SEVERINO: BEST YANKEE PITCHING PROSPECT IN 10 YEARS

You all know the saying, when one door closes, another one opens? Well, Luis Severino is the Yankees new open door.

Admittedly, we have had our share of closing doors this season, with the latest door closing on CC Sabathia who is set for season ending surgery on his right knee. Sabathia’s injury could also close the door on his career, which would be devastating. But, as I said, there is an open door waiting and it’s for the 20-year-old, 6-foot right-handed pitcher, Luis Severino who is being fast tracked to the show. The prospect was just promoted to Double-A Trenton this week.

“Severino recently pitched in the Futures Game, tossing a scoreless inning. He drew rave reviews from many when he toyed with Texas Rangers power hitting prospect Joey Gallo, catching him looking with a slider after setting him up with two heaters and a change,” reported CBS New York on Friday. According to scouts, Dominican native Severino “throws in the mid-90s, with a nasty slider and vicious changeup.” I like the sound of that. And the Yankees do too, so much so that the young right-hander will be pitching in Trenton against the Double-A Mets club on Saturday. If all goes well, Severino will be at Spring Training in 2015.

“While it may be too early to call Severino the next Pedro Martinez, the Yankees are fast-tracking him as if he could be. Three longtime Yankees executives called him the organization’s best pitching prospect in a decade, (Joel) Sherman reported,” according to the NY Post. Severino’s ERA is hovering around 2.45 and averages about ten strikeouts per nine innings. Let’s not jinx it, because anything can happen, but this is very promising for the Yankees. And in the wake of pitching injuries this season, we need to stay upbeat and positive. The future is in the hands of guys like Severino. Now let’s keep him healthy and get back to business in the farm system of Yankeeland.
