IF THE YANKS DON'T RE-SIGN CANO, IT'S THEIR OWN DAMN FAULT
Welcome to the Robinson Cano Show! Did you happen to catch Robinson Cano in the Italy Vs. Dominican Republic game yesterday? Have you seen him at all this entire World Baseball Classic? 12 for 19 with 2 home runs, 6 RBIs and some amazing defensive play as well. He's a natural. This dude is freaking on fire! His swing is effortless. He's a God right now and Yankee brass needs to wake up!
My take on this has changed slightly since my days of the Yankees playing hardball with this guy. Bottom line, he needs to be signed by the New York Yankees right now and it doesn't matter how, it has to happen, because it's that talent and ability that made us Yankee fans fall in love with him in the first place. I'll tell you something, it's that talent that will make us fall in love with him over and over again over what I believe can and should be a 7 year contract in the Bronx.
Sure, in the playoffs, Cano was absent. Call it a slump at the wrong time, or call him tired, but one thing you can definitely call it, was a fluke at this point. Robinson Cano is the real deal and it was no more clear than this spring where he is playing incredible baseball for the D.R. It makes me proud to call him a New York Yankee... he's representing. Trust me though, if the Yankees don't get this guy signed long term, it's their own fault.
Now, you know I am no Scott Boras fan, but I'll tell you this... Boras is drooling right now. He knows his client is raking and Cano's stock is super high. Does he HAVE to get Cano to sign with the Yankees? At this point no, but at least the Yanks will get the first shot and if Cano is actually running his own contract talks and wants to be a New York Yankee for life (and it's not about the money), he'd be smart to re-sign in New York and stay for his entire career, or at least as long as possible. It just makes sense.
Ultimately though... the Yankees need to step up. If the reason why the off season was so lame is because they are about to pay big dollars to Robinson Cano, then I forgive them. If they don't though... well, it's a disgrace... I guess we'll have to wait and see.
