HEROIC FINISH TO THE WALK FOR WOUNDED WARRIORS

It is rare to find someone that you can call a hero, whose work is inspiring. His immediate project is almost complete, and it will culminate with an appearance at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday May 26. Some of you may remember Richard Albero, a 65-year old retired schoolteacher and a former Naval officer who got a brilliant idea this past spring. He decided to walk from home plate at Steinbrenner field to home plate at Yankee Stadium – a journey 1200 miles long. He is doing the walk to honor his nephew Gary, who lost his life in the attacks in New York City on September 11, 2001 as well as to raise money and awareness for the Wounded Warrior Project.

As many of you know, the Wounded Warrior Project is an organization whose purpose is “To raise awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of injured service members, to help injured service members aid and assist each other, to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members.”

I wrote about this back in the spring, when he first started the walk. I said then that he inspired me, and now even more so. He has walked between 10 and 20 miles per day, as he planned to. I would check in every once in a while, happy to see that he had not given up or suffered some kind of injury that would have prevented him from completing his goal. He got it done. Now the Yankees will be welcoming him at the Stadium before Tuesday’s game.

He has been a fan of the Yankees for over 60 years, so he decided to honor one Yankee for every mile of the walk. I think it is great that he was able to connect his passion for those who serve in the military, his honoring of his nephew, and his love of the Yankees.

Finally, if you want to donate to to the cause, you can go to his gofundme project here, and you can check out his Facebook page.
