USA Baseball announced today that Joe Torre has been named manager of Team USA for the 2013 World Baseball Classic (WBC). Currently Major League Baseball’s Executive Vice President for Baseball Operations, Torre will be making his debut next March for the third installment of the WBC. Dates and locations are to be announced, but first-ever qualifiers are set to be held in September and November of 2012 across four international venues.
Of course, Torre is near and dear to Yankee fans. All he did was guide the Yankees to 4 World Championships, 6 American League Pennants, and 12 post season appearances! And, he was named AL Manager of the Year twice in pinstripes (1996, 1998). He currently ranks #2 in all time wins as a Yankee manager and ranks 5th in managerial wins all time in the history of MLB.
(Joe Torre, St. Louis Cardinals, 1971)
Also, many people forget what a great player Joe Torre was. He was a nine-time All-Star who played in the Major Leagues from 1960-1977, was a .297 career hitter with 252 home runs and 1,185 RBI. He was the 1971 National League Most Valuable Player as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals, batting .363 with 230 hits, 24 home runs and 137 RBI.
If you ask me, USA Baseball could not have picked a better manager to represent Team USA. Congratulations to Mr. Torre and Team USA!
