WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT YANKS #1 PICK, TY HENSLEY

The New York Yankees had the 30th pick in last night's first round of the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft and they wasted little time announcing what they were looking for...pitching!  The Yankees selection of High School standout Ty Hensley did not shock many people but what it did do was let Yankee fans know that the organization is thinking about our pitching staff down the road.  You can never have enough young pitching talent in your organization and Ty Hensley certainly looks like a potential prospect that could one day take the mound at Yankee Stadium.  Hensley says he models his game after Roger Clemens and his mechanics like Roy Halladay.

So BYB started doing some research on Hensley's background and statistics and we wanted to bring what we found to you all...
  • Ty Hensley is a 6'5 Right-handed pitcher who is a senior at Edmond Santa Fe High School in Oklahoma.  He is also a switch hitter.
  • Hensley has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball on an athletic scholarship at the University of Mississippi this fall but, of course, now that the Yankees drafted him he may never step foot on campus.
  • Hensley posted a 10-0 record on the mound along with a 1.52 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 55.33 innings pitched this past season, leading the Wolves (30-9) to the Class 6A state semifinals.
  • He also batted .447 with 10 home runs, 41 RBI and 27 runs scored with a 1.489 OPS.
  • The right-handed hurler was named an ESPN RISE All-America first team selection
  • As a junior, Hensley posted a 6-0 record with a 2.26 ERA and struck out 58 batters in 31.0 innings of work. He allowed only 17 walks in that time

We also found some quotes from coaches and scouts about Hensley that says a lot about this kids potential...

"We're excited to get a guy with such a high ceiling,'" "He has the ideal body for a high school pitcher, as well as power stuff, and has the ability to be a high-end starter. He's demonstrated a quality makeup and has shown himself to be a hard worker, which makes him a quality pick for us." -- Yankees VP of amateur scouting Damon Oppenheimer

"Ty is a tremendously talented athlete both on the mound and at the plate," On the mound he is a power arm with a very good breaking ball. Offensively, he's a switch hitter with a tremendous amount of power. We look for him to make an impact immediately here at Ole Miss. He's one of the top players in the country." -- Ole Miss assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Carl Lafferty

“Ty Hensley is a tremendous athlete,” “I’ve competed against him for three years and he swings the bat well but he’s really going to make his mark as a pitcher. He has the size, strength and the athletic ability to be very successful in the future.” -- Tony Holt, head coach at Stillwater (Okla.).

"He's got a power arm with a power delivery,” “I had him up to 94 mph and sitting 91-92 at the Area Code Games and he used what appeared to be two different breaking balls — either a slider and a curve or a variation of one of them. He may end up in the bullpen, but I like to stay away from labeling a high school kid."  "Hensley could end up pitching in relief, but he has a shot to start long term." --  Jason A. Churchill, who covers the MLB draft for ESPN Insider

The kid certainly sounds promising.  It will be interesting to see if he decides to jump right into the Yankees farm system or head to school.  BYB will keep you posted on any news regarding Ty Hensley and, of course, the other Yankee draft choices throughout today and tomorrow.
