Rumor has it.....that the Yankees are reportedly retiring #2 on Sunday. I say reportedly. Of course as soon as this was leaked Twitter blew up, so who knows what the truth is yet.
All I know is I saw this tweet shortly after from MLB.com writer Bryan Hoch:
Yankees director of media relations Jason Zillo says that report of Derek Jeter uniform retirement is "inaccurate and fabricated."

Look, it's not an issue of IF the Yankees will retire Derek Jeter's number, it is WHEN. Could Zillo just be trying to cover it up? Maybe. Nothing like a blown surprise to ruin things. It would certainly attract more people to the stadium this weekend. Here is my take on it though....Mariano Rivera was the only active Yankee player to have his number retired and I think it will stay that way. Not because Jeter doesn't deserve the same accolades, but because 42 was already retired by Major League Baseball. He was the last one wearing it, why not let it go out in style not only as a tribute to Mo, but also to Jackie Robinson?
More conspiracy theory here (because that is my specialty), why not save the retirement ceremony until next year? Retire the number and make it a special day that people are going to want to make a special trip to remember? It will give us a little piece of Jeter again even when he isn't on the field. I know I would travel in to see it.
Just a little food for thought. Of course, we will stay on top of it here for you and keep you updated.
