BUILDING THE FUTURE & LETTING 2013 SLIP AWAY

I hate that "give up" mentality.  I was never raised that way.  It's clear to me that with no "big" trade by the deadline, Michael Young clearing waivers, read HERE, but no Yankee movement, and now the Yankees signing a 16 year old Dominican shortstop, there is no urgency to win in 2013... but instead, we will build our future.

According to Ben Badler of Baseball America, read HERE, The Yankees have signed Leonardo Molina, again, a 16 year old shortstop from the Dominican prospect league.  Badler writes from an August 1st article, "Molina, who became eligible to sign today on his 16th birthday, is 6-foot-2, 165 pounds with outstanding speed and is the best athlete in this year’s international signing class. He’s a righthanded hitter with good bat speed who played in the Dominican Prospect League and trained with Decarte Corporan. Molina is a cousin of Blue Jays 17-year-old shortstop Richard Urena, who ranked as the No. 13 international prospect last year, signed for $725,000 and is hitting .290/.379/.420 in the Dominican Summer League."

Look, there is no question that I believe that children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way (Funny right?), but the Yankees have all but given up on 2013.  I don't even mean the players as much as I mean the brass.  Sure, the team on the field right now just can't seem to get it together, but the talent is there... it's just hidden right now. I just want it to explode and go on a 14 game winning streak... something, ANYTHING to wake up the base.  But for now, we build.

For the record, and I just need to get this off my chest... I find it ironic that we have been told for years that our farm system is one of the best in baseball.

Yet, if we do need a veteran, like a Michael Young, or even a Giancarlo Stanton, we're told that we "just don't have the minor league system available" to give up to get those talents. Seriously Hal, with all due respect... what the hell is going on over there?

The Yankees and fans need a well deserved day off today. Enjoy it, forget about the losing streak and think about tomorrow... we're back in the Bronx.
