WHY JAMIE MOYER MAKES ME FEEL OLD

As a huge fan of baseball and baseball's history I have to tip my cap to Jamie Moyer and what he accomplished last night. For those of you who may not know, at the age of 49, Moyer became the oldest player to ever win a Major League game last night. Just a remarkable feat considering all the pitchers to have ever taken the mound in MLB history.

Anyway, I thought it would be fun to take a look back at the year Moyer broke into the league (1986) and put into perspective just how long ago that was...and how incredible it is that Moyer is still pitching in 2012. And not just pitching, but pitching well! Okay, so check this out...

  • Moyer broke into the big leagues with the Cubs in 1986, before 263 major-league players last year were even born!
  • He pitched his first game before Wrigley Field installed lights.
  • Moyer's first win was in his first start, June 16th, 1986. He pitched against and beat Hall of Famer Steve Carlton.
  • Among Moyer's teammates on the Cubs in 1986 was Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg.
  • Moyer has thrown shutouts in four decades.
Impressive, right? How about this...

And to give this piece a little Yankee flavor, here is the lineup the Yankees had on June 16th, 1986 -- the same day Moyer made his debut -- Yanks vs. Red Sox: (CF)Rickey Henderson, (1B)Don Mattingly, (RF)Dave Winfield, (DH)Mike Easler, (LF)Ken Griffey (not Jr. -his dad), (3B)Mike Pagliarulo, (C)Ron Hassey, (2B)Willie Randolph (SS)Ivan DeJesus - and our starting pitcher that day, "The Louisiana Lightening", Ron Guidry! Oh, in case you are wondering, we got hammered that game by the Sox, 10-1. I'm still upset!

(yep, that's a young Jeter!)

On June 16th, 1986...
Congrats to Jamie Moyer. Thanks for making us all feel old!
