WHY JOSE CAMPOS IS OFF TO A HOT START

For now, when everyone thinks about the blockbuster trade the Yankees and Seattle Mariners made in January, the first two names that pop up are Jesus Montero and Michael Pineda. A lot of fans are already worried that the Yankees have “lost” the trade because Pineda got off on the wrong foot, to say the least, and Montero has had a nice start with Seattle. But that’s not fair. There are other pieces in the trade, and though those other pieces aren’t the big names, they still have to be talked about.

The other pitcher the Yankees acquired in the blockbuster trade was 6’ 4” right hander Jose Campos. Campos is already off to a great start for the Low-A Charleston River Dogs through two starts, and he has got me very, very excited.

Campos was Charleston’s opening day starter, so it’s fair to say he’s the ace. That should be no surprise in itself though, as Campos is regarded as the fifth best prospect in the Yankees system and the second or third best pitching prospect in the organization, depending on who you ask. His first start came on April 6 against the Rome Braves (single-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves) in which he allowed just one hit in 6 innings pitched. He struck out three and walked just one on 65 pitches, 42 for strikes. Good for Jose to make a great first impression in his Yankee organizational debut. HERE'S the box score.

It’s tough to top that outing, right? Well, Campos, at the very least, came close to topping that performance last week, as he made his second start for Charleston against the Augusta Greenjackets (Single-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants) and he dominated. He pitched 5 no-hit innings while striking out eight and walking just two, resulting in his second win of the season. Campos also allowed an un-earned run in the first inning, but he retired 11 out of his final 13 batters he faced –seven via strikeout—to finish off his stellar outing. He threw 75 pitches in this one, 48 for strikes.
Check out the full box score HERE.

Campos’ next outing will likely come against Augusta again on April 16, so be sure to look for the recap, and be sure to look out for Jose Campos recaps all throughout his first season in the Yankees organization. Good luck, Jose!

Season line:
2 starts, 2-0, 11 IP, 0.00 ERA, 1 H, 11 K, 3 BB, 0 HR, 9/8 groundout/flyout
