JETER'S DONE LADIES & GENTLEMEN...

I hate to even think that Derek Jeter will soon never, ever be the starting shortstop for the New York Yankees.  But one day it's going to soon happen.

The most recent report is that Jeet will be placed back on the Disabled list again, this time for the remainder of the season and if... and this is a big IF, the Yankees make the playoffs, he will not be available for that either. In other words, the Yankees would end up going with Eduardo Nunez at shortstop in the post-season.

Wally Matthews of ESPN writes (HERE), "General manager Brian Cashman announced that the Yankees had placed their 39-year-old shortstop and captain on the disabled list, meaning his season "is effectively over," Cashman said....Cashman also ruled Jeter out for any post-season play in the event that the Yankees, who are two games back in the race for the second AL wild-card spot, wind up securing a playoff berth...."I think it's important that we don't put him in position to have further damage," Cashman said. "So today I met with Derek and told him this is what we've decided to do. Obviously it's not an easy situation."

The Yankees signed Brendan Ryan in a trade from the Seattle Mariners. He's a shortstop.  Essentially he and Nunez will work together to platoon the shortstop role, but Ryan is no eligible for the post season.

On Ryan... and I will poach Wally again, HERE, "... Ryan's true value is with his glove; his play at shortstop was recently featured in a Grantland.com story to demonstrate flaws in the 39-year-old Jeter's defense.  Ryan has also played second base, third base, left field and right field, but has played the vast majority of his games at shortstop. It is expected he would replace Eduardo Nunez, a shaky fielder who has been the Yankees regular shortstop in Jeter's absence. Nunez's throwing error led to four fourth-inning runs in Tuesday night's 7-5 win over the Orioles."

So there you have it... the captain is down and out for the rest of the season.  It's hard to believe... but it is in fact true. I'm speechless.
