Minutes after the $324 million price tag for Gerrit Cole got claimed by the Yankees, my head went to this place: Gardy is next; well after jumping up and down for five minutes and screaming we won, if I am honest. And thankfully, my instincts were correct. Brett Gardner signed a one-year $12.5 million deal to come back and play again for the only Major League team he has every known since he signed with the Yankees 13-years-go. The walk-on Coastal Carolina University college player has had his day and the Yankees did the right thing for a guy who has always given the Bombers everything has.
"The constant that he is means a lot to the organization as well as the production on the field," assistant general manager Mike Fishman said according to ESPN. Gardner had the season of a life time in 2019 batting .251 with a career-high 28 homers and 74 RBIs. He is the Yankees' rock and number one Savage, carrying the team with his spunk, fire, speed, defense and yes, offense.
"His signature moment last season came when he banged his bat against the dugout roof after being ejected in a game in July for arguing balls and strikes, leading Aaron Boone to take off on an expletive-filled rant that prompted the Yankees manager to call his hitters "savages" in the batter's box," reported ESPN.
Gardy's contract includes a $2 million dollar signing bonus along with a $10 million option for 2021. Hard work pays off and the Yankees reap the benefits of a guy who brings so much to the field, every day. 2020 is going to be the Yankees year to shine.
