DON'T COUNT OUT JORDAN MONTGOMERY

The New York Post featured a piece on Saturday that preached what I have been saying since Spring Training: don't count out Jordan Montgomery!  The Yankee pitcher is optimistic about joining the starting rotation by August.

“I’ll start incorporating curveballs next Tuesday and Friday and I’ll add five more pitches. Strengthening is coming along, and I’m not getting over too eager letting it go yet,” he told the Post after Friday night's win over the Tampa Bay Rays, a victory that leaves the Yankees just shy of first place in the American League East, despite their 7-2 loss last night.

Recall that Montgomery is still recovering from Tommy John Surgery, which he had last June.  The trajectory back has been slow and steady, with strength being an integral part of the recovery process.  The 26-year-old left hander was a steady contributor before tearing his left ulnar collateral ligament, leaving him with the need for surgery.

"Montgomery went 9-7 with a 3.88 ERA in 29 starts as a rookie in 2017. He made just six starts in 2019, going 2-0 with a 3.62 ERA before going on the disabled list," reported NJ.com.

The Yankees only need three good starters for the post season.  Yes, I am saying post season because why not?  If the team is holding its own without Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton and their stud ace Luis Severino, then why not think about what's next?  If the ultimate goal is reaching it to the post season and getting to and winning the World Series in October, then the visualization and planning process needs to happen now.  If Montgomery can come back, stronger and make a difference with that nasty curve he is trying to build back, he could be one of the three we need to meet our goal and cross the finish line.
