I just read this nugget from River Avenue Blues and it's pretty significant. Russell Martin apparently told reporters today that he is "still not 100% recovered from the hip injury that ended his 2010 season in August, though he hopes to catch tomorrow and is expected to be ready by Opening Day."
I don't know about you, but to me, this is ridiculous. Now it makes sense that the Yanks only signed Martin to a 1 year deal. This way, if he shits the bed halfway through the season, they have catchers like Jesus Montero and Austin Romine ready to go. But I find it disappointing that as a fan, in an already terrible off season, we signed a catcher that's not 100% healthy. Am I wrong?
Remember when Russell Martin stated he was going to be focussed for the Yanks and his last 2 years with the Dodgers he was side tracked with a bunch of "distractions"? Let's hope this guy isn't a drama queen. We don't need it.
Hopefully Martin is being overly cautious and everything is fine with his hip. If not, this is definitely not a good start.
