NOW THE YANKEES ARE PLAYING WAIT & SEE WITH LEMAHIEU

Source: NJ.com

Sigh. My son gave me the ambitious news of, "Now we are in the wait and see holding pattern with DJ" on Tuesday afternoon. My week isn't getting any better. Between the Eagles throwing the game on Sunday night which closed the door on the NY Football Giants post-season hopes and all of the hawks going after a very available LeMahieu, this week is shaping up to be challenging.

According to YES Network's Jack Curry, "The Yankees have made him their priority. They have told him what the parameters would be for them bringing him back, but the Yankees are not going to bid against themselves.”

DJ LeMahieu is believed to be seeking a five-year contract worth about $110 million. Okay, that's reasonable given the value he has brought to the Yankees since coming here on a whim a couple of years ago. He is outperformed his expectations and has gone from what was intended, a utility player that likely would not play everyday to an essential member of the team, who happens to be able to play anywhere in the infield.

"The Dodgers are interested in signing LeMahieu to play third base if they don’t re-sign free agent Justin Turner, but while they’re a big-market team that probably has more money to spend this winter than the Yankees, it’s unknown if they’re willing to go five years. There has been speculation that the Yankees and LeMahieu eventually will agree to a four-year deal that includes a vesting option for a fifth year, but the Dodgers being involved could drive up the price," reported the New York Post on Tuesday.

What happens if the Yankees do not sign LeMahieu? They go after someone else who can hopefully fill the void left by a guy who has been nothing short of great since coming to the Bronx. Who can fill the shoes? I am not sure anyone really could but guys like Didi Gregorius, or Francisco Lindor are out there and that would move Gleyber Torres back to second.

The big guns have not been signed yet due in part to the times we are now living. 2020 hurt everyone in some way and baseball is one of those entities that was largely impacted. From no fans in the stands to a shortened season, baseball was not at the top of people's minds as the pandemic raged on through the summer into the fall. So wait and see is not just the game for LeMahieu, it is the game for all free agents right now. Let's hope the Yankees and LeMahieu can agree and get this deal done soon. Otherwise my sighs are going to go to tears.

  1. Can Miggy (Andjuar) play SS? He's got his doubles stroke back in winter ball. Let DJ walk. Move Torres back to 2B and put either Miggy there or sign Didi to take over at SS. Then get more SP and bullpen help. I think DJ is great, but in 2021 he's asking for too much.
