I just wanted to share some interesting quotes from Alex Rodriguez concerning our captain, Derek Jeter. ESPN has a beautiful goodbye spread to Jeter, and ARod had the opportunity to reflect on his friendship with him.
"Derek's been a leader from day one. He's been the head of his class in every way, both on the field and in terms of character. That's a hard thing to do. Being undefeated for 20 years? In New York City? That's remarkable."
"When you realize, an hour before the game, 50,000 people are in their seats, ready to go, excited, energetic. When you see Michael Jordan and Cal Ripken, two of the biggest icons of my lifetime - I thought it was a great day. I'm sorry I wasn't there."
Now, I know what comes next. Someone will say "Who cares what he thinks?" Someone else will say something about how much they hate ARod. Let's just take a moment, shall we?
ARod and Jeter were close friends. Then something happened, things were said, and they became... less connected. It sucks to lose someone in that capacity. I'm sure ARod understands that. He respects, and admires Jeter. Not only as a player, but as a person, and a friend. And really, who among us doesn't wish they had been in attendance? ARod goes on to say that he didn't contact Jeter that day because he didn't want to be a distraction. He chose to reach out to him privately on another day, as so not to take away from the celebration. "I've made it a point to stay in the penalty box," he said.
The celebration was excellent. There were other names noticeably missing, but you know what? That's really none of our business. I'm sure that those who we felt were missing from either the celebration, or the last game, said what they needed to say to Jeter on their own time, in their own way. None of those men, including ARod, need to explain their absence to us. It's their relationship with Jeter that matters, and our opinions on it really are moot.
Anyway, the spread from ESPN truly is gorgeous. I linked it twice! Take a moment to look over it. I promise you won't regret it.
