Nobody listens to me and I’m always right. That’s my catch-phrase. I
keep telling fans why the Yankees are worth cheering for, and the team
keeps proving me right.
But many of you aren’t listening. You aren’t hearing what I’m saying.
I still see doom and gloom from Yankee fans. On message boards, on
Facebook fan pages, on talk shows, fans are focusing on the negative.
Just stop it, already.
If you haven’t been paying attention, the Yankees have won their last
few successive series. And they have done it against teams that were
some of the best in baseball. The Tigers and Red Sox are Division
leaders. Didn’t matter, the Bombers clawed out victories.
Alfonso Soriano was recently named AL Player of the week. We told you he would be good, remember? The Yankees bolstered the offense with Mark Reynolds. He knocked a dinger in his first at bat in Pinstripes.
This team has been operating at half power all season. We reminded you about that,
too. Yet they are still in the hunt for a playoff berth. Now the team
is getting stronger. Despite the All Star Disabled List and growing
ARod mess, they are playing through it.
I know what you’re thinking; the Rays and the Red Sox are too good.
We will never catch them. Sure, because it’s not like those teams have
ever collapsed in the stretch right? Wait. Yes, they have. And our boys
just beat the Sox.
When a franchise has been through as much as the Yankees have this
season, they should have no business competing for a post-season berth.
But they are doing just that. Once again I remind you all of the outlook
given the team at the beginning of the season. Remember those days? The
team was supposed to suck right out of the gate and stay down all
season. There was even talk about this being a re-building year.
Sure there are problems. CC Sabathia has not been himself. Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain, as has been widely discussed, are a tad on
the inconsistent side. Injuries, injuries, and more injuries. Alexander Rodriguez. ‘Nuff said.
But our focus here should not be on the team’s problems, but on how
they are overcoming them. Management has plugged holes all year. Say
what you want, but there is no denying that they have done an excellent
job. Hiroki Kuroda has been solid for the most part. David Robertson is
the heir apparent to the sublime Mariano Rivera. Robinson Cano. ‘Nuff
said.
Simply put, when a team is down, they need their fans more than ever. Our job as fans is to support the Yankees.
My job as a booster is to remind fans why they should. Trust me, after
living in Toronto for ten years and seeing what those poor people get
put through by their teams, Yankee fans have it easy.
We have the pedigree. We have the wherewithal. We have the hope.
And should the team falter again, and should you lose hope in them, come back to BYB. We will pick you up and set you straight.
If you can’t hear me now, I will keep telling you until you can.
