WILD CARD RACE MAKES UNLIKELY TEAMS BED FELLOWS
So, basically, we have to root for the...Red Sox. If we want to even come close to winning a Wild Card spot, we have to root for the enemy. It is sickening to even think about this concept let alone write it in this published piece. But the way it stands now, the Red Sox will win the Division as no one is going to catch them at this point. Unless they some how blow it; but with their magic number at nine as of Tuesday night, it does not seem likely.
Jack Curry uttered the words last night during YES's coverage of the Tampa Bay game. "Wild Card race makes unlikely teams bed fellows." I don't want to root for the Red Sox but I get what he is saying. We are hovering behind Toronto and Baltimore in our Division who are holding spots right now and Detroit, Houston and Seattle are ahead of us as well. I see it this way. We have so many teams ahead of us and with Tampa Bay running around playing spoiler to teams along with season ending injuries plaguing clubs like our own, anything could happen, but will it?
As the Boston Herald reported on Monday, "This is their time to seize the moment and, to be kind about it, step on the throats of their next three foes — Orioles, Rays and Yankees." That's where the Red Sox are right now and with that they have Yankee slayer, Mookie Betts who is performing at his best and could get the votes to be American League MVP.
Although we have to just keep winning, there are some things we can't control...like the teams we don't get a chance to play again. So we have to root for enemy teams including the Sox. This backwards way into the playoffs is getting way too complex for me. Not sure I can handle it much longer...and luckily, I won't really have to.
