GETTING PUMPED & SUCCEEDING IN A WORLD OF DOUBT
What gets you excited to succeed? Is it training? Music? Believing? Criticism? There are many things that helps one push to the top and many stories out there. Sometimes in your busy world, you may hit a wall, an obstacle, and one day there may be a window of a new opportunity. At that point, you’re at a crossroads; do you enter that window into a world of unknown and push yourself, or do you walk away because you didn’t think you could hack it? It’s a big and important question and you’ve all been there at one point or another. I know I have...
Criticism helps or hurts an individual. That’s why confidence is so important in your life. You believe in yourself and there is nothing that gets in your way. Look at Suzie Pinstripe, one of our BYB writers who went down to Long Beach Island this past weekend and ran 18 miles in a marathon. Believe and you shall succeed. Success is Earned! Sure it was hard, probably hard as hell, but she went down there with no doubt in her mind and did it. At the end of the day, with confidence high, she’s achieved a goal.
Look at Ty Hensley whose career could have been in jeopardy if he and Yankee doctors didn’t catch his hip injury in time. These days, he’s back on the bump and pitching better than he did when the Yankees drafted him. That’s because he’s actually pitching correctly now and not overcompensating for a bum hip. He’s fixed, hopefully for good and confidence is high. He could have walked away... but he has a dream to achieve, and no doubt he'll achieve it!
Look at Jorge Posada, who has now achieved more than anyone in his career thought he could. I say that because Jorge was never supposed to be “good” according to his critics. But something happened... the doubters we forced to shut up because Jorge Posada ignored them. He idolized players like Thurman Munson and Yogi Berra and won big in his career. In the end, he was better than advertised. That’s a warrior. It translates to his family life too.
Laura and he have molded a great family with goals and values that I subscribe too. I love the way this family tackles their goals and with their achievements come success. Don’t believe me? Check out Indulge Magazine! True Leaders and a true success story. They believed, they pushed and they win every day.
I coach Little Leaguers and my son’s former coach and I break each other’s chops a lot because music is an enormous part of the workout for these kids. These kids come to win, but they’re still kids, the confidence isn’t always there.
The “right song” is super important, and so we battle over text, “Which songs do you have for your practice?” Between “The Fighter” by Gym Class Heroes and “My Time” by Fabulous, there are classics, like “Winner takes it all” by Sammy Hagar and “Kickstart my Heart” by Motley Crue. With every song there’s an energy and with that energy comes the ability… the “want” and the “need” to improve. You build your confidence through practice and the kids feel the music and try alittle harder, work alittle longer… they’re psyched.
The Boston Red Sox make me jealous because they have gelled in a way millions of Yankee fans miss. We remember the runs the Yankees had in the past. 1998, 1999, 2009, we were a team on a mission, confidence high and they never looked back. The Red Sox are there now, not us. Again… I’m jealous. Hey, hand it to a club that can play so well together… it’s a great balance and they have a great energy.
They picked a ridiculous gimmick to hang onto… the beards. Look, you know my take, I hate the beards, I think the tugging is ridiculous… read ENOUGH WITH THE BEARDS... IT'S OFFICIALLY UNCOMFORTABLE, but it works for them and somewhere in this playoff run, applause may be needed. No, not for the Red Sox, but for “Team”. When you believe, when you have confidence you pick each other up. The Sox are doing that. The Yankees are home.
What gets you excited to succeed? Training? Music? Confidence? Criticism? Find what works for you and push yourself. Believe. There’s nothing better than achieving a goal, but it never stops there. There are always more steps and always more goals…. Hey, it’s not only baseball, it’s life. You think Derek Jeter wanted it to end in 1996? Of course not and now he’s one of the greatest Captains the New York Yankees have ever had. He's baseball's ambassador. He leads by example and is now on top of the world, and will be back in 2014 by the way. Why? Because it’s not over and he doesn’t quit.
You shouldn’t either. Use today as a bar and raise it. Look at your work day or your school day today and climb the mountain. It’s in you… you just need to believe you can… write that down and go for it!
