WHY CARLOS PENA OVER PRINCE FIELDER MAKES SENSE

Well, except for the most obvious reason, that being Mark Teixeira is one of the best defensive first baseman in the American League, the timing to snatch up Prince Fielder off the free agent market is wrong, just plain wrong. Plus, you need to fit this into the equation, other teams with money and a real need for a bat and a first basemen will step up. Surprisingly though, they haven’t and I’m not sure why. We’ve already seen big guys get signed…Albert Pujols and CJ Wilson we huge gets for Los Angeles and you’d expect Prince to get signed big somewhere… but’s it’s been quiet.

The Yankees won't sign this guy. Sorry to say. Personally, I believe in my heart that Prince Fielder will go to the Cubs. Jon Heyman has tweeted that the Cubs are in. Read that HERE. Why do I believe that the Cubs will get Fielder? Not because of the reports as much as I believe that's it's obvious that Theo Epstein wants to make a splash in Chi-Town. Theo is great at his job and if he were to sign Prince Fielder big, that would prove to everyone in the NL that the Cubs can and will win a championship. It would also mean that Carlos Pena would probably not be back in Chicago... enter the New York Yankees. What’s to say we don’t try and snatch up a Pena to help out with our team. We had him once, briefly and we let him go, read HERE. I never liked that. Having Pena around would provide a bat and a backup at first base. Pena may want to play full-time and that’s the only downside to this scenerio, but it’s much more obvious to me that he be part of the Yankee ball club than a Prince Fielder who will get a big pay day and would be expecting to play full-time because of it. To the Yankees, Fielder doesn’t make sense, but Pena could make better sense. Don’t forget, they claimed Pena off waivers last season but he was pulled back, read HERE… It's almost like unfinished business and it could be a good pickup that no one is talking about. I guess the big question is, can it happen? We shall see.

Yeah, it’s true, the Yankees are clearly not in the mix with Fielder, although, let’s be honest, they weren’t “in the mix” for Mark Teixeira and Johnny Damon either and those signings were historic and momumental. So, why am I writing this post? I writing to tell you that Carlos Pena may be a nice pickup and a more useful player than Prince Fielder on our Yankees, and before you says “forget it”, I say… never say never.
