AROD IS RETIRING?

By now you have heard that the Yankees announced a press conference for tomorrow morning, Sunday at 11am with Alex Rodriguez. This is big news, on the tail of the Mark Teixeira press conference last Friday afternoon. Most of us are expecting a similar type of announcement - one where Alex announces his retirement.

That being said, the only questions about which all of us are speculating are the details of when and how and what the Yankees will do. The Yankees aren't saying much, but they did say that Brian Cashman and Joe Girardi will be available for questions during and afterward. Talk about an obvious confirmation. If he does retire at the end of this season, he'll be leaving $21M on the table.

Alex Rodriguez has been a polarizing figure with the fans in his 12 seasons with the Yankees. He survived a year-long suspension and came back to exceed expectations last year as the full-time DH. He earned two American League MVP awards in 2005 and 2007, helped us win the 2009 World Series, and will finish with a cumulative .901 OPS as a Yankee.

Everybody knows that you either love Alex or you hate him. There will be lots of tears from his die hard fans and many spiteful responses from his critics. I'll be on the side that will be thankful for his contributions during his Yankee years. Whatever happens tomorrow morning, we'll be reporting it here on BYB.
