Teams like him. Teams know he's valuable and will be a helpful starter. A week ago, the Yankees could have gotten him at a nice price. Now his price is about to rise, and so now we see what happens next as Yankee fans.
Sporting News has this:
"The Phillies still appear to be interested in signing J.A. Happ. Philadelphia and the 36-year-old free agent starter continue to have “ongoing dialogue” about a potential deal, according to a report from The Athletic, which cites unidentified league sources. Happ is seeking a three-year contract, the report says."
If I'm a team like the Phillies, I make that deal. Clearly the Yanks aren't too interested and that's fair. Pete Caldera tweeted this. Notice the nugget about Happ:
Cashman indicating there’s no room on NYY for Harper. Engaged with Machado’s reps. Have spoken with Boras on lefty starter Kikuchi, who they’ve scouted “extensively” in Japan. Happ’s reps know what Yanks comfort level would be on contract parameters.— Pete Caldera (@pcaldera) December 10, 2018
That says a lot about where Cashman's head is at.
We shall see.
