I've been anxiously waiting to see what happens in September and there's still so much to come. This tie of the year I get excited for call-ups because we all want that first glimpse of the new and upcoming Yankee talent. This season, I am equally excited for some of our injured guys to get back to the Bronx. Oh and the fact that we are getting some arms back? Even better!
Obviously, the last
SEVERINO OUTING IS HUGE. We've been waiting to get our ace back, and weren't even sure he would be back this season. It's better late than never, though. Who knows exactly what role
Luis Severino will have when he does come back, but based on
Aaron Boone's comments
HERE, it sounds like the Yankees are determined to get him back to a starting role. Teams have brought back injured arms to work shorter starting roles in the past so it could happen. Or maybe the Yankees consider another opener role and see if he can go four innings. Either way, Severino pitching for us again is a huge benefit for the Yankees.
And what about
Dellin Betances? The Yankees have had plenty of qualified arms to help fill in during his absence but him coming back would make the Yankees bullpen even deeper. His velocity was
down a little bit in a rehab start but he hasn't pitched all season. I will take the 50 pitches and call that a victory. Severino may be further along, but Betances won't be too far behind him and that makes me excited.
I'm interested to see what happens with
Jordan Montgomery. He's the forgotten name with all of these potential September additions. It would be nice to get Gumby back and just see him pitch again and it sounds like there is a good chance we might. He's made three minor-league rehab starts and allowed three runs (two earned) in 6.2 innings. He tossed 44 pitches with Trenton Thunder on Wednesday, so a Tuesday start in the opener of the Eastern League Championship Series would puts him on five days rest and let him get stretched out a little more. I just think it would be a great bonus to see him pitch this year. It gives the Yankees the chance to look at him before next season.
One name we may not see though is
Deivi Garcia. Aaron Boone was quick to shut down any rumors that Garcia may be getting a call-up, read more
HERE. He's struggled with consistency since switching to the bullpen role in Triple-A. CBSSports reported
HERE last night that Garia was headed back to the Yankees training complex in Tampa so it sounds like a call-up is not likely at this point. I guess now that Severino, Betances and even Montgomery are getting closer there's no real rush. He did go from Single A all the way to Triple A in one season and that alone is impressive.
There's a lot to be excited about. The Yankees are in first place in the division, we have young exciting talent coming up and we have some returning familiar faces that are on their way back home. I feel like this has been a LONG time coming and I can't wait. This is great momentum for us as we get closer to the end of the regular season.
