NO LIMITS FOR DAVID PHELPS
Another day, another man down in Yankeeland. With Masahiro Tanaka out and the bull pen being taxed ever night for more and more innings, it is hard to stay positive. But I am not giving up on them just yet. The All Star Break is approaching, the season is hitting its midway point and there is still a lot of baseball ahead of us. And although there are naysayers out there that will disagree with me, we have some bright young pitchers stepping into some big shoes and doing a good job finding some room to positively impact the team. One of these pitchers is David Phelps.
Phelps made his 13th start this season with the Yankees. He closed out the series in Cleveland going in with a 4.03 ERA and a 3-4 record... and he was excellent! Phelps has a lot more innings in him this season as he grows as a formidable Yankee starter. According to ESPN last week, Brian Cashman commented on his Yankee pitching staff, “David Phelps has pitched well. Whitley has been a real surprise…We've had some guys do things we weren't expecting to ask them to do.” But the one thing Phelps needs to do is to pitch with more consistency.
And Phelps admits that he over thinks things a bit, which could be adding to his lack of consistent starts. “I was just trying to be too fine. I was trying to be a little too perfect," Phelps said. "I've got to trust my stuff and just throw the ball over the plate. I'm making the game a lot harder than it needs to be,” stated Phelps in an ESPN interview after the loss in Kansas City earlier last month when he blew his three run lead.
But as I said, there is a lot of baseball left and Phelps is getting a good opportunity to better learn about himself and build confidence in his pitching. We need him more now than ever, so I am staying positive when it comes to Phelps and Yankees. There is really no limit to the success he can have. He just has to stay focused on pitching and not overthinking the game.
