GLEYBER TORRES TO START ON OPENING DAY?

Source: USA Today

There is incredible buzz around this year's MLB GM meetings...more than I can ever remember.  Part of the reason is because there are a number of free agents on the market.  Another reason is because there's no secret that Brian Cashman is shopping for a new manager for a Yankee team that is a serious contender for the Fall Classic.  And then there's our Baby Bombers, one who won the AL Rookie of the Year, another who could be trade bait and one who could be starting on opening day.

"Cashman wouldn’t rule out top Yankees prospect Gleyber Torres cracking the Opening Day starting lineup. MLB.com ranks the 20-year-old shortstop as the best player in the minors," reported NJ.com following Day 2 of the MLB GM Meetings.  There are a lot of possibilities with Torres within the infield as he can play second and third along with his first position of short stop.

“I'd say let's see what we see in the spring,” Cashman said. “I know last year, coaching staff included, was saying 'This guy is ready to go,' and we said, 'No, no, no.' He hadn't played above A-ball yet. Obviously that has changed so he is in a better position now than he was I think a year ago, but he was coming off of an injury and won't have played competitive baseball until the exhibition games start since whenever the injury happened. We'll see what it looks like," reported NJ.com.

Aaron Judge found a home in right field next to Aaron Hicks, who earned his place in center field and with Brett Gardner performing at his best holding tight to left field, that leaves one of the best outfield prospects in baseball the odd man out.  Clint Frazier is just waiting and hoping for a spot on the 2018 Yankees but it is going to be tough for him with a power outfield and Jacoby Ellsbury standing next in line.  Cashman says that Frazier is "currently blocked with the surplus we have in New York. He's part of our depth piece right now even though he's got ceiling and he's an exciting young talent."

Hoping that Ellsbury waives his no trade clause and Cashman can shop him might help Frazier, but then again, maybe not.  Anyway you slice the Yankees have depth and a mantra of "next guy in."  If someone goes down or is not performing at his best, there is always someone else waiting in the wings to swoop in and take that position.  It happened with Hicks, and it could happen with Torres as early as Opening Day.

We are waiting and watching the GM Meetings very closely guys.  Something big is about to happen...I can feel it.
