HEY DUMMY...
I'm not a mean person and I have tremendous respect for the game of baseball and the athletes that play it. I have a hard time saying a player "sucks", because I know how hard it is to get to the pros and stay there. So when I put "Hey Dummy" in my title, it was to be provocative, and to parrot and old Careerbuilder.com commercial that you can see below:
But it was also to call out Robinson Cano who is just realizing right this moment, that maybe if the Mariners spent less money on him, they could have been able to afford to actually sprinkle alittle offense around him... you know, like the Yankees had.
Now, this is just rich. Check this out. Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com writes that Cano is now starting to "get it". His new team hasn't exactly helped him out:
"The Seattle Mariners made some big improvements this winter but appear to have left themselves with some obvious holes as well. Cano looks around and sees those very real issues and wonders if there could be a move or two more coming from the Mariners.
General manager Jack Zduriencik appears either willing to wait before diving into the next impact move or is finally and simply short of cash (two sources suggest the Mariners have little or no loot left to spend, something Zduriencik won't confirm). Before hearing Cano's very specific ideas about how to improve the team, Zduriencik observed that he's learned over the winter just how "perceptive" his new megastar is.
'I'm not going to lie. We need an extra bat, especially a right-handed bat,' Cano told CBSSports.com. 'We have many left-handed hitters. We need at least one more righty. You don't want to face a lefty pitcher with a lineup of seven left-handed hitters.'"
Perceptive or not, the Mariners need to get a return on their investment. That means Cano can't carry them on his back. He never did in New York, even though he was the best hitting Yankee last season. Cano knows what to do and how to fix it... he's not a total dummy. But my point is, aren't you asking these questions of the Mariners when you're in your big "rolling in money" meeting? Or... are you just thinking about yourself... and not the team that just signed you? Cano could look real bad if the M's don't help him out... and Cano knows this.
Oh well... not our problem anymore.
