ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END

The saying for any sports team is, you win as a team, and you lose as a team. That was case and point for the New York Yankees this afternoon. Phil Hughes got rocked and the Yankee hitters let Angels starter CJ Wilson off the hook early and often as the Angels beat the Yankees today at the Stadium 7-1.

Hughes had great velocity today, but that was the only thing he had going for him. In just 3.1 innings he gave up 6 runs, all earned, and surrendered 8 hits while walking 2. Hughes was hanging his breaking stuff and the Angel hitters made him pay, especially the top of the order. Hughes never made it out of the 4th inning. In that 4th inning, already down 3-0, Howard Kendrick ended Hughes' day with a 3-run blast that made the score 6-0 and Girardi mercifully pulled him.

Although Hughes dug a big hole for the Yankees to get out of today it was our offense who left runners stranded inning after inning. It started in the bottom of the 1st. After Jeter and Swisher led off with singles to put men on 1st and 2nd you had to think, with no outs and Cano, ARod, and Teixera coming up, that a big inning was in the making. It was not to be. After Cano struck out, both Arod and Teixiera left Jeter and Swish stranded and the Yankees walked away with nothing. The Yanks also stranded runners on 2nd and 3rd in each of Wilson's last three innings and were 1-11 with RISP. So, the opportunity's were there to climb back in this game, and even win it, but Wilson was able to get the big outs when he needed. Wilson went 6 innings and only gave up 1 run and the Angels bullpen just completely shut down the Yankees in the final 3 innings, allowing 0 hits while striking out 4 Yankees.

Bottom line: It was a frustrating day for the Yankees who had won 4 in a row heading into today. Lets hope we bounce back tomorrow night and can start a new winning streak. Ivan Nova takes the mound against Angels righty Jerome Williams. The game is at 8pm tomorrow night on ESPN.

Silver Lining Notes:
  • If you are looking for a silver lining in Hughes' start today I would have to again mention his velocity was good, was throwing upwards of 93-94mph and had 6 strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
  • Jeter continues his hot April going 2-5 today.
  • Cano singled home a run in the fifth for his first RBI of the season.
  • David Phelps relieved Hughes in the 4th inning and did an excellent job. His final line is what we needed from Hughes: 5.1 innings - 1 run - 1 hit - 4 strikeouts.
