A DEREK JETER UPDATE: JULY 7, 2013

The Yankees got some good news today, in Derek Jeter's latest start for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. In four plate appearances Derek Jeter had a hit, a pair of walks, and a strikeout. The base hit was a sharp grounder through the left side, showing that Jeter's bat has that punch. Probably still getting used to seeing pitches, it looks like his eye is coming along well too as he worked those two walks. The one concern is obviously still his ankle. It's worth noting that he didn't really jump out of the box on that hit, starting slow and picking up speed on his run to first base. Jeter said the ankle felt fine, but it remains to be seen if he is still getting used to running, or if there's any discomfort in the ankle.

The Yankees played him at DH today, preferring to focus on the hitting and clearly not wanting to overwork his legs too early. But before the game Jeter took fielding practice, in addition to batting practice. It's clear that the Yankees are being very cautious with him, not giving him any grounders that really tested his range. He wasn't really tested in yesterday's game either, where he played the field and the one grounder he fielded was hit right at him (read here).

Still, if he has no discomfort in his ankle, the news cannot get any better.
