I am so tired of the media blowing up Shohei Ohtani. They are infactuated with a story about a guy in the MLB that has only played professionally here for just 4 seasons. But suddently he's better than Babe Ruth. How is that possible? That's one point.
My second point is there's a reason why Ohtani hits AND pitches. It's because when he was able to receive bids from MLB teams, it was written in his contract that this is what he will do when it plays for an MLB team.
MLB up and comers? They don't get that same treatment because once high school hits, so many of these future MLB'ers become players OR solid pitchers because their coaches (or their parents) let them become P.O.s (pitcher's only.) That usually bleeds over to college and it usually stays the same way. So, by the time they reach the pros, if they are lucky enough, their talents at the plate are usually just about gone and so they don't go back. And that's the fault of our ridiculous system.
But Ohtani, he's the phenom.
I know... you're asking me why I'm being such a dick when it comes to Ohtani, it has nothing to do with his talents or ehtnicitiy at all. It comes down to the fact that he was able to do this while plenty of other athletes in the US, black, white, asian, purple could not. Just chalk it up on him having a good agent I guess. Good for him... the guy's an absolute stud. But when it comes to overhype like the media and ESPN did last night, you really gotta give them a black eye...because in the end, the guy that was supposed to set records in this year's home run derby in Colorado couldn't get past the first round. The media has egg on their faces. Let this kid play and stop hyping him up. He too is human.
Trey Mancini was awesome last night and that's a story. A guy that no one expected made it to the finals and just an all around nice guy. You cannot beat that.
And of course Pete Alonso. He was built to hit home runs. He wasn't overthinking it... he was just pounding the baseball. Look... there are people that are great for baseball right now in this league... Ohtani, Mancini, Alonso, Soto... all these guys are great role models and it was a fun and interesting home run derby. But lets keep it real... the media has learned to blow many a story and the Ohtani one is one of them.
In the end, the choices for the Derby were great, the players themselves had terrific personalities and over all it was great to see all those fans out to watch greatness after a terrible year of COVID.... but let's keep it HERE. Let's not overhype players that can't live up to it. In other words... let these athletes play... it's so much more fun!
Congrats to Alonso and big shoutout to all the competitors in the home run derby. It's never easy... but you all made it great!
