to between $5 million and $6 million - including provisions in the event that Colon pitches in relief."

Cody Ross: The Red Sox had exclusive rights to negotiate and possibly resign Cody Ross and, like Robert DeNiro said in Copland, they "Blew it!" According to WEEI (read HERE), Ross said "that he and the Red Sox never closed in on a potential deal leading up to the end of the period allowing the Sox exclusive negotiating rights.  'It hasn’t been really what I would say close,' said Ross. Ross said his agent, Mike Milchin, received calls from “multiple teams” after the midnight deadline expired Friday night expressing interest in the 31 year-old. It’s a dynamic that has altered Ross’ mindset heading into the rest of the off season." I'd be curious to see if the Yankees are one of those teams.

Dan Haren: According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, read HERE, the Red Sox were looking at Haren for Alfredo Aceves plus more, but now with Haren becoming a free agent, I believe the Sox will be aggressive trying to sign Haren. I'll tell you, having Haren on the Sox, a division rival, would boost their credibility a bit after their lousy 2012.  I know many of you are down on Haren, but I think he could do some damage... it's just my gut acting up.

NOVA DOMINATES; YANKEES TAKE 3 OF 4 IN FENWAY

These Yankee/Red Sox games really take a lot out of me. They’re intense, hard fought battles no matter where the teams are in the standings, and Sunday night’s game was no different. Ivan Nova picked up his 10th win of the season as the Yankees won the game, 7-3, over Jon Lester and the Sox.

Ivan Nova pitched very, very well in this one. He went a total of 6 innings, allowed just two runs (one earned) while striking out 10 and walking just a pair.

On the season, Nova is 10-3 with a 3.92 ERA to go along with a strong 3/1 K/BB ratio. Also, in his last 33 starts dating back to June 10 of last year, Nova is 22-3 with a 3.59 ERA. If that’s not good, I don’t know what is.

The offense came from many contributors as the Yankees got multi-hit games out of Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixeira, Nick Swisher, and Andruw Jones. Jones went 2-for-5 including a mammoth two-run homerun seventh. It was his 10th homer of the season and his fourth in his last three games. Robinson Cano also extended his hitting streak to 15 games as he hit a rocket off the Green Monster for a double in the ninth off Alfredo Aceves.

The Captain, Derek Jeter, had a pretty weird game. He went 3-for-5 while also committing a rather embarrassing error in the first inning. Cody Ross popped up an Ivan Nova pitch a mile high, which appeared to be the final out of the frame, but the ball hit the heel of Jeet’s glove and feel onto the grass. It also appeared that something was up with Derek’s right shoulder as he was favoring it early in the contest, but he stayed in and it didn’t seem to affect him as he collected those three hits.

This was a pretty big win for the Yanks as they now go into the All Star break with a 52-33 record, best in Major League Baseball. They have the largest division lead in MLB with a 7 game lead over Baltimore. They also have 7.5 and 9.5 game leads over Tampa and Boston, respectively, which is more important to me since those were the two teams at the beginning of the year who were supposed to be the biggest threat to the Yanks.

WHY IT WAS AN EPIC COMEBACK WIN AT FENWAY

For about the first six innings the Yankees had zero life in this game. None. They fell behind 9-0 through five innings and I would be lying if I wasn’t looking forward to Sunday’s game, hoping the Yanks would win the rubber game. But today I learned that you can never, ever, count out the New York Yankees, no matter how big of a hole they’re in.

Like I said, the Yankees looked dead. Freddy Garcia has become the new A.J Burnett or Sergio Mitre to the fans. Just about everyone’s given up on him, and with Andy Pettitte on the mend, Garcia’s clock is about to strike 12. Freddy failed to get out of the second inning as he collected just five outs while allowing five runs on seven hits. Clay Rapada followed him and allowed a run, and David Phelps allowed three in four innings of work.

The bats were also dead early on. Felix Doubront started for Boston and he was great through six innings, allowing just four hits and a Mark Teixeira solo homer in the sixth. But when Bobby V. pulled Doubront in favor of his bullpen with a 9-1 lead in hand, all hell broke loose.

In the seventh Nick Swisher hit an opposite field grand slam to start the offensive onslaught, his second homer of the series, to pull the Yankees within four runs, and everyone missed it because Phillip Humber of the White Sox was finishing off his perfect game (more on that later). When Fox tuned back to the Yankee game, Mark Teixeira was up with two runners on and the Yankees down four. And like Swisher, Tex promptly hit an opposite field homer over the Monster. Down 9-0 to start, the Yankees cut it to 9-8.

The Yanks took the lead in this epic game in the eighth when Swisher hit a 2-run double scoring Eduardo Nunez and Derek Jeter to give the Bombers a 10-9 lead off old friend Alfredo Aceves. The Yanks would then get 2-run doubles from Teixeira and Russell Martin, as well as a Jeter infield single to give the team a 15-9 lead which would be the final score. The Yankees scored 15, (fifteen!), unanswered runs to beat the Red Sox. Calling this game unbelievable is an understatement.

All in all today was an awesome day to be a baseball fan. Phillip Humber of the Chicago White Sox pitched a perfect game against the Seattle Mariners, in which Fox switched over to, so everyone could see the final three outs of his masterpiece. Good for him, and congrats. And of course, the Yankees completed an awesome, awesome comeback against the Red Sox. I thought Friday’s win was one of the better regular season wins in a while, but I think this tops it. What a game. What a sport.

Final score as noted was 15-9, Yankees. The Yanks will go for the sweep on ESPN, weather permitting, as CC Sabathia opposes Daniel Bard. Can’t wait.
